The Government- Phono Select, Sacramento Ca. 3/24/24 4K UHD with schoeps audio hardcore punk

Last video post for the weekend and it’s a recent master recording. This was the middle band of that last Phono Select show with Deathryders. I don’t know much about them, except that they are from the bay area and they are not on discogs, from what I can find. This one is a bit darker than the rest since they turned out most of the lights for the set. First time I had seen a pit at Phono- I hope no records were damaged.

Deathryders- Phono Select, Sacramento Ca 3/23/24 4K UHD Multicam with Schoeps Audio Tales of Terror

There was a great show last weekend at Phono Select. It was supposed to be an outdoor thing, but the weather forced it to take place inside. I can’t say I have ever seen a pit in a record store before, that was interesting.
I filmed 3 of the 4 bands, but this is the only multicamera I did. It mostly went right, except for 2 things- the GH5S looks muddy. It might be the cine-d setting- this is the same exact lens and settings that I used for the Boardwalk show the week before. No idea why it looks like that. Also the gopro on the left side was covered by a band member and there was no way to get over there to fix it before they started, so this is a 3 camera job. No stage so I had to get my GH5S WAY up there in order to film this one.

Long Term Effects- Phono Select, Sacramento Ca 11/18/23 Schoeps Audience Master Modesto Band

This was the 2nd band on the bill, after The Moans played on Saturday. I was worried when one of the guitarists had a Meshuggah shirt and a Jackson metal looking guitar… but no metal here. Competently played alternative rock. I can’t remember a local band coming out of Modesto and playing up here… except for maybe Grandaddy early on.
They have a CD for sale at Phono Select if you like what you hear.
Danny’s F cancer series is such fun annual event. It raised over $3400 this year for American Cancer Society. Well done!

The Community- Phono Select, Sacramento Ca 11/18/23 4K UHD Master with Schoeps Audio

As part of Danny’s F Cancer annual fest, The Community played for the first time in 7ish years. I missed them the first time around so I was happy to see them… and having them in well-lit Phono was even better. I mentioned this before, but it seemed like everyone from the 2010s punk scene showed up for this one. It was nice to catch up with so many people, and to meet Neil from The Community.
Sorry it took so long to post this one, pluraleyes chokes on big files- I tried synching the schoeps audio with this right after the show, but it kept erroring out. I was planning to give it one last try then chop the video in half, synch, the rejoin the parts (which is as big of a pain in the ass as it sounds), and it decided to work this morning. Man, I wish I knew what made it work this time around.
Anyway, a good energetic set from the band. Danny was able to donate $7k to American Cancer Society as part of the 5 night run of shows.

The Moans- Phono Select, Sacramento Ca 11/18/23 4K UHD Master with Rode Video Pro mic Ramonescore

What a turnout last night for night 4 of Danny’s annual F*ck Cancer concert series. It seemed like just about everyone from the mid-2010’s punk scene came out for the set. You have one more chance to catch the F*ck Cancer series- Tonight at 7PM at Old Ironsides with Ghost Town Rebellion, Lamonta, and the mighty Knockoffs. I’m not missing it, and you shouldn’t either.
This was the first time I had seen The Moans in years- I missed their 2 shows in the past year due to vacations and illness. They are playing a bunch of newer songs, but they also carved out some time mid-set to play the hits. Good stuff. I picked up the “Writhing on the Wall” LP at the show too.
But yeah, you should come out tonight. It’s early enough so you can get your beauty rest before work tomorrow.

I also audio taped with the Schoeps but pluraleyes won’t export it. 4k file sizes are a PITA in more ways than one

All Girl Summer Fun Band- Phono Select, Sacramento Ca 9/8/23 4K UHD Multicam with Schoeps Audio

This was probably the most anticipated show of the year for me. I have been a huge fan of the band ever since I learned of their existence back in mid-2000s. I heard that Kathy from The Thermals had a side project and picked up “2” and went from there.
This one took a while to prep because I had so much trouble with the sound at the show. Kathy’s drums are pretty loud so Jen & Kim needed to turn up to be heard… which then overpowered the PA. Vocals were completely buried and drums were still too loud- I was able to EQ the schoeps recording and then Izotope Rx8 it to bring some vocals up. That’s the best I could do.
It was still a great show. I was a total dork and asked Jen to spell her last name about 3 times after the show. She probably doesn’t get many interactions like that anymore. Haha, sorry.
Thanks to the band for coming to town, thanks to phono and the promoter (Ilene) for making it happen. I really appreciate it.

