I pulled another video filmed by Steve Hanson(R.I.P.) for today’s On This Day in History. Arcwelder were a band from Minneapolis who were very active in the 90s- 6 albums and 4 singles released from 1990-1999. The released 4 albums on touch and go and then broke up. My favorite by them is Xerxes. While looking up their info on discogs, I discovered that the band reformed and put out an album last year! Nice surprise.

I just finished digitizing and rebalancing today’s on this date in history. I had the venue one marked as First Avenue, Minneapolis which made no sense. There were very few boards coming out of that venue and a 1st gen? How? Who did I get it from? Thanks to Dan Johnson and newspapers dot com, it was actually the venue of the same name in Fargo. Now it made sense- it’s a Steve Hanson (RIP) tape! There was no bass in the mix so I bumped it up in Izotope. Also pushed the guitar a little as well.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the next big thing.

I pulled this for today’s On This Date in History for 2 reasons- for one, I got it from the taper Steve Hanson (who I think passed away) and I don’t think a lot of his tapes made it out in circulation.. and two, as a memorial to the Steve in the band. I rated this tape really badly on my list- VG- usually means “unlistenable garbage”, but it only needed a good EQ to get the harsh high end out of there. The beginning of the tape is a little odd- low levels and not as crisp. It gets better later on.

Holy crap, this thing kicks ass. I uploaded this about a month ago and never got around to posting. What a performance. I think I rebalanced this one in Izotope rx7. I can’t remember.

I was turned on to Soul Asylum by an old tape trading friend (Katie Dee, Buffalo NY!) in 1988 and have been a huge fan ever since… especially of the 1986-1990 era. They were untouchable then. I just checked the tape list and I have ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY SEVEN live tapes of the band. So, why don’t I post them more often? Well, there are some big fans out there who have done a great job of getting their concerts online, and they have a very good facebook group to discuss the band. When I post there, people are like “who the heck is THIS guy” lol. Many of the shows I have are already online, shoutout to the “littletooclean” channel. Anyway, I am pretty sure I got this from the guy who taped it. That guy might be Mark Janovec, but I don’t recall him having the type of mics that produce this (low end heavy) type of recording. This was part of a “choice rocks” benefit, which might be a rock for choice thing? There is nothing online about it at all. I just happened to get lucky and find an image of the concert shirt.

This one seems to be a local radio station’s live broadcast of a show at first ave. That’s odd, I don’t recall this being a regular thing with this station and I traded with enough folks from Minneapolis to know.. I like how it appears like they gave the show an hour time slot. Once that hour is up, Rollins gets the hook- on air at least. Looking back, Rollins Band just smoked. I wished I had seen more shows with them back then.

Another one from my collection for today’s On This Date in History. I got this one back in the DAT trading days and it remains one of the better audience recordings I have heard. Wow! I don’t recall a prominent taper in the area with Schoeps mics… Mark Janovec used a sony mic (I think) and I don’t think J. Free had schoeps. Whoever it was did one hell of a job. Surprised this isn’t on YT yet.
