Joe Cocker- Live on German TV 2004 Various Appearances lossless xfer from A&M VHS Master Enhanced

It’s a late one tonight, from Todd Nakamine’s collection. This one has a few german TV appearances. I think all are from 1994. Right from A&M’s archive.

Barbara Manning and the Go Luckys- Merlin, Stuttgart Germany 1/3/03 Soundboard 2 hour set

Today’s on this date is one of those ?-CDR things that became prevalent in the era of CDR trading. It sure sounds like a digital source- no noise at all. The mix is decent as well. Snare is a bit low, but otherwise good enough.

I absolutely love when she does the Butterfly cover. “Butterfly (aka So Much Wine)” by Irish folk singer Christy Moore, originally by The Handsome Family (Brett & Rennie Sparks) and she just slays it, and she opens with it here.

Slobberbone- Beverungen, Germany 6/11/00 DAT to CDR to you. R.I.P. Jan De Bever

Before the internet and youtube changed everything, people who taped shows would network together and mail tapes and CDRs of live concerts to each other. In the mid 90s, I was trading with about 50 people. It was crazy. I went from 1200 cassettes in 1988, to 4,000 cassettes in 1995 and then moved to DAT, CDR and DVD trading.
When you would send something off, you would typically write a letter with tape details, tape requests in return, and any personal stuff that’s happening. You would become friends with people that you traded with over time. I can’t remember how I started trading with Jan- it was in the late 90s or early 2000 and we bonded over love of the alt country band Slobberbone. He was based in Holland, and he (along with his friend Michiel) would follow the band around to multiple countries to tape the band. He taped at least 9 Slobberbone shows in June of 2000 alone!
We just learned that Jan de Bever passed last summer. Thanks to Jan the Lazyman for letting me know. Pretty bummed out about this.

Barbara Manning and the Go Luckys- 2ndHand Stuttgart Germany 1/15/00 ltd ed CD rip Bruce Springsteen

I had something different planned for today’s OTD post, but I could not get the snare to surface in izotope like I thought I could, so you get this instead. It’s nice consolation.
Having booked Barbara’s US tour in 2001, the Steinbach twins (the Go Luckys part of the band) would always randomly send me nice things in the mail. This is one of them. I don’t know if they ever sold these as a limited edition CDR or just gave them to friends.. it’s not on discogs, so it hasn’t been sold recently.
This is a full band set in a record store. I don’t ever recall them doing Dancing in the Dark other than this show.

Barbara Manning- Jugendkulturzentrum Waschtag, Aschaffenburg Germany 11/8/97 xfer from DAT Clone

Holy crap, that is one long venue name. Just FYI, I decided to unlist all of my Youtube videos until the copyright bot heat is off me. You can still access videos from http://www.sacramentomusicarchive.com. I got this in trade- I think the taper is Andreas Claus. Barbara was in Germany A LOT in the late 90s, since her bandmates were there. I never knew there were so many places to play in germany until I saw some of those tour itineraries.

Geraldine Fibbers- TV Munich, Germany 11/6/97 xfer from record company promo VHS master tape

Wow. I snagged this off of Ebay quite a while back and finally got around to digitizing and, it is fantastic! California Tuffy, an interview and Trashman and furs. It sounds so great that it almost seems like it is a lip synch, but I don’t think the studio versions of these songs are this intense. Damn, I wish there was a full set of this.

Pavement- E-Werk, Cologne, Germany, 6/26/95 Full Set

Uploaded by: James Grimes.

No lineage or taping info provided. Perhaps this is known, but it wasn’t included in the YouTube footage. As I do some digging, I will add the information here.

Pavement has been featured before on SMA, but not thoroughly. As they formed in Stockton, they of course qualify for inclusion here. A thorough examination of their available output will probably require many, many hours, but as I encountered a tape of the audio (inferior quality to what was online already, sometimes that’s how it goes) for this show while working on other things, I figured including it here would be helpful.

Penelope Houston- Frankfurt, Germany June 1994 TV Broadcast Multicam Live Video

I understand that most people know Penelope from her time in The Avengers, but I have always loved her late 80s/early 90s work with Birdboys and other acoustic musicians as much, if not more.

I urge you to stop doing whatever you are doing and watch this. SO GOOD. Forward to 22min and listen to “Waiting Room”. Just gorgeous.

and thanks to Penelope, this music was my gateway to all of the SF/Davis/Bay “alternative” music such as Movie Stars, Camper Van Beethoven, Wannabe Texans, and many more.

7 Seconds- Negativ, Frankfurt Germany 10/21/93 xfer frm 1st gen soundboard audiotape Punk Hardcore

So, about 22 weeks ago (I never claimed to be fast btw), a guy named Christopher Lee Schneberger commented on the sac music archive fb group, requesting that this show be digitized. I finally got it done and the rebalance turned out really nice. This is the only soundboard that I know about, from the “Out the Shizzy” tour. Nice mix of older and newer(at the time) material.

Penelope Houston- NDR Studio Hamburg Germany 2/25/93 xfer from DAT Clone Live FM

Here’s a really nice quality FM show that I received in a DAT trade back in the 90s. It must have come from one of my German trading pals- probably Stef Kullik or Andreas Claus. This was taped off of FM by a friend of theirs- my tape is the 2nd clone.
