The Muffs- TT the Bears Place, Boston Ma 6/1/95 xfer from unknown gen audio cassette

Collections post time- this one from Scott Hamilton, who sent over a small box of (mainly) Muffs stuff. Thanks Scott!

Kim passed away today, 6 years ago today. I remember the shock of seeing the post and not being able to concentrate on work. I still can’t bring myself to listen to that last album. I need to do it soon.

The quality on this one was pretty poor. It was all high end, but not much distortion so I was able to fix it up and make it listenable through Soundforge EQ and Izotope rebal. Thank goodness for software!

The tape was labeled as Middle East Cafe 5/25/95, but I have a hard time believing that they would play 2 shows right next to each other, a week apart.

Cub- Boston Ma Spring 1995 xfer from unknown gen soundboard cassette Lookout Mint Records Indie Marr

Audio collections post from Scott Hamilton’s collection. The mix on this one was pretty uneven and the tape had a little hiss, so I worked it up in Izotope Rx8. Rebalance was something in the +5-+8 range for bass and guitar. The first track sounds pretty terrible and then the mix settles down and stays somewhat consistent throughout.

The tape had a specific date (3/22/95) but they were in Milwaukee that night.

Uncle Tupelo- Paradise Theater, Boston Ma. 2/29/92 xfer from band archive audiotape Neil Young SBD

Here’s another board tape from uncle tupelo’s band archive, and it is a doozy. This is from the run with Teenage Fanclub, at the Paradise in Boston. This one is unique because they close the set with the Gang of Four cover PLUS a Neil Young cover.
Not only that, but I tried to find a flyer for this show online and found this article about the show… written by Craig Finn. Could it be THE craig finn/ Sure seems like it, he was at Boston College at the time.

Dinosaur Jr- Citi Club, Boston Ma 5/18/91 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette J Mascis Complete Show

I’m getting a late start after back-to-back 7 seconds shows. Man, doing those multicamera videos gets more tiring the older I get. Also, today’s collections post will be late. I just finished digitizing it and I still need to process and upload. So tonight on that.

Today’s On This Date in History post is one that I got from the taper. It sounds nice, likely another Pro Walkman tape. For the image, I had the choice of this article or a scathing post-concert review, so I chose this. Man, what was up with reviewers in the 90s. I rarely saw a show I could not stand. The only ones that were not enjoyable to me off the top of my head were the Palace Hollywood shows because the acoustics were garbage and security was overbearing.

The Lemonheads- WERS Metrowave Live in Studio Boston Ma 5/28/89 xfer f/2nd gen audio tape Evan Dando

How’s everyone doing today? I am anxious and Angry, and I am not talking about the clothing company… even though I think they are awesome. I hope that these posts provide a nice distraction from reality.

Thanks to Alan Bruce for telling me what to do! Alan is the guy who asked for that Muffs video last month and the MTX that Frank noticed and pointed out an unreleased song within. So, Alan is batting 1.000 is what I am trying to say. This is another kickass selection.

The Lemonheads- Axis, Boston Ma 2/9/89 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette Evan Dando Complete Show

Let’s hit up Anonymous’ collection for today’s post. He traded with a person in Boston who taped this show. This is announced as a reunion show of the band, but I thought they were pretty active back then. There is a woman on vocals on one of the songs- not sure if that is Juliana at this point. I do know that original vocalist Ben Deily was still in the band and you can hear him on vocals for some of the songs here. Interesting show.

Henry Rollins and Ian Mackeye- The Rat, Boston Ma. 2/4/87 Spoken word together xfer from 3rd gen

NOTE the first 20min of this is rough- lots of audience chatter. It gets a lot better after 20min. Fast fwd if you can’t stand it- it’s worth the listen!

I think this was a one of a kind event- Henry Rollins and Ian Mackeye on stage together, reminiscing about the fun times working at the pet shop in D.C. and talking about ill-fated tours. Henry was doing spoken word shows regularly at this point, but I have never seen Ian do one of these since.
I also have a different recording of this show (recorded by Jim Hildreth) that is longer- 90 minutes- but lesser quality. Let me know if you are dying to hear that one and I’ll pull it out.

Kilslug- The Rat, Boston Ma. 1/8/87 xfer from 1st gen tape Rathskeller Upside Down Cross Adolf Satan

Hi Everyone, it’s Kilslug Friday! Here is yet another Kilslug show from the infamous Rat in Boston. These shows sound like drunken parties, wish I was there.
In the early 90s, I found a cassette trader with a bunch of Kilslug master audio recordings so I snagged them all. It looks like only 1 or 2 are on YT so far, so you all get to be abused with Kilsug the rest of the week.
Listen to the “Answer the Call” album for the properly recorded versions of these songs.
