Toad the Wet Sprocket- UC Davis Quad, Davis Ca 5/31/91 xfer f/ master audio cassette Marantz PMD430

Here’s another one I taped for On This Date in History. Continuing on the Rosebuds post from a few days ago- I think the PMD430 was new to me, so I was out taping as many shows as I could with the new setup. Toad the Wet Sprocket was playing a free show at UC Davis as part of the Take Back the Night event, so a bunch of us friends went together- John Conley, I think Mike Yoas was there, Jason Ellis..

According to Davis Wiki: Take Back the Night is an annual event that aims to support survivors of sexual violence, raise awareness, and promote action within our community to end sexual and gender-based violence. This event is held to create a supportive space for survivors and allies in the community.

What’s really cool is that the band stops playing and you can hear people marching and chanting. I can’t remember where on the tape it is, but I remember it pretty well when I was there and you can hear it on the tape.

Someone from internet archive uploaded this as an unknown source, and lists the gear as the PMD430 and a Sony ECM-909 mic, which is probably correct. That means that the Rosebuds show was probably done with the Sony mic and not the Nak. I shoulda taken better notes, man (in my Tommy Chong voice).

Rock City Angels- Session w/ Brian Robertson 5/13/91 xfer from audio cassette Johnny Depp Thin Lizzy

Time for a palate cleanse- this one is from Scott Capizzano’s collection of tapes.
Interesting backstory on this one- they had Johnny Depp as rhythm guitarist before he hit it big with 21 Jump Street in the late 80s. In 1990, the band began recording demos for a second album titled Lost Generation. They recorded some 80 songs, all of which were rejected by Geffen. Frustrated by Geffen’s lack of interest, they went to London and recorded six songs with Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson, which Geffen also declined to support. These are from that 6 song session.
At least one of these tracks was released in 2010, on a compilation called “Rock City Angels- Midnight Confessions”- the first song Shazam’d to that release, but the second song appears unreleased.

Audio Demo

Jane’s Addiction- Cal Expo Amphitheater, Sacramento Ca 5/30/91 xfer from 8mm master Enhanced 1080p

Here’s another one from Gary Shurtleff’s master transfer project I did last year. I can’t figure out why I missed this show- I was a huge fan of the opener (Mary’s Danish)- I bet it was because I had tickets to Lollapalooza less than 2 months later and they were headlining. Odd, I don’t even remember this one being announced or discussed.

Live Concert Video

The Rosebuds- Cattle Club, Sacramento Ca 5/26/91 xfer from Master audio cassette Nakamichi CM300 mic

Since the intro to the Sac Music Archive called out The Cattle Club, it seemed like a good idea to pull another Cattle tape from the archive for today’s On This Date in History. That’s right, there are more Cattle tapes that are not posted yet.

This one is an audience recording that I made with the huge beast of a deck- Marantz PMD430 and either 1 or 2 nakamichi CM300 mics. It was one of the better analog live taping rigs available at the time, but I ditched it for a DAT recorder a month later.

The band doesn’t start until about 2 minutes in- I left Dennis’ banter in and Jerry’s intro. I have no idea what the low end rumble is about at the start but it goes away after I adjust levels when the band plays. How is Dennis doing nowadays? Have not heard from him in a long time.

Not bad for a Cattle audience tape

Econochrist- 924 Gilman, Berkeley, Ca 5/25/91 xfer from master VHS tape Enhanced East Bay Punk

Before I get to today’s video post, can anyone explain why the Slambodians video I posted last Friday has 6,400 views? It seems that the ol’ YT algorithm loved it and sent it to the world. Odd. The other Slambodians video only has 70 after a month. I wish I could figure out what makes THAT happen…

Anyway, here is one from Rodney Parker’s collection of master VHS tapes. I bumped up the lighting on this one as the left side of the stage was super dark, while not over exposing Ben center stage. Looks pretty decent.

Live Concert Video

Dinosaur Jr- Citi Club, Boston Ma 5/18/91 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette J Mascis Complete Show

I’m getting a late start after back-to-back 7 seconds shows. Man, doing those multicamera videos gets more tiring the older I get. Also, today’s collections post will be late. I just finished digitizing it and I still need to process and upload. So tonight on that.

Today’s On This Date in History post is one that I got from the taper. It sounds nice, likely another Pro Walkman tape. For the image, I had the choice of this article or a scathing post-concert review, so I chose this. Man, what was up with reviewers in the 90s. I rarely saw a show I could not stand. The only ones that were not enjoyable to me off the top of my head were the Palace Hollywood shows because the acoustics were garbage and security was overbearing.

I think this is the last one from Rodney Parker’s collection. Thanks to Rodney for allowing me to digitize your old tapes.
This one was mistakenly attributed to Arica as filmer a while back- Rodney helped clear that up.

Generator- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 5/3/91 Xfer f/master VHS tape Tim Matt from Operation Ivy Rancid

Last June, I posted a video of this show from Arica Pelino’s VHS tape. She thought that she taped it, so I labeled it as a master and posted away. A while after that, my old friend Rodney Parker let me know that he actually filmed the show! That led to us discussing/figuring out how we can get these tapes re-transferred with the lossless setup and that finally happened late last year.

So here is a very clean version of the Generator video. There is also a soundboard tape of a different Generator show on the website/channel if you want a better audio experience. Thanks Rodney for sharing the tapes!

Generator was a very short-lived band that Matt Freeman and Tim Armstrong started prior to Rancid, and after Downfall ended. Someone from the band commented with the rest of the band info and I can’t find it. Please let me know so I can update the description.

Generator:

Tim Armstrong – Guitar, Vocals

Matt Freeman – Bass

Martin Ros – Guitar

Mike Branum – Drums

Green Day- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 5/3/91 Lossless xfer f/ Rodney Parker’s VHS Tape Enhanced Lookout

A few months ago, I posted this video from Arica Pelino’s collection. At the time, we had thought that Arica had filmed this video but Rodney Parker let us know that he was actually the filmer. A while later, Rodney kindly loaned me his tapes and I was able to do a fresh transfer of his VHS master tape. So this one should be a little bit better quality than the version on his (great) bay area punk shows youtube channel. You should check out his channel- he has a ton of awesome videos including a bunch from the past 10-15 years that are really cool.
