Christmas with Kiss- Sacto Active Rock, Sacramento Cable 11/30/93 xfer f/U-matic master Enhanced

I had this collections post all ready last weekend so I could do the rare “On this Date” and a collections post at the same time. And then I forgot. Ugh.

This is another studio master transfer and upgrade from the Sacto Active Rock umatic master tapes.

It’s pretty wild that “kiss” would do a community cable show, but if this isn’t them, it is the most convincing tribute I have ever seen of theirs. Who the heck pulled this off? You would think that Paul would be part of it, but who else? Hard to tell with the (well done) makeup.

Thanks to Skid Jones for the member info:
Gene – Paul Niklewicz
Paul – Chris McCann
Ace – Ned Hammad
Peter – Steve Marshall

Blur- KWOD Interview and Live in Studio, Sacramento Ca 11/26/93 xfer from pre-fm master tape Britpop

Here’s a nice one-off gift from Bonnie London. I met Bonnie while we were all waiting for doors to open at The Audio Nerd at Record Store Day a year or two ago. She was at RSD for a Blur record, and she is definitely the biggest Blur fan I know.

Alex Cosper from KWOD sent Bonnie these audio files a few years back, and they came my way last week. Thanks Bonnie!

I was able to figure out the date from some info given up during the interview compared to setlist.fm.

Fifteen- Emo’s, Austin Tx. 11/16/93 xfer from unknown gen VHS tape Live east bay punk

It looks like I have 3 more shows to post from the stuff I digitized for the Turn it Around doc. I sent a lot more, but I think the rest are probably on youtube already. There are still hundreds more audio & video shows to be digitized, so stay tuned…
It looks like the first 4 songs of the show are already posted to YT, this one is 6min longer. Shaky camerawork, grab the dramamine.

Spitboy- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 11/13/93 xfer from master soundboard cassette rebalanced

Since I screwed up the Fanny post today (the corrected version will be posted tomorrow), here is a nice consolation prize- Spitboy from Gilman, from Radley’s awesome trove of soundboard master tapes. Radley always comes through in a pinch. The mix moves around a bit, but I rebalanced it to a point where I think it sounds pretty nice.

Uncle Tupelo- KUSF Live in Studio San Francisco Ca 11/11/93 xfer f/1st gen audio tape Wilco Son Volt

I was going to post a Bloodloss video today (w/Mark Arm!) but the audio was so comically low on the DVD I had that it wasn’t even worth it. Need to re-transfer that VHS tape someday. Man, Mark has a thing for fronting classic Aussie garage/punk bands I suppose.

This one was taped by my old friend Tim McGinnis (R.I.P.). Dude was hilarious- back in the 90s, I was trading a LOT of tapes. I was probably trading with about 50 people at the same time. I heard that Tim said about me “Shayne is cool, but it kinda feels like dealing with the Walmart of traders”! Heyoo, c’mon. Maybe the costco of traders, but don’t lump me in with the Walton family. haha.

This one has a few songs live in studio and a short interview.

Uncle Tupelo- Slim's, San Francisco Ca. 11/11/93 Audio Only xfer from DAT Master Soundboard

I had 2 of my best concert experiences ever at Slim’s. One was the Donner Party video I posted the other day– so excited to see them, and knowing it was their one and only reunion show made it even more exciting.
The other one was this show. At this point, I had followed Uncle Tupelo for a week of shows through the midwest, for a run of shows in February of 2013 in california, and then this run in California. They would never let me plug into the soundboard. Luckily, Jake Roberts (early UT collector) secured permission ahead of time as part of a KZSU Stanford deal, so I was able to plug in as well.
The mix is excellent- no izotope required for this one. The soundman made a huge mistake and left the house music on during the first song of the set! I don’t think I ever saw that happen before or since.

Jayhawks- Zimba, Milan Italy 11/10/93 Proshot TV full show xfer f/ 1st gen VHS Enhanced alt country

I was looking for some new/old videos to post on the weekends, so I went through a stack of VHS tapes that I received in trades in the early 90s. I went through 1 stack OF 15 tapes and found a bunch of cool uncirculated stuff.
I got this one in trade from Gary Shurtleff back in early 94. He would get PAL masters of concerts that were broadcast on Italian TV mailed to him, and he would use a worldwide multiformat VCR to copy them over to NTSC for all of us. This was a HUGE deal back then- those VCRs cost about $1k at the time. Thanks Gary!
I am kinda floored that this is not on youtube. Has it really been uncirculated for 30 years? That’s nuts. Great Louris/Olson Jayhawks set.

The Beatles- Red and Blue EPK 11/8/93 xfer f/Capitol records VHS John Lennon Paul McCartney Ringo

Big thanks to Isabellaaskaan for letting me know that I had already posted Friday’s collections post previously- that Beach Boys’ EPK went up in June and I posted it again on Friday. Whoops, I forgot to check that apparently. Here is another EPK from Todd Nakamine’s collection that I know I have not personally posted yet and a search on YouTube doesn’t yield anything. These look like the usual promos with a red or blue border- nothing groundbreaking but good to document.

Tilt- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 11/6/93 xfer f/master pre-FM audio cassette Fat Wreck Chords Punk KALX

I was attempting to clear off my hard drive and I found some more KALX archive stuff that I had digitized and not posted, so expect a few KALX posts coming up here. My apologies for the slowness on this project- way too much stuff coming at me at once. Once I get Doug’s stuff done, I can refocus on other things… including a big ol’ box of tapes from a well-known local promoter 🙂
Anyway, this was one of those KALX things where they would broadcast the raw soundboard feed live, over the air… which was risky. The board mix could be bad, or someone could let a non-FCC approved word slip.
This one had almost no guitar in the mix. I popped it into Izotope and brought up guitar, drums and vocals. I might have overdone the drums a bit, but at least you can hear the snare. Mix gets better as the show goes on.
