Jordan Wolfe stopped by today and dropped off a BIG box of tapes. There is a lot of stuff you will want to see, but this is the one that he wanted to post first. FS at CBGB!
I will let Jordan tell the story(and edit the post here), but he told me that they *really* wanted to play CBGB before it closed. A few months before it was scheduled to shut down, they received a call to open a show. So they did what any reasonable band would do- they drove from California to NYC to play the show!

Here’s a post for John Moulton, Channing Lewis, Michael Crow, and Jersey Joe. Everyone is trying to figure out who the guest is playing the strat in this picture. My guess is Ira Kaplan from Yo La Tengo, but Dave calls out a special guest that is not intelligible. but is definitely not Ira. Can anyone solve the mystery of the mystery Strat guest?

Soul Asylum played 2 nights at CBGB in December of 1988. This one doesn’t sound quite as good as the 12/8/88 show, but I mixed out as much distortion as I could. Happy Monday everyone. Before I post anything that I did not personally record to the sac music archive, I check around to see if it is already out there in similar or better quality. I got this tape back in the 80s from Craig Hilmer, I think. There were a few of us who were huge CVB fans back then and we traded tons of the band’s live tapes. I saw that this show was on archive.org and figured there was no need to post this… but the one on Archive is a board tape, which I never even knew existed! This is an audience recording.
Some industrious soul with more free time than I should matrix the 2 sources together.

In my 37+ years of taping and trading, there have been a few shows that I received in trade that were life changing. There was Wayne Vanderkuil’s recording of Attitude Adjustment from Ruthie’s on 6/6/86 that made me a lifelong fan/friend of the band. There was the Redrum show that I taped from Oasis Ballroom on 12/29/85 that made me realize that board tapes can sound good (thanks Greg Williams)… a DAT clone of a Slobberbone board tape from Mike Shiner that made me dive into the band’s recorded output… and many more.
But this tape is probably the only one that I listened to more than the rest of a band’s recorded output combined- I got this in trade from Mark Martin shortly after the show happened, in early 1986- many months before the record was released. I was a huge fan of the new crossover movement so I played this nonstop.
Other notable things about the show- this is the first show with “classic lineup” vocalist Chris Notaro. Also, Kirk Hammet comes up to play a lead on Hub Run, and Tommy from Straight Ahead (somewhat famously) tells Hammett to get off the stage.. which leads to Kirk hitting Tommy with the guitar and Tommy getting thrown out. That happens at about the 35:00 mark.
Just a legendary show by a legendary band. How the hell is this not on youtube yet? This was one of those tapes that everybody had on their trade list in 1986. Is it really that rare? Note: This is not on the “Turn Back Time” comp that was recently released.
