This was probably my 2nd best Monks show. The lighting at Cattle was really good tonight, I can’t remember if that was by my request or not. 🙂 Anyway, Victor Krummenacher might want to check this out since he was about 2 feet from me. Enjoy.
There were some nights at Cattle, where I would be filming from the stage and my audio tape deck would be back with Eric Bianchi, lined into the mixing board. Here is one of those that turned out pretty damned good, especially now that we can brighten up the video and rebalance the board tapes. Not perfect, but enjoyable.

We still have a few more videos from Rodney Parker’s collection that have not posted yet. Here is one of them, playing their High School! How cool is that? Scherzo released an LP and a 7″ on Lookout Records in 1991, and that was about it. Jon Bower (Guitar/vocals) has been active since the 90s, releasing stuff from a bunch of bands.
Rodney is out having fun in Europe, so hopefully he sees this eventually.

Here’s a late “on this date in history” post for you today. I was trying to figure out where I got this tape from- I thought it might be from the guy who came to my place in 1991 to get some tapes for their Camper van Beethoven book, and a search in newspapers dot com confirms it. Uncle Tupelo opened for the David Lowery band for this show. DLB was Cracker before they had a name. This comes from a copy off his tape, which was copied from the master. Great early set.

The Dharma Bums never really got much traction outside of Seattle, but they were predicted to be the Next Big Thing in the late 80s/early 90s. Kurt & Courtney met at a Dharma Bums show in the northwest in the 80s.
I went to over 50 Cattle Club shows, and this one is probably my favorite, if not one of the top 2 or 3 (Yo La Tengo/Barbara Manning 1992 and Buffalo Tom/Sebadoh/Pavement being the others). Dear 23 had just come out and I had it for about a month and was a big fan already. I had no idea what to expect live, but I thought that it would be jangly and low key. It was probably the loudest show I ever saw at Cattle. When I was taping, I could not hear any vocals, but luckily the mic picked them up. You get TWO big star covers- Feel and I am the Cosmos, years before Auer and Stringfellow would join big star. Holy shit. IT took days for my hearing to recover.
Wow. Now that I am getting used to using these new enhancement tools, these videos are coming out really nice. Here is the posies from Cattle. I bumped up the contrast and de-snowed the picture with neat. It looks much clearer than before.

It’s a BONUS post for you on this fine Monday. This was last week’s Patreon voter’s choice. I really thought that the Old 97s video was going to win it, but Ride came out on top. This week, we are voting for an uncirculated Cattle Club show. Yep, there are still more recordings from Cattle to post. Sign up to Patreon- link below. It’s fun, it’s tax deductibe, and it’s the time of year to scramble for deductions!
This one wasn’t as bad as I remembered. I recalled it being super dark and the audio being distorted beyond listenability. It’s actually pretty well lit- only the drummer is dark. The audio only distorts badly when the vocals are peaked. So, not terrible.

For today’s On This Date in History, I figured I would post something early to give the Soul Asylum fans something to do while waiting in RSD lines for that After the Flood vinyl. Unfortunately, I can’t make it out today due to Little League scheduling conflicts. If record stores would open at 8am, I would be all set. Stupid rock & roll time anyway. This one has been online before, on Mike Wilson’s excellent “littletooclean” youtube channel. If you are a SA fan, check out that channel- a treasure trove of stuff. The reason I decided to post it again is due to the quality of this one. I got this directly from the filmer (Steve Hanson- R.I.P.) so along with the lossless VHS transfer setup and denoising, it looks as good as it can. Audio is surprisingly distorted for an acoustic show.
