Flaming Lips- BBC, Maida Vale Studios, London England 5/3/99 xfer from CDR close of DAT master FM

Here’s a cool one for On This Date in History- the Flaming Lips do a live BBC studio session a couple weeks before the release of The Soft Bulletin. Great stuff and nice quality.
When I looked online to check if this has been posted before, the only source I found was an audience video clip… which is kinda bizarre for an in studio session. I clipped a frame from that video for the image.

Wilco- GLR Interview and Live in Studio w/Jeff and Jay, London England 2/8/99 xfer from DAT Clone FM

For today’s On This Day in History, I have a short radio session from Wilco. Well actually, it is Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett from Wilco doing a couple songs in studio. This is great timing, as the Postcard From Hell group was just discussing favorite Wilco albums, and I would have to say this one- Summerteeth- is mine. I can’t stand to listen to anything after this one.

Metallica- Fan Can 2:Astoria London 8/23/95 Donnington 8/26/95 Tuktoyaktuk 9/2-3/95 Aberdeen 6/24/96

I don’t usually post commercially released stuff, but a) This was a fan club only limited edition release and 2) It doesn’t seem to be on youtube, which is kinda unbelievable.

Fan Can is/was a fan club-only product that usually gave some rare audio on a CD, rare video, and extras. This can had a door hang for example.

This is the VHS tape only from Fan Can 2. I found this and 1 other Fan Can VHS tape at a thrift store for 99 cents each! I went to pull one of them out to play and discovered that part of the VHS shell was damaged and the tape needed a complete reshell. I spent WAY too much time reshelling the tape to make it like new. Can’t remember if it was this tape or the other one, but this one plays great!

I didn’t have room in the description, but this is a lossless transfer done with my usual gear.

Rock City Angels- Session w/ Brian Robertson 5/13/91 xfer from audio cassette Johnny Depp Thin Lizzy

Time for a palate cleanse- this one is from Scott Capizzano’s collection of tapes.
Interesting backstory on this one- they had Johnny Depp as rhythm guitarist before he hit it big with 21 Jump Street in the late 80s. In 1990, the band began recording demos for a second album titled Lost Generation. They recorded some 80 songs, all of which were rejected by Geffen. Frustrated by Geffen’s lack of interest, they went to London and recorded six songs with Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson, which Geffen also declined to support. These are from that 6 song session.
At least one of these tracks was released in 2010, on a compilation called “Rock City Angels- Midnight Confessions”- the first song Shazam’d to that release, but the second song appears unreleased.

Tank- Woolich, London England 5/21/81 xfer from unknown gen cassette rebalanced R.I.P. Algy Ward

I woke up today to awful news, making this an even more mediocre Monday than usual. Algy Ward from one of my all time favorite bands, Tank, passed away. I have loved their albums (especially those first 4) for about 40 years. I never got to see the band perfoem- I had recently said that I would fly anywhere in the world to see a set by them… well, that’s not happening. Damn.
Algy had an amazing early career- starting with The Saints, then moving over to The Damned when they were at the top of their game, then starting Tank. They then put out 4 great albums, broke up after the 5th, and then he seemed to lose momentum. I bought all the box sets and later releases but no US tours. I do have the one video from Boston on my website/channel, so check it out if you are interested.
This appears to be a live FM broadcast- especially since the MC appears to call the crowd a bunch of c*nts after Tank’s performance (!).
I did everything I could to fix the quality- I took to Izotope Rx8 and de-fluttered it(it had some nasty high end flutter), then rebalanced it and boosted guitar and bass. It’s still kind of a mess, but I enjoyed it.
