Son Volt- Loppen, Christiana, Copenhagen Denmark 11/18/98 SONY D5 Master & 2 ECM-150 MICS-DAT Clone

I realize that I have been posting a lot of Son Volt/Uncle Tupelo stuff lately, but there are an absolute ton of shows to be posted. There are 216 Son Volt entries on the tape list, over 100 Uncle Tupelo and a ton of Wilco through the Summerteeth era. So you are gonna get a lot of them since the collection has a lot..

This one was recorded with the gold standard of portable (but still huge) cassette decks- the Sony D5. The mics used are not too bad either. Recording is nice and clear- I didn’t do anything to this one, just kept it flat. The cassette master tape was bounced to DAT and my tape is a clone of that DAT.

Mercyful Fate- Roskilde Festival, Denmark 7/2/94 xfer from DAT clone Complete show

Finally, today’s on this date in history. I noticed this wasn’t online- only a shaky video with poor muffled audio. The taper brought a Sony ECM144 mic to tape- that mic doesn’t give you a whole lot of low end and you get some noise from the mic hitting a jacket zipper or something. Still not a bad recording and a full Roskilde set. I found it funny that MF played a 75 minute headlining set, then the announcer says “Blue Aeroplanes at 1pm tomorrow”. I guess that’s what happens when you play close to home- you headline and play 75min! I am sure it was a smaller stage, but still. Cool.

Uncle Tupelo- Roskilde Festival, Denmark 7/3/93 Complete Show Soundboard xfer from band archive

I am posting these in the same order as I digitized them back in 1994. This one is the full Roskilde 93 set through the soundboard. There is also a shorter FM radio broadcast.

Teenage Fanclub- La Cigale, Paris France 11/4/93 2nd gen cassette-DAT FM Broadcast john lennon cover

I had originally planned to post the Thin White Rope part of the FM broadcast for today’s On This Date in History, but it sounded so bad that I didn’t want to subject anyone to it. There is a nice audience recording of the entire TWR set that I need to digitize one day.
This was on the tape after the TWR and sounds a bit better. I can’t tell if the last song (ballad of John and Yoko) is TFC perrforming the cover- it sure sounds similar, but setlist dot fm doesn’t show them playing it. In fact, out of the 85 sets documented over there, they don’t have record of anyone playing it.
So, if you understand dutch, please let me know what this guy is saying so I can clarify.

EDIT: Dutch guy tells us that this is from La Cigale, Paris France 11/4/93

PS: I should post wrong stuff more often. That Bazooka Joe post has gotten more comments than just about anything recently!

Thin White Rope- Rytmeposten, Odense Denmark 9/6/91 xfer from DAT Clone Audio

I think I mentioned before that I have 90 audiotapes of Thin White Rope that need to get digitized over time. Other than some of my master tapes, I haven’t had a chance to do very many. I pulled this one out because it was listed as a soundboard on my list, but after a closer listen it is an audience recording… but it sounds really good. TWR would play so loud that many audience tapes are not too great.

Fairport Convention- Alexander Teatret, Copenhagen Denmark 4/4/86 Sony D5 2x Sony ECM150 Master xfer

Today’s on this day in history goes out to Ken Dixon, who had a recent health scare. When I posted the Arlo Guthrie tape last weekend, he responded (from the hospital) with “Folk You!”. Glad to know he was feeling better, haha.

So, Folk You all again. I get all geeky excited with tapes like this- this was probably recorded by a deadhead, as they were the ones who had the best gear. The Sony TCD-D5 was THE best cassette deck for taping. It was huge but perfect for producing high quality live recordings. The cassette master tape was bounced to DAT and I have a 1st clone of that. Sounds great!

The venue is confusing. The tape was labeled ALEXANDRA CULTURE CLUB, COPENHAGEN DENMARK. When I look that up online, I am told it is a hotel. I did some further digging and I think it is this place. Maybe, maybe not.

Man, I have not seen Fairport since 1998. I really need to get to Cropredy before they hang it up.
