Grumpster- Ace of Spades, Sacramento Ca 3/27/22 4K UHD with Schoeps Audio partial set

I forgot that I pulled out the Lumix ZS200 and got some of Grumpster’s set. The camera has a 15min limit, so I just filmed 1 segment until I ran out of time, then went to buy merch.

Jawbreaker- Ace of Spades, Sacramento 3/27/22 Pt. 1 4K UHD Lumix GH5S w/Schoeps Audio

Jawbreaker came to Sac last month and thanks to the generosity of TM Shawn, I was able to get a “photo” pass. I brought the DSLR (my best camera) and shot the show in 4K. Unfortunately, 2 things went wrong. First, I used a way too powerful lens so I could not pan back and get a full band shot. The show was packed, so breaking down and reattaching a different lens was kinda out of the question. Second, I got really fatigued holding the camera still, so it is very shaky at times. Sorry.
Big thanks to Anonymous for the Schoeps audio. I used the stock mic for audio on the GH5S and it is just massive distortion. I was shocked that Pluraleyes would synch 2 of the 3 parts with the source audio sounding so awful. It turned out alright.
This is in 2 parts- the main set is here, and the last few minutes are on part 2, posting in a couple minutes here.

Exodus- 3rd & Castro, Oakland Ca. 3/6/22 Complete 4K UHD w/ Schoeps Audio Canon HF G60

Finally, here is the complete Exodus set. I made a mistake with my microphone for the first 40min of the set, so thanks to Ted Mattes, he hooked me up with a Schoeps audio recording and it sounds much better now.
Such a great show and a fun time- like Zetro said, there were so many bands represented that built the bay area thrash scene. I must commend all of us 50-somethings that kept the pit going for the entire show. I saw a couple people take a headfirst dive right over by me, hope everyone got home safely and avoided the hospital. Damn, what a party.

Exhumed- 3rd & Castro, Oakland Ca. 3/6/22 4K UHD Complete Set Rode Videomic Pro Death Gore Metal

Exhumed played in the middle slot last Sunday. I wasn’t familiar with their material, but they were definitely the most evil band of the day. Apologies for pulling my camera away when they started spraying the blood- it looked like it was coming right for us!

The Boneless Ones- 3rd & Castro, Oakland Ca. 3/6/22 4K UHD complete show w/ Rode Videomic Pro Stereo

Man, this one took forever to render to 4k on YT. We might see Exhumed and the complete Exodus set next month at this rate.
Anyway, Boneless Ones were the first band up. I thought I had given myself plenty of time (over 2 hours!) to drive from Sacramento, find parking and get ready to film. Nope. I got in at 1:55pm for a 2pm set time. Also, the sun was a huge pain in the ass for their set- the shadows darkened the front of their body, so I had to crank up my exposure to compensate.
It was a good set- this version of the boneless ones is different than the ones I have heard on compilation records- very metal thanks to Craig Locicero (Forbidden, Dress the Dead) and Chris Kontos (a million bands, but probably best known for Attitude Adjustment and Machine Head).

Exodus- 3rd & Castro, Oakland Ca. 3/6/22 4K UHD Live Encores w/Rick Hunolt

Here is the last 20 minutes of the Exodus show yesterday. Why only the last 20min? Well, I wanted to get something up ASAP and the entire show is over 100GB and would have taken days to process. I also screwed up an audio setting for the first 30min of the show so it doesn’t sound as good as this does.
Sorry about the angle- I know that Tom is obstructed by a sidefill- there was no good place to film from(this was a blocked off street- all flat). I needed to be close to the PA for the Rode to sound decent AND avoid being crushed by the pit, so I found the one street sign and posted up against it. It helped in 2 ways- it allowed me to stabilize the camera (I had my monopod in my pocket and camera way the hell up there) and the sign helped shield me a little from flying bodies coming out of the pit. I still get blasted a couple of times, but I didn’t get knocked down. Sorry to all the folks who went full-bore into the street sign. I bet they are hurting today.
It is so cool to see the band having so much fun up there.

Lightweight- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento 3/5/22 4K UHD Complete

Man, I spent all week posting videos from last weekend. Here is the final one- from Jake’s 30th birthday show at the cafe. THat’s him in the thumbnail- he lays drums for lightweight. He threw a FREE show for his birthday which was a lot of fun. The Cafe had just reopened after being closed for a couple months due to pipe issues within the complex. Between this show being full and a big grind show at the colony, I don’t think I had ever seen the bar so busy before. Anna was flying at superhuman speed all night!

Sad Girlz Club- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca 3/5/22 4K UHD Complete Show

Here’s a much-anticipated set from Jake’s birthday show on Saturday. Sad Girlz Club were born in Sacramento, but they moved to southern California a couple of years ago. It sounded like they have not played a whole lot of shows since moving due to the pandemic, so having them come up here for this one show was a rare treat.
The set included old favorites from their Hard Feelings release, along with at least 1 new song that was released on a 7″ by Lavasocks records last week!

Bird Control- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca. 3/5/22 4K UHD Punk

NOTE- 1st 30 seconds is SILENT- I forgot to turn on my mic.
Bird Control were the second band up at Jake’s birthday show. Man, this was a fun night. I had never heard this bend before- interesting mix of a shoegaze sounding guitarist and a punk band. The lead vocalist is very active. Their songs sound bouncy to me. What the hell does that mean? Listen for yourself.
PS: The new soundproofing make the room sound so much better- thanks Chris!

Defender Grade- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca. 3/5/22 4K UHD Rode Videomic Pro Stereo Pop Punk

When I got to the cafe last night for the show, the opening band, Defender Grade, was already playing. They sounded really good so I headed in and started filming asap. I still had my camera on manual focus and sports mode from filming my daughter’s soccer game, so it takes me a song or so to fix focus. Good band, I will definitely leave the house to see them again. Love those melodic bass lines!
