Clean Girl and the Dirty Dishes- Mitchell Park Community Center, Palo Alto Ca. 11/20/21 4K UHD Rode

A few months back, I headed over to Palo Alto to see Barbara Manning play One Perfect Green Blanket in its entirety. I filmed her set with 5 cameras and I have been planning on editing all of the 4k angles together but I have not been able to get my workstation completely ready for editing- I always get busy with something else. It has resulted in a complete overhaul of the studio and I am just about ready to install the 4k monitor.
Anyway, here is the opening set from that show. I happened to put up a G50 on a tripod and hit “record” and caught some of the opening band’s set. Enjoy!

S.F. Seals- Mitchell Park Community Center, Palo Alto Ca. 11/20/21 4K UHD Multicamera w/Schoeps Aud

Before I get into the story of this show, I wanted to make sure everyone is aware that Barbara Manning is playing with 28th Day tomorrow night (6/18) at Light Rail Studios in San Francisco! See comments for ticket link if you are interested.
I could not believe my eyes when this show was announced- Barbara playing with the SF Seals for the first time in a LONG time (20 years? 25?), and it was announced that she was playing the entire “One Perfect Green Blanket” album. Even though this landed on my daughter’s birthday AND we had an early morning flight on the 21st, I moved mountains to make this show. Don’t worry, my daughter had a wonderful birthday on the 19th.
While I was at the show, I saw someone there with a Magnolia Mountain shirt on. That was surprising, as they are not from California and not very well known. I approach the (masked) man with the shirt and tell him “you know, I am on this online forum called Postcard and the guy from that band is on there”… then I realize it’s Mike Mayer (Berkeley Mike) who is also on Postcard! Thankfully, Mike was audio taping and his audio came out best, so it is used here.
Anyway, a great show and I am so happy to see SF Seals again- I had not seen them since 1992!

Ben Harper- The Edge, Palo Alto Ca 8/19/96 xfer f/master audio cassette

I was working my way down the collections spreadsheet and didn’t notice a couple of people way up top who haven’t had stuff posted in about a month. Whoops! We are now on a ~2 week cadence, which is pretty good I think.

Arica Pelino recorded this one and while it isn’t a pro recording, it was good enough to just post it as-is. No EQ/rebalance. I did edit out her chatting with friends at the start- her and Wayne Vanderkuil have the same taping approach apparently.

Pennywise- The Edge, Palo Alto 7/10/95 xfer from MiniDV Master Punk D.F.L. Joykiller Tour

Since I am going to be seeing my old friend Guerin Myall at Punk in the Park tomorrow, I figured that I would post one of his master tapes that had a tie to tomorrow’s show.

I find one of his many Pennywise tapes- this one is labeled “Pennywise 1994” and nothing else. That sets off a search through the between-song banter to try to figure out where it is from. They thank DFL at one point, and at another they mention it is a Monday night… ok… then toward the end of the show, they FINALLY say the location- Palo Alto. That sets off ANOTHER search to find when they played with DFL on a Monday in Palo Alto in 1994… nothing.

Thanks to newspapers dot com (thanks Dan), I finally figured it out. This is from the DFL/Joykiller/Pennywise tour in 1995. They played the edge on 7/10/95 which was a Monday.

There are over 100 tapes labeled like this. I don’t know if I have enough time and patience to figure all these out. haha.

OH. If you have read this far, here is a special bonus- I have 2 tickets and artist parking for tomorrow’s PITP show (thanks Shawn). Please ping me if you are interested in going with me. I can’t really drink since I am gluten sensitive.

Donner Party- KZSU live in studio, Stanford University, Ca 2/15/89 xfer from low gen tape Quasi

On this day in history- February 15.
I “discovered” Donner Party in April of 1989- they headlined a show at UC Davis Coffeehouse and I had gone to see opener Jonathan Segel. They blew me away when they started playing. Have you ever heard a band play and you just knew that they would be one of your favorites forever? That has happened a few times for me and that was one of them.

As I was gearing up to bug the hell out of the band and follow them around, taping every show, I learned that they broke up. They all fell off my radar until I got on the internet in 1997 and learned that Sam Coomes moved to the pacific northwest and started a new band called Quasi… and now I bug the hell out of them, taping every show in the area! Haha.

But seriously, give this band a listen. The best band you’ve never heard.

MDC- New Varsity Theatre, Palo Alto Ca 5/24/86 xfer from master tape M.D.C. Millions of Dead Cops

Another day, another MDC post. It seems like I have been posting at least 1 MDC thing each week for months now. Here is a long set, possibly the longest set I have seen, from the Smoke Signals era. Sounds decent for a 1980’s punk recording.

I think I EQ’d this one in Sony Sound Forge 10 to bump up the bass

Dead Kennedys- Keystone, Palo Alto Ca 2/17/86 xfer from master audio cassette

It’s Mediocre Monday again! Keeping with the theme of “incredibly rare stuff that may not sound perfect”, here is an apparently uncirculated Dead Kennedys tape from their end times. The last show (w/Jello) was at Freeborn Hall on 2/21/86. Concert archives shows their show at The Stone in SF on 2/16 being the 2nd to last… so this 2/17 show may actually be the 2nd to last show. Wow!
If you are wondering about the picture I chose for this show, this is apparently the former location of Keystone Palo Alto… which later became The Edge in the alternative heyday of the 90s.
It appears to cut off before the end- if I find a part 2 of this set, I will repost the whole thing.
Fun fact- the non-Jello version of the DKs have apparently played about 75% of all shows billed as “Dead Kennedys” according to concert archives. I guess that proves that quantity doesn’t trump quality. Haha, sorry.

7 Seconds- Keystone, Palo Alto Ca 2/17/86 xfer from master cassette tape hardcore

I’m late today- too much happening at work. No week would be complete without a tape from Wayne Vanderkuil’s collection. Here is 7 Seconds opening for Dead Kennedys at Keystone Palo Alto. Wayne also found this sweet photo of a Keystone match box, back when clubs and bars did that kind of thing.
I EQ’d this one and was able to pull bass out and boost it up. The guitar is mixed in with all that midrange, so no such luck there. Sounds pretty good for the equipment, venue and era.

Beowulf- New Varsity, Palo Alto Ca 10/11/85 xfer f/master audio cassette Crossover Welcome to Venice

Slowly starting to get back on top of things around here. This is from Wayne Vanderkuil’s amazing collection of tapes. He taped so many shows in the mid to late 80s it is kinda mind boggling. A good amount of his tapes have him and friends (John Scharpen, Andy Andersen, and tons more) goofing off before the bands starts… on tape! I edit most of them out because I am pretty sure that Wayne and friends would be mortified to have them posted, but this one is benign enough to post. lol.

One of the nice things about posting collections at a faster rate is the ability to share more- there is so much to work through. Wayne has hundreds of tapes, and I have shared maye 20 so far.

This one is from one of Suicidal’s early runs up to Northern Cal, and they brought their Welcome to Venice mates Beowulf and No Mercy.
