Red Hot Chili Peppers- Stockton Civic Memorial Auditorium, Stockton, CA 9/20/98 xfer from master 8mm

Here’s another Gary Shurtleff video from the 90s. Man, he could bootleg video and get amazing results. This one took place in a smaller venue in Stockton which allowed for some great closeups. Check out gary’s channel at @bootlegcowboys
This one should look a bit cleaner than other videos out there since it is pulled right off the master, and the degrain was done in Adobe/neat video.

Here’s another Sacramento/Central Valley based video from Gary Shurtleff. Check out his YT channel @bootlegcowboys which has a ton of bay area stuff that he filmed.
Here is his capture of the peppers’ show in Sac, back on the One Hot Minute tour.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Bogart’s Cincinnati Oh 11/24/89 xfer f/1st gen audio cassette

There is a story to go along with this one. We had a pretty tight circle of R.E.M. traders back in the late 80s- Craig Hilmer, Carolyn Adams, Ken Dixon, and a few others like the guy who taped this- Jeff Jones. I think that’s his name, it has been a LONG time. So we were trading for a few years and he also taped with a pro walkman, so it was nice to get good sounding tapes from his area. A rumor started that he was giving/selling his tapes to bootleggers so CDs or Vinyl could be pressed. I asked him about it and he tried convincing me to join the bootleg pipeline ranks! Anyone who knows me would realize how anti-bootleg I am. I shut him down on the spot and never heard from him again. I wonder how he is doing.

This show was a little odd sounding- the bass and guitar were way back in the mix. I did what I could with EQ and Izotope.

As promised, here is a bonus 3rd post today, from Craig Hilmer’s collection. Thanks to Angelo Bertini for asking me to work it up for him.
Vocals were buried a bit. I ran an EQ job and a rebalance and it is pretty decent now, especially after the first couple songs. It kicks in at about 11 minutes.

Here is a rarity for you, at least that’s what the hardcore RHCP completists are telling me. Craig Hilmer taped this one back in 1989 and gave it to me when we met up in SF last year. Thanks Craig!

Craig used an Aiwa deck but with a little EQ, this one turned out ok.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Danceteria, Sacramento Ca 4/6/88 xfer f/Master Audio cassette Anon 2 version

HUGE thanks to Angelo Bertini for Telling Me What to Do! Angelo told me to digitize this RHCP show and by golly, I did it. If you want to tell me what to do, check the patreon link in comments.

Believe it or not, BOTH of our anonymous contributors to the archive taped this show, and neither recording ever circulated in trading circles. This is Anonymous 2’s version, which cleaned up pretty nicely after a dramatic EQ job.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Danceteria, Sacramento Ca 4/6/88 xfer f/master audio cassette Anonymous Ver

Here’s the last post of the day, and the last of our rare RHCP recordings. I had posted a different version of this show, from Anonymous 2’s collection (totally different guy). This is Anonymous’ version, done with his Aiwa handheld recorder with stock mic. I think it sounds pretty damned good for a non-pro 1988 recording. Can you believe that two people were recording this? Kinda blows me away. Both are still active in the scene today, which is another mind-blowing fact.

If you haven’t seen the new Hillel Slovak documentary, it’s worth a watch. I am a casual fan of the early stuff and it was excellent.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- The Old Fillmore, San Francisco Ca 12/28/87 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette

It’s another bonus audio post for you today! From the writing on the J-card, this one might have come from my old friend DC. It’s interesting that both the writing on Dennie’s tape and the newspaper ad refer to the venue as The “Old” Fillmore. I had no idea that it was commonly called that at the time.

This one sounds pretty good- I EQ’d the bass up for obvious reasons.

Big thanks to Angelo Bertini for telling me what to do on Patreon! While this video isn’t pristine quality, it seems to be the highest resolution out there. I can’t recall where I got this one- it might have been in a trade with Mike Pritchard. It seems that this was broadcast on community cable- there must be a better copy out there somewhere.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Ritz, New York City 10/31/87 complete show audio

Bonus post today, thanks to Angelo Bertini! He told me what to do and got this RHCP show digitized. No known lineage, but it has an odd printed tape label which makes me wonder if it was a bootleg being sold at record shows. It has that look.
Not too bad of a recording, probably a Sony D3 or equivalent.
