Uncle Tupelo- Bogart’s, Long Beach Ca. 2/25/93 xfer from Hi8 master Videotape enhanced Wilco Farrar

Haha, I have had this one on my desk for over a month because I thought I needed to synch DAT audio with the video. It turns out that I forgot my DAT rig that night. I remember now- I was too worried to turn around and get the gear, because I was afraid of missing the show. It turns out that I got there WAY too early and ended up waiting forever for the show to start. Oh well.
Ken Coomer breaks a snare drum during the set and it takes forever to get it replaced.

Luna- Bogart’s, Long Beach Ca. 11/7/92 Transfer from Hi8 Master for first time Ever!

It was strange. Every time I went to Bogart’s, something bizarre and memorable happened. One time, it was when Uncle Tupelo played there and broke their snare on the first song and had a huge delay waiting for another. Another time, it was Penelope Houston and meeting Todd Nakamine, and we have been friend ever since. Or this one- Dean Wareham mentions this show in his “Black Postcards” book, because a guy in the front row was so irritating that he agreed to fight at the end of the set. Like I said, bizarre. The vibe of the club just seemed to invite it.

David Lowery Band (Cracker)- Bogart’s, Long Beach Ca 3/22/91 from 1st gen tape Camper Van Beethoven

I pulled out a really early Cracker tape for Today’s “On This Day in History” post. I can’t remember his name, but a guy came by my apartment back in 1991 and asked for a bunch of Camper van Beethoven tapes. He was writing a book on the band and wanted some recordings to help with context. He had a lot of recently recorded tapes of the David Lowery Band that I copied in return. DLB was Cracker before they had the name!
This appears to be the band’s 3rd show ever, if setlist dot fm is to be trusted. There is a show on setlist on March 20 in Diamond Bar, which no tape exists to my knowledge. Then my list shows March 21 at the Casbah in San Diego(have a tape of that one), then this one. They were playing NINETY MINUTE sets right out of the gate, with a bunch of Camper Van Beethoven songs. It’s a pretty fun listen.
Finally, check out that lineup- Walter Salas Humara from the Silos opening (logical) and… Petula Clark opening the show?!? That’s wild. I moved to so. cal. the following year- just missed this.

Buffalo Tom- Bogart’s, Long Beach Ca 2/9/91 xfer from 1st gen soundboard cassette rebalanced

for today’s On This Day in History, I settled on this one. I got to see (and videotape) Buffalo Tom for the first time 4 days later in San Francisco and they were amazing. Just a wall of sound at the Kennel Club. I have had this tape for 20+ years and the mix was a bit unbalanced- predominantly drums and vocals. I decided to give it a shot in Izotope and I am pretty happy with the results. The guitar is back to the forefront, where it belongs with this band. It takes a few minutes for the mix to settle down, so give it a bit.
Look at that list of shows for 2/9/91 in the L.A. region: Rik Emmett at the Coach House, RUDY RAY MOORE at CLub Lingerie, and the Ventures at the Palomino Club. How could someone even decide what to attend? Crazy.

Steelpole Bathtub- Bogart’s, Long Beach Ca. 4/19/90 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape LIVE

Here’s another video from the old “going through lists and figuring out what’s uncirculated” project. . This is the last one that I have from the Rob Thompson recordings. Thanks to Jim Utz for sending his VHS tapes years ago to be digitized. Just like Babes in Toyland, I don’t know why this is so short. Did Rob get busted for filming? Dead battery? Did he just get tired? Dunno.

Buck Pets- Bogart’s, Long Beach Ca. 1/19/90 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Live

Here’s another video from the old “going through lists and figuring out what’s uncirculated” project. This one comes from Jim Utz’ collection that he sent to be to be digitized a few years back. His friend (I CANNOT remember his name- same guy who filmed Nirvana at Bogarts) filmed a few shows after he moved to L.A. from the midwest and sent copies to Jim.
Side note- Universal Music told me that my video from Cattle Club was going to be used in the Nirvana “with the lights out” box set, then they asked for the contact person who had this video, so I helped them get in touch… I didn’t know that they were contacting him to use his video in place of mine in the box set. haha, oh well. Michael Meisel made sure I still got paid and they made my name in credits and easter egg as a result. That was nice of him.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Bogart’s Cincinnati Oh 11/24/89 xfer f/1st gen audio cassette

There is a story to go along with this one. We had a pretty tight circle of R.E.M. traders back in the late 80s- Craig Hilmer, Carolyn Adams, Ken Dixon, and a few others like the guy who taped this- Jeff Jones. I think that’s his name, it has been a LONG time. So we were trading for a few years and he also taped with a pro walkman, so it was nice to get good sounding tapes from his area. A rumor started that he was giving/selling his tapes to bootleggers so CDs or Vinyl could be pressed. I asked him about it and he tried convincing me to join the bootleg pipeline ranks! Anyone who knows me would realize how anti-bootleg I am. I shut him down on the spot and never heard from him again. I wonder how he is doing.

This show was a little odd sounding- the bass and guitar were way back in the mix. I did what I could with EQ and Izotope.

Active Ingredients- Bogart’s, Cincinnati Oh 12/26/86 xfer f/1st gen VHS tape Midwest Punk Hardcore

Here’s a nice stage shot video for today’s On This Date. Active Ingredients were from Lexington Ky who self-released a few things in the mid 80s, which are now sought-after in collector circles.

This one is from Jason Ross’ collection- hopefully he remembers the filmer so they can get proper credit. First stage shot video I have ever seen at Bogart’s.
