This was probably my 2nd best Monks show. The lighting at Cattle was really good tonight, I can’t remember if that was by my request or not. 🙂 Anyway, Victor Krummenacher might want to check this out since he was about 2 feet from me. Enjoy.
There were some nights at Cattle, where I would be filming from the stage and my audio tape deck would be back with Eric Bianchi, lined into the mixing board. Here is one of those that turned out pretty damned good, especially now that we can brighten up the video and rebalance the board tapes. Not perfect, but enjoyable.

The Dharma Bums never really got much traction outside of Seattle, but they were predicted to be the Next Big Thing in the late 80s/early 90s. Kurt & Courtney met at a Dharma Bums show in the northwest in the 80s.
I went to over 50 Cattle Club shows, and this one is probably my favorite, if not one of the top 2 or 3 (Yo La Tengo/Barbara Manning 1992 and Buffalo Tom/Sebadoh/Pavement being the others). Dear 23 had just come out and I had it for about a month and was a big fan already. I had no idea what to expect live, but I thought that it would be jangly and low key. It was probably the loudest show I ever saw at Cattle. When I was taping, I could not hear any vocals, but luckily the mic picked them up. You get TWO big star covers- Feel and I am the Cosmos, years before Auer and Stringfellow would join big star. Holy shit. IT took days for my hearing to recover.
Wow. Now that I am getting used to using these new enhancement tools, these videos are coming out really nice. Here is the posies from Cattle. I bumped up the contrast and de-snowed the picture with neat. It looks much clearer than before.

Hi Everyone, here’s the FMK set from Sacto Active Rock. Members: Leo Boots- Vocals and Guitar. Mike Farrell- Lead Guitar. Vince Garcia- Bass. Michael Curry- Drums. I will be posting over 30 of these shows, so please subscribe to my youtube channel if you want updates. Thanks
This show is a bit of a mystery- either Jason Ellis or I taped it (audio only, they would not allow video), but we can’t rember who taped it and with what equipment. He had a Sony WMd6C at the time w/ECM909 microphone. I had a Marantz PMD430 and Nakamichi CM300 Microphone. Ride sounds like a PMD430 recording (sounds nice with some high end phasing) while the lush sounds like a D6 recording (Lush were always so midrangey that the Sony/909 tapes sounded less than stellar). Anyway, I hope you enjoy the show- this is for Chris Macias and Dennis Yudt.
Here’s another gem from the uncle tupelo band archive. When I first got these, I had to get them transferred immediately and sent back to Tony. As a result, I never gave some of these shows a proper listen. This is one of them- damn, this one sounds good and is a great performance!
This tape was unlabeled but to Michael Pemberton’s sleuth work & a quick factorybelt dot net search, I figured out what it was.

So here is something- I taped this show 30 years ago yesterday, and I don’t recall ever trading it out to anyone. When I pulled it from the cassette case, it was rewound and looked untouched. This one is probably uncirculated. We tried to get permission to video that night, but it was a no-go from the bands so I snuck the PMD430 (which is HUGE) into the video bag and popped the Nakamichi mic (which is HUGE) out of the corner of the bag, pointing right at the PA. It turned out pretty nice! I am just learning that Lush was at Cattle the night before and hung out with people and got drunk… and ran up a big bar tab. They even mention it during this recording. So awesome. Brian, just curious- did you guys comp them the drinks, or did it come out of their paycheck the next night? 🙂 This one is for Karen Simmons, who had a good friend (Chris) in the band.

Here’s another nugget of joy from Barry Mills Prickett’s collection. The board mix on this one was way unbalanced- it was almost all vocals at the start, and the raw board mix boosts the guitars slightly at the 7:00 mark. I did everything I could to get some more guitar and bass in the mix using Izotope rx7. The date is a bit of a guess. They mention that it is Paul Stanley Niklewcz’ birthday which (if FB is right) is on 4/5. I googled around and 4/5/91 was on a friday night. If Skid or Paul have any more detail or a correction, I would be happy to hear it.
