Pale Saints- Lunapark, Los Angeles Ca 11/23/94 xfer from clone of DAT master Live

Here is another one from the DAT transfer project- it just happened to be on top of the pile of stuff to do, so this gets posted today. The early 90s were a good time to be in L.A.- so many small clubs having shows, and many of them not publicized. I was usually able to catch most of the ones I wanted to see. The one that KILLED me for missing (it was a secret show) was Pirner and Murphy from Soul Asylum playing an acoustic set.
Anyway, here is another pretty nice audience recording from Kevin Haynes’ collection of masters. This one is not on YT and appears to be uncirculated.

Small Factory- Jabberjaw, Los Angeles Ca 11/8/94 xfer from DAT Audience Master Clone Indie Rock

Wow, I checked YT and there is pretty close to no Small Factory uploaded. Not sure if anyone cares but here you go. A nice sounding audience tape from the infamous Jabberjaw club in one of the worst parts of L.A. This place and Hell’s Gate in Hollywood made my rear end pucker whenever I went.

The Go-Go’s: Rodney on the Roq, Los Angeles Ca. 10/2/94 Audio xfer from DAT Master

Back when I lived in L.A., I would sometimes check who was on some of the weekly KROQ shows. If it was someone interesting, I would fire up the DAT machine and record it. Looking back, I regret not recording every Rodney show + any loveline show with a musical guest. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20 and all…
For this show, The Go-Go’s had reunited in 2004 and were premiering their new single “the world has lost its head” for the upcoming(at the time) 2 disc retrospective “return to the valley of the go-go’s”. This is the entire show- interviews, call-ins, songs played and commercials! It is a time capsule of mid-90s KROQ.

Geraldine Fibbers- Neuz Pollution Live in Studio, KXLU-FM, Los Angeles 9/19/94 xfer f/DAT FM clone

Just about any time that I am able to choose Geraldine Fibbers for the On This Date in History, it’s gonna happen. This one is a DAT recording off the radio of only a part of their set. I think the taper missed the first part.
The mix on this was surprisingly light on bass and guitar, so I bumped them up a bit. I hope I didn’t overdo the bass. GREAT set. George Jones and Dolly Parton Covers!

Audio Live Performance

Holiday Flyer- Largo Pub, Los Angeles Ca 9/2/94 xfer f/DAT Audience Master Tape Soft Science Desario

Alright, here is today’s On This Date in History. I picked this one not because of the quality, but due to the rarity of the performance. The quality is decent but the PA didn’t seem to be real good- this was an EARLY Largo show, way before they became the hotspot for the famous. This seems to be the only Holiday Flyer show from the 90s that I can find online.

I was living in Whittier at the time and my good friends John and Katie were playing, so I headed out to see them. You can here me babble like a fool about my new glasses- I actually stumbled around life with 20/200 vision and I had just gotten my glasses that week.

The Muffs- KXLU live in studio, Los Angeles 9/17/93 xfer from unknown gen audio tape

I made a new facebook friend today- his name is Ronnie Barnett. You may know him from The Muffs. Looking forward to hearing more about the boom boom room, Kiss magnets and Phyliis Diller’s record collection Ronnie! I just happened to be transferring this tape as part of Todd Pritchard’s requests from Jason Ross’ collection, so today seems like a good day to post it.
This is awesome- Kim only drops the F-bomb once or twice on the air. The tape had a ton of reception static, so I ran 2 passes of denoise in Izotope rx7. There is still static, but it is WAY better than before.

Arlo Guthrie- Troubadours of Folk Fest, UCLA, Los Angeles Ca 6/5/93 xfer f/1st gen Audience VHS

Migraine has subsided. I am not a big prescription drug guy, but Imitrex is like magic.

I had something different planned for today’s collections post, but I apparently digitized 2 of Craig Hilmer’s cassettes and then deleted them from the PC before burning them to disc. Whoops! The kids have been home from school for 2+ weeks and my time is so limited in the studio that I tend to make mistakes like that.

This one was sitting in draft mode on my YT channel so let’s go with this.

When I lived in L.A., I went to this festival. I don’t know why- it wasn’t like I was a mega fan of any one artist on the bill. I liked some, but not sure why I was there. It was held by Rhino Records and Ben & Jerry’s and had a who’s who of folk acts. I brought my DAT and I have already posted a few sets to the archive.
I met this guy in the audience with a small/low tripod and a shirt & hat that said “video crew”. I went up and introduced myself, since his gear looked nothing like the official professional stuff that was being used closer to the stage. Sure enough, he just a guy who wore a shirt and hat with Video Crew and walked right in with his stuff- he wasn’t part of the camera crew at the event. Man, that takes balls of steel to pull that off.

I have a bunch of sets from this, but here is part of Arlo Guthrie’s main stage set. I also caught the songwriter’s workshop on the 2nd stage which was great.

Roger McGuinn and Tom Petty- Troubadours of Folk Fest, UCLA, Los Angeles 6/5/93 1st gen VHS tape

Here is the thing that took all day yesterday to digitize and process.

Anyway, this is only pt. 2 of the McGuinn performance, but I think this is all of the Petty footage. My pt1 VHS tape snapped and I need to repair it… Lots of great stuff on there, including the Kingsmen (spinal tap’s folk parody band). I did the entire pt2 VHS tape with a bunch of great stuff. I think it has Joni Mitchell’s performance (first in 20 years at the time)

10,000 Maniacs- Greek Theatre, Los Angeles Ca. 6/2/93 xfer from DAT Master Nakamichi CM300 Mic Live

I never considered posting this one because I thought that there was an FM broadcast of the same show. I just realized that they played 2 nights at the Greek- I taped night 1, the mobile truck got night 2. So here it is- decent quality, typical “good mic in an amphitheatre” sound.
