Boss Hog- Melarkey’s, Sacramento Ca. 11/28/95 Audio xfer from DAT Master

The reason that I dug this 11/28/95 show out of the archive is because Richard Dal Porto asked. Someone please let him know, if you are friends with him. Be sure to check the tape lists and ask for stuff to be uploaded- as long as it meets the criteria (the band or taper has a connection to sacramento), it’ll get done!
This one sounds better than I remember. The PA was not huge- John Taylor did a great job making the room sound good. John is still doing sound in town, as the main man at Harlow’s and also doing some den of sin gigs!

That Dog- Melarkey’s, Sacramento Ca. 11/28/95 Audio xfer from DAT Master

This show happened a couple of days after I moved back from Whittier. My good friend Jim Utz was a big That Dog and Boss Hog fan, so I recorded it for him. I got there a little late (I’ve been arriving late to shows for 30 years!) so you can hear me walk out of the bathroom and into the club. It takes a minute for me to stabilize the levels. Melarkey’s was such a cool little club and Brian had a ton of awesome shows there. I taped/saw Geraldine Fibbers, Sloan, Redd Kross, Richard Buckner and Barbara Manning (before we were friends- she treated me like a stalker freak. haha). I kinda miss that place.

Jack and Jill- KUSF, San Francisco 11/26/95 Band archive master cassette-CDR Jonathan Segel

It appears that the MDC video I posted this morning is already out there- right off the master tape- but was listed without a specific date. That’s how it slipped through the ol’ duplicate post check. That’s getting deleted, so let’s do one that I am sure isn’t out there.

This was Jonathan Segel’s 2nd band (I think) after his solo releases of the late 80s/early 90s. There was Heironymous Firebrain who were active from 1991-1994, and then Jack and Jill, active from about 1995-1997. I think that the lineup for this is Jonathan, Jane Thompson and Russ Blackmar.

The Dickies- Eugene, Or 11/25/95 xfer f/1st gen VHS tape Punk

On this date in history- Nov 25. S E E B E L O W

I am in a bit of a hurry today, so I will keep it short. This is another one from Jason Ross’ collection for On This date in History. Once again, it was done with the old canopus setup and clearly before I knew how to adjust audio levels. Haha.

Fugazi- Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles Ca 11/8/95 Master Video w/ DAT Master Soundboard Audio

I usually post obscure audio on Monday, but since I didn’t post on Saturday I will make up for it here.
Huge thanks to Gary Davis for digitizing his master video and sending it my way to be synched and posted- that was very kind.
This one had a funny story- I had heard that Fugazi was OK with soundboard recordings, but this was L.A. and the Shrine was huge. I was not holding out much hope plugging in to the board for this one. I sneak the DAT in and head over to the board and my old friend Greg Dean was there! We had worked together at Valley Parcel and now he was running one of the biggest? (best for sure) audio production companies in L.A. along with his friend Greg. He plugs me right in and lets me stand in the board area (the place was PACKED). Meeting Greg here and at the Geraldine Fibbers show in Aron’s records parking lot earlier in the year reconnected us permanently. It’s fun to watch Greg’s world travels with Green Day, Social D, Megadeth, and now Riot Games. Awesome.
The mix was great- I did a little rebalancing in Izotope RX8, boosting guitars and such.

Son Volt- 9:30 Club, Washington DC 11/3/95 xfer f/1st gen audio tape Sony WMD6C Uncle Tupelo Farrar

Man, am I running behind today. Here is today’s On This Date in History.

I wish I could remember who I got this from. This was one of my very late cassette trades, at a time when I was a DAT snob and didn’t trade cassettes with hardly anyone. I was also trying to collect every.single.son volt show at the time. I finally gave up on that project in 1999 I think. There are still hundreds of Son Volt/Wilco tapes to digitize, so stay tuned.

I really liked the tapes the D6 made when it worked properly. There is 1 EQ band that needs to be dropped a bit and the low end boosted up and you usually have a nice result.

Fastbacks-Delta Center, Salt Lake City UT 11/2/95 xfer f/ DAT Clone Soundboard FM Monkeywrench Radio

And here is the next night of the Fastbacks’ 2 night run at the Delta Center, opening for Pearl Jam. The broadcast cuts in mid-song and is 5 minutes shorter than the previous night’s recording, so this might be missing more than just that half song… but it is the full broadcast.
Kurt plays a different song than on setlist at about the 5min mark.

Fastbacks- Delta Center, Salt Lake City, UT 11/1/95 xfer from Soundboard/FM DAT Clone Monkeywrench

I recently transferred a couple of the 2,000+ DATS over here for my friend Derek Purtell. He helped with synching audio for that Scowl video, so I sent him some Fastbacks shows in return.
You might wonder how we got a board recording of this show, opening for Pearl Jam in a basketball arena. Pearl Jam used to broadcast the sets via a low power FM signal, live, at the venue. Monkeywrench Radio was the name of the pirate radio station they took along to broadcast the shows on the 1995 tour. Of course, enterprising tapers then brought an FM receiver to tape the sets.
I can’t remember exactly where I got these- I think that I got a clone of the master from one of the big PJ fans- Kurt Vogel or someone. Thanks!
