The Trouble Makers- Harlow’s, Sacramento Ca. 6/24/23 4K UHD Multicam w/ Schoeps Audio Garage Rock

The Trouble Makers opened up for The Kids at last month’s Harlow’s show to celebrate their 30th(!) anniversary of being a band. They formed while I was living in L.A. so I missed out on them until I discovered their music through the Knockoffs- the Knockoffs did a great cover of “Cursed Again” on their first album.
Unfortunately, this one doesn’t sound great even with the schoeps mics. I need to figure out how to position these mics better while I film. I didn’t help the situation by getting to the venue too late for a board patch. It’s not bad, and garage rock should sound this way anyway I guess.
Tim (vocals) was very nice- before their set, he was worried about my gopros on stage- I tried to tell them that they were meant to be abused. In fact, that Gel show resulted in one getting knocked over the drums (!!?) and one getting kicked around the floor of the venue. Still fine.

The Kids- Harlow’s, Sacramento Ca 6/24/23 4K UHD Multicam with Schoeps audio 1970s Punk Band Belgium

The Kids started in Belgium in 1976, releasing 6 albums and 12 singles over the next 10 years. When I saw that Brian McKenna was bringing them to Harlow’s, I could not believe it. I think this was the first time they ever played in Sacramento- I can’t recall them playing and I am old.
Anyway, I talked to the band and they were totally cool with me doing my video thing- how nice is that? Thanks to Luc and the guys for a killer show. So much energy for guys older than me, playing songs that are 40+ years old.

The Snares- Harlow’s, Sacramento Ca 6/24/23 Schoeps Audio Master Incomplete

I had a busy day on Saturday and got to this show late. What happened to shows that started at 9pm and went until 2am? These early starts are killing me. OK, enough complaining.
I walk into Harlows and the 2nd band is already playing. They are kicking ass. I then see Matt K. Shrugg on drums and realized I have totally f*cked up by missing part of this set. D’oh. It sounded like they were close to finishing (and I didn’t have permission to film), so I didn’t pull out the camera.. but I did start up the schoeps mics and I got about 20 min of the set. You will hear some nuances in quality as I move around the club.
So bummed I missed filming them.

Good Riddance- Old Ironsides, Sacramento Ca 6/3/23 4K UHD Master Schoeps CCM4 Audio Santa Cruz Punk

As promised, here is Good Riddance’s set at the TINY Old Ironsides. I am still shocked that they played such a small venue. The place sold out and it was PACKED in there. I was planning to do multicam video, but I got there late (read about the comedy of errors on the urethane post). It’s a good thing I didn’t try- my gear would not have survived that crowd.
I made a last minute decision to bring the HFG60 and use a LANC controller, which is like a remote control that lets me pan/zoom and make adjustments. Good thing I did, since I had to jack up my monopod to the ceiling in order to get a decent angle of the band- Old I’s stage is low. Old I’s stage also had some issues with lighting recently, but that has mostly been corrected. As you can see, there is no fill light coming from the side of the stage that I film from.
Despite all of the issues, I think it came out pretty good. The audio sounds fantastic, thanks to the schoeps.

Urethane- Old Ironsides Sacramento Ca 6/3/23 Schoeps Audio Master Incomplete Steve Caballero Faction

Another story for you all, this time for mediocre Monday. As you can see, this post is only 3 minutes and 48 seconds long. Why?
Well, it’s kind of a long story. First, I had planned to get there early and do multicamera video of Urethane (featuring Steve Caballero of the Faction) and Good Riddance. But, I wasn’t feeling very well (something I ate) and I was debating whether I should go at all… and then my daughter asked me to play soccer with her and she blasted me with the ball straight into my nuts, which put me down for the count for a bit longer. She is 12, 100lbs of muscle and in competitive soccer fyi.
I finally leave from home in Orangevale and go down hwy 50 to Mather Field (about 15-20min away) and realize that I don’t have my preamp for the mics. I must turn back.
I finally get to Old I and I find a spot to park right out front! I get in the club and Urethane is almost finished with their set. The place is also packed, so this is recorded from the very back of the main room. Rest assured that the Good Riddance video will sound way better than this!
Totally bummed to miss urethane. How cool is it that 2 skate rock shows sold out in sac on the same night
