This week’s winner is #598- Carmela Thompson! You might know Carmela from her bass expertise in many San Francisco bands, including the newly reunited Short Dogs Grow. They even released new songs (on vinyl) a couple months back. Thanks for supporting, Carmela! Check your mailbox- you will be receiving a Vintage flyer from 924 Gilman!
ANY supporter to the Sacramento Music Archive (Patreon or One Time Donation) gets entries into weekly drawing for cool stuff. 1 entry per dollar given. One-time donations get into the drawing for 1 month following their donation date.
Sorry for the odd blur- I forgot to hide some personally identifiable info so I had to obscure that part.
Stay tuned for more prize announcements, as soon as I get time.
Tales of Terror- “The Cobain 50” KEXP Podcast 11/6/24
Huge thanks to Marc Malakie for letting me know that this existed. KEXP is doing a podcast series on the 50 bands that influenced Cobain (and others from the grunge scene). This is a really well-done deep dive into the early Sac punk scene, including quotes our friends Dennis Yudt and Rusi Gustafson. RC Boys! Kin’s Coloma! Sacramento Records! So cool.
Thanks to Dusty Henry for mentioning the sac music archive multiple times- his remarks at 24:30 is a nice testimonial for the site. I had no idea and it was pretty validating hearing it mentioned.
Soft Science is from Sacramento, of the shoegaze/dream pop persuasion, and as there’s a link to their KEXP session and a partial effort from the SMA principal back in 2018 when in Seattle as he was late and missed much of their set in the archives, I thought having my recording included would be nice as well.
There’s a few more ROIO-type efforts online that can be added at some point.
I wasn’t planning on posting this (ever) because it was a pretty tough weekend, but I was cleaning off the RAID and decided to do so to honor my friend Richard. I booked a trip to Las Vegas to see the Punk Rock Museum and meet up with my friends Dave and Jack from the band. I was also looking forward to seeing my old friend Richard Brown- his parents used to run Arjay Rock in the 1980s/1990s and we have been friends ever since. I had not seen him in about 10 years, when he lived in Portland and I was on a business trip up there. After I booked the trip, it was announced that my daughter was playing a all-city concert at a local high school on Jan 13.. I figured that I could still make this work since the tour was on Friday, my daughter’s performance was on Saturday, and AOD’s mini-concert in the garage at the PRM was Sunday. So I booked ANOTHER round trip ticket LAS-SMF-LAS so I could go see her performance on Saturday. I pulled it off with very little sleep and made it to her performance. After her show was all done, she ignored me- would not speak to me. Teenagers… To add insult to injury, I discovered that schedules at PRM are not set in stone, and it kinda revolves around Fat Mike’s schedules or whims.. and they ended up playing on Saturday. I missed the performance. Mike had a busy schedule and moved the performance time to suit his needs. I wasn’t even going to come back, but I had a rental car parked in the airport parking garage, so I kinda had to.. I am glad I did head back, because I was able to spend a good part of Sunday with Richard and his daughter Jasmine. Richard had been sick with a skin cancer but was able to make it out to both the tour and the Sunday hang. Richard passed away in June so spending that day with him meant a lot. I hope his daughter is doing well- Richard and his daughter were very close. It makes me so sad every time I think about it. You can see Richard in the video- I spotted him at 11:00 in the grey jacket, his daughter has the Descendents hat on. Anyway, sorry to be such a downer, Dave and Jack do a nice tour guide job. Lots of inside info on the east coast bands including the misfits. This is 23 minutes of a TWO AND A HALF HOUR tour. That Dave guy can talk!

Took a trip to Spain to catch the band on their latest Euro tour and recorded this one myself.. The mix on site was rough so audio didn’t turn out too good, but didn’t want footage to go to waste. I’d asked for permission to film but didn’t hear back, hope I didn’t ruffle any feathers

In the before times, Sean Hills would hold a Halloween covers show at the Press Club and Vinnie Guidera (and the Dead Birds) would play a set of Misfits songs. It was always a good time with a lot of singing along. Since that’s not happening this year (Press Club is gone from that location now, too), the band was kind enough to post this online for you all. Multicamera edited and all!
Here’s a cool bonus post for the day, and the first post that takes place in 2021!
Vinnie Guidera has a solo project called Waxen Hand that RIPS. It is his instrumental side project- his main gig with with Vinnie Guidera & the Dead Birds, plus he is an artist. Check this out, it grabbed me way more than expected. I bought the tape.
Here is what Vinnie has to say about it: “I wrote and recorded all the parts myself this summer, so the live sets are basically me muting an instrument and performing that part live. I know it’s not very live, but it’s the closest a one man band can get.”
It gets pretty challenging to find stuff for On This Date in History around the holidays. This one comes from those fun pandemic times, when the only way that you could see a band perform live was to fire up your pc and watch a live stream. City Mouse did this one for their Patreon subscribers, I think. You should sign up for Miski’s Patreon, it’s totally worth it. She communicates often and sometimes gives early access to new merch and tour leftovers. Plus, you support an awesome person and band.

Today’s on this Date in History has a purpose. Justin is the singer and guitarist in one of my all-time favorite Sacramento bands, The Polyorchids. He moved to Washington for work at least 5 years ago so the band, while still a band, do not play much anymore.
The good news is that The Polyorchids are playing a 10th anniversary show at the Press Club in January. I am not missing it and you shouldn’t either. Such a great band, and some of the politically motivated songs are still fully relevant.
Justin, I hope it is ok to post this with kids in the background and all. Let me know if you want it pulled down.