Rose Melberg- Phono Select, Sacramento Ca 9/8/23 Schoeps Audience Master Audio Tiger Trap Softies

I was very excited to see this show- I have been a huge AGSFB fan for over 10 years, and adding Rose to the show was a big bonus…. unfortunately, some things didn’t work out too well with the taping thing.
First one was this set. I rarely have enough time to be 100% prepared for a show. It takes a lot of time charging battery packs and prepping memory cards for 4-6 cameras, plus prepping the audio gear. I thought I had it all dialed in.. right before I left, I checked the audio recorder and it showed 8:12- 8 hours and 12 min! Plenty of memory for the show. Well, that was actually 8 minutes and 12 seconds left on the recorder.
After (so I thought) recording the opener, I checked my recorder and it shut off. This was minutes before Rose was going to start, then I realized that the recorder’s memory was full. So I panic and start deleting files as fast as I can (including the opener! D’oh!). As a result, I missed the first 10min of the set or so. Ugh, I hate taping chaos.
Also, the PA did not seem to be working on the left side, which is where I should have been getting most of my vocals.. so although the recording sounds nice, the vocals are oddly distant.
Oh well, there are days like these. I don’t even know if I am going to post the AGSFB set- I need to figure out how to make it listenable.

Tommy Stinson- Phono Select, Sacramento Ca. 11/16/21 Partial 4K UHD Lumix GH5S

I bought tickets for this show before realizing that I had a team party for my daughter’s soccer team. So, I booked it over to Phono right after the party. I was a bit shocked at the crowd- there were only about 20 people there- where was everybody? The show was so intimate that I kept the camera in the bag for most of the show. Tommy’s manager was very nice and gave me the OK to film the last 15min of the show.
At times during the set, Tommy would step away from the mic, unplug his guitar and play a song or two. You get that on the 2nd song in the video. I had to boost the hell out of the audio (+31db!) on that song to level it out. So if you are wondering what all the noise in the background is, that is traffic on Fruitridge- it was that quiet.
Still a great show despite the light turnout.
It takes me about a minute to get my act together with focus and exposure.

Sad Girlz Club- Phono Select, Sacramento Ca. 12/8/18 Multicam Sacramento is Burning release show

I have a funny story about this one- I brought my kids to the show (3 and 8 years old at the time) and they met Shelby. She was super sweet to the kids and gave them a kool-aid jammer drink (kinda like a capri sun, but Kool Aid). She also told them that she has red hair from drinking too many red kool aid jammers…
So about 25 minutes into the set, I am filming away and my 3 year old MUST PEE NOW. It was that damned kool aid jammer. So, I haul my still-running camera into the bathroom(stops and starts are BAD for multicam), they do their business, and we are back filming a few minutes later. That’s why you hear the audio switch to a lower quality source at about the 24:00 mark.
Amazing job by Tromster to make all of this work together.
Epilogue: My daughter saw me prepping this footage for edit, and she said “oh, that is the lady whose hair turned red from kool aid”. HAHAHA!! 😀

Unsteady Heights- Phono Select, Sacramento Ca. 4/7/18 Canon HFG40 & Rode Video Pro Stereo Mic

So, umm, I screwed up. I was running out of battery so I lowered my monopod and changed the batteries about 9 minutes in… and then it seems that I FORGOT to hit my “record” button after the battery swap. So I was recording an awesome video with the thing on pause for the last 15-20 min of the set. D’oh! Sorry.
If you want a full set, check out the Cafe Colonial set from a couple months back.
