Rhett Miller- Starry Plough, Berkeley Ca 4/20/00 xfer from master 8mm tape complete show old 97’s

Here’s one that I filmed for today’s On This Date in History. There is better audio of this show as well- a soundboard tape- but I didn’t have time or permission to synch it up, so you get this. Maybe someday I will do a lossless capture and synch it up.
Man, I miss the Starry Plough. It has been years since I have seen a show there.

Equipment used: I can’t remember. Might have been the Sony TR-81 still.

Donner Party- Slim’s, SF 4/12/00 Sam Coomes from Quasi’s early band!

Have you ever been “late to the party” with a band? Well, Donner Party became one of my favorite bands in the early ’90s because I saw them play at UC David Coffeehouse in 1989. They blew me away. I had my video camera there and did not film because I was worried about running out of batteries (D’oh!)… so I figured I would just catch them next time. Then they broke up and I was to never see them again, or so I thought. In 2000, Innerstate records released their discography in a 2-CD set and they played a one-off show for it’s release. This was the only show they did, 10 years later. I know, because I approached Sam about doing a show in Sac and he politely declined. 🙂 This is my Sony TR-81 video mixed with Jason Sherrett’s Sonic Studios DAT recording. For Melanie Clarin DeGiovanni and anyone else who still loves and remembers the band.

This is part 1 only- you can find the rest of the show on Youtube

Luna- Bowery Ballroom, New York City 4/8/00 Soundboard CDR Clone Galaxie 500

Here is a pretty nice sounding Luna board recording for today’s On This Date in History. I got this back in the early days of CDR trading. CDR trading was good and bad in my opinion- it opened up live music trading and collecting to a lot more people- basically anyone with a PC- but it also had drawbacks. I received this one as a “CDR Clone” but the lineage of the recording is unclear. That lack of clarity was super common back then.
Many years ago, I made a Metallica trade with someone who got super pissed off at me and accused me of lying/cheating because he put a recording that someone told me was a low gen lossless source CDR through an analyzer and discovered it was mp3 sourced. I was like, I have no idea, just relaying what I was told.

Pretty good Luna set and the Bowery Ballroom is a big enough venue to enable a nice mix. Galaxie 500 song(s) as well.

Jeff Ott- House Show, Pomona Ca. Spring 2000 xfer from VHS-C Master Enhanced Fifteen 15 Crimpshrine

Man, am I glad to finally get this one posted. This tape was the hardest tape I have ever transferred. It took me unscrewing the screws in the tape’s shell, trying 4 VCRs, a VHSC camcorder(bought and returned 3 cables for this one), and 2 VHSC to VHS adapters. I will attach a pic of the pile of gear to my FB posts, so you can laugh along with(at?) me. Thank to Jordan Wolfe for unknowingly letting me borrow his battery-powered VHSC to VHS adapter- the one that actually worked.
Thanks to Donald Todd Reilly Jr. for trusting me with his tapes for longer than expected.
