Spastik Children- House Party, Pinole Ca. 12/31/86 xfer from master cassette tape Metallica Side Pro

Here’s 22 minutes of pure chaos from Wayne VanderKuil’s collection. This show is a totally different level of chaos compared to the other Spastik Children shows in early 1986. This is the first without Cliff(Jim Dammit on Bass), it was a house party, and people are clearly having a good time. I heard that potato guns were involved as well. Thanks for getting this one documented, Wayne!
Since I rarely publicize the website, it might be a good time to remind people that there are over 4,000 posts of Audio/Video/Photo media at http://www.sacramentomusicarchive.com, including this and many other Metallica shows right off the master tape.

Big Black- Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel, Providence RI 12/30/86 xfer f/low gen soundboard cassette Albini

Here is a last minute replacement for today’s on this date in history post. I was planning to post a really great D.I. show from 1991 only to find out that Sony Vegas was not able to process the video correctly. 2 tries and 4 hours later, I discover that the D.I. show actually took place on 12/31. JFC. Never mind. It’s really great, I’ll get to it one day.

So I pulled out this cassette. It was a clean recording but the drum machine overwhelmed the entire thing. Izotope did a great job in rebalancing- it’s pretty damned good!

Exodus- El Dorado Saloon, Sacramento Ca 12/29/86 xfer 2nd gen audio cassette Complete Headlining Set

Happy Monday! Today has turned into a pretty cool day for all of you Gen X Sacramento Alt and Metal fans. Both the On This Date and the Patreon Voter’s choice are from the 80s/90s Sacramento Metal and Alternative scenes.

The first one is this. This was taped by Ricky Miramontes, who passed away shortly after taping this show. For a stretch there, it was Me, Mark Martin and Ricky pretty much covering Sacramento’s punk and metal scene. His tapes always sounded “best”, even though none of us ever used pro gear back then.

This was Exodus’ first proper headlining gig in Sacramento. They did the emergency headline set at Jones Hall in Roseville in May of 86 due to Anthrax’ cancellation, but this was their first “billed as a headliner” show. Crazy that they were playing pretty much the entire Pleasures of the Flesh album a year before its release.

Pirates of Venus- The Farm, SF 12/28/86 xfer from master tape! Audio Only Tales of Terror

I have a ton of stuff to post, but I bumped this one to the front of the line for a friend. Andy Andersen (former Attitude Adjustment/Condemned Attitude/Attitude/Two Bit Thief vocalist) called me yesterday and we reminisced for about an hour. He saw me in the Crowdshot movie and got back in touch with me! It was nice to hear from him again! Andy asked about POV, and he was surprised that I had recordings of them. POV had members of Verbal Abuse, Decry and Rat’s Ass (Pat Strattford) from Tales of Terror on vocals. They were probably my favorite late-80’s “rock and roll” act that came out in the wake of Guns and Roses’ success. This was recorded on a very unprofessional Panasonic handheld recorder. Don’t expect perfect quality.

Neurosis- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 12/27/86 xfer from low gen soundboard tape rebalance

This tape is a bit of a mystery. I asked Wayne V where it came from, and it’s not clear. He was trading at the time with Chris Dodge, Mark Martin, and a few others. I found that this didn’t come from Chris or Mark… so the most plausible source is Tim Yohannon. Wayne used to go over to the MRR house and copy as many tapes as possible, and the way that the tape is hurriedly marked makes it look like it came from there. That’s pretty cool.

Final Conflict- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 12/27/86 xfer from low gen audio cassette

This is another James R Edmonds creation- at times, he would borrow a microphone from the soundman and do an audience recording with the mic lined into a boombox. That’s the case with this one. Sounds pretty decent- it clearly has more clean low end than a typical 80s punk rock audience recording.

Bl’ast! – The Farm, San Francisco Ca 12/27/86 xfer from master soundboard cassette rebalanced BLAST

It’s going to be old Farm week here, apparently. This is another soundboard master from James R. Edmonds’ collection. This 3 and a half minute clip is all that exists- it seems that tape was started then stopped. Also, there is pretty much no guitar in the mix- they must have been blasting volume from the stage. I did my best to bring up guitars, but you can’t do much when there is nothing there. Despite all of this, Bl’ast master board from 1986! C’mon, that’s awesome!!

Impulse Manslaughter- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 12/27/86 xfer from master soundboard cassette rebal

Here come 3 sets (or partial sets) from Day at the Farm 3, courtesy of James Edmonds. He worked at the Farm and recorded shows through the board there occasionally.
First up is Impulse Manslaugter out of Chicago. They were one of two touring bands to play this DATF. The mix was really clean on this one, so I was able to bring up the guitar and bass. Big thanks to James for trusting me with the master tapes.

Active Ingredients- Bogart’s, Cincinnati Oh 12/26/86 xfer f/1st gen VHS tape Midwest Punk Hardcore

Here’s a nice stage shot video for today’s On This Date. Active Ingredients were from Lexington Ky who self-released a few things in the mid 80s, which are now sought-after in collector circles.

This one is from Jason Ross’ collection- hopefully he remembers the filmer so they can get proper credit. First stage shot video I have ever seen at Bogart’s.
