The Enemies- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 4/18/25 4K UHD Multicam w/ Schoeps Audio Lookout Records Punk

This was such a fun show and an amazing lineup. Tension Span, Scene Killers, The Enemies, and the Subhumans. It was like an East Bay Punk reunion!
I happened to see The Enemies the last time they played, before this. It was 10 years ago at the benefit show for AK Press w/Green Day and Bobby Joe Ebola. I don’t know if it was due to my familiarity with their material now, but this show totally blew me away. So much energy. Kudos to Larry Boothroyd for filling in on bass for the set.
The most heart warming moment that I have seen at a show in years happened during this set. Mike’s (guitar/vocals) 3 daughters were side stage, dancing along and singing along with the songs. They were probably not old enough to enjoy the experience 10 years ago. It was really cool.
The only downside to the night was the audio. I mean, Schoeps mics are really good quality, but I usually get either a board tape or multitrack stubs to mix down. They changed their setup and neither were available on this night. Bummer. Sounds decent in the room.

The Enemies- Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco Ca 8/10/03 xfer from VHS-C Master Tape Punk

Alright folks, here is a rare WEEKDAY video from Arica Pelino’s collection. She likes the weekday video posts, so here you go.
Arica followed the band around on a tour with Subhumans in March of 2003, and then filmed this one on one of the same tapes from later in the year. This one is probably one of the better sounding ones out of the set.
Oh, by the way, The Enemies are playing for the first time in years at the BOB fest at Gilman in April. Other killer bands are on the bill. Grab a ticket and come say hi to me. I’ll be the nerd with the video cameras, as usual!

The Enemies- Roxy, Hollywood Ca 3/31/03 Xfer from VHS-C Master Tape Enhanced Lookout Records Punk

Late post from the collections today, but it is a short one. This one comes from Arica Pelino’s videotapes. She likes her stuff to be posted on weekdays, so you get a surprise weekday video!
It’s only 2min and 35 seconds long. If the Roxy was anything like when I lived in L.A., they probably shut her down. I remember filming the San Diego and Coach House shows of Luna’s July 1994 tour with full permission, so I swagger up to the door at the roxy.
Security Dick: “what’s that?”
Me: “A video camera. I have full permission from the band (smile)”
SD: (no smile) “We don’t care. Take it back to the car. It’s not coming in here tonight”
So, I took it to the car and snuck the DAT in and audio taped. Jerks.

Anyway, The Enemies are playing for the first time in a long time… maybe since I saw them at Gilman, opening for Green Day in 2015. I can’t tell since setlist.fm has multiple bands named “enemies” all commingled. They are playing with the Subhumans, Scene Killers (Jesse Townley’s first US show in years) and Tension Span (Noah Landis from Christ on Parade’s great new thing). Buy a ticket soon if you want to go.

The Enemies- Colonial Theater, Sacramento Ca 3/30/03 xfer from VHS-C Master enhanced Lookout Records

I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting that facebook introductory post to get noticed the way it did. Thanks for checking out the website and the facebook group! I had a different post queue’d up today that was not Sacramento related, but I figured I should put up something from Sacramento today, so here you go. I tried to do a different show (from Cattle Club) at the last minute but it is taking forever to process and pluraleyes won’t synch it. So, let’s try that one in a week or 2.
This one is from Arica Pelino’s collection. She doesn’t like videos to be posted on the weekends- I hope she can forgive me. I heard that The Enemies might be coming back to play Gilman in April, but I don’t think there has been an official announcement yet. That would be fun to see, I saw them for the first and last time at the Green Day Gilman show in 2015 (video available on the archive).
The enemies were opening for the Subhumans on this tour. Looks like Arica followed them up to the northwest, down to L.A. and over to Sac.

The Enemies- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 6/21/02? CD Release show xfer f/ 8mm master tape East Bay Punk

This tape in Arica Pelino’s collection just had a label of “Enemies Gilman CD no. 4 Release”. I did some research and I think it might be from 6/21/02- the band played Gilman all the time, but the list(steve) shows that this date was a CD release show for the band. I checked discogs and if their database is complete, they had their 4th (and final) release on Lookout in 2002. So I am running with it. 6/21/02.

Enemies- The Minnow, Alameda Ca 9/22/01 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Enhanced Lookout Records Punk

Early post today.. and I just realized that I did not prep anything from Chris Eng’s collection for today. The plan for each weekend (for now) is 1 Arica video, 1 Chris video, and 1 recent 4K Video from me. Whoops! Sorry Chris. They are on the hard drive, just need to prep them.
Let’s do another Arica video. I really wish I knew Arica back in 2001- not only because she is totally cool, but also because she threw this amazing show for her birthday- The Frustrators (w/Mike Dirnt), The Enemies (with her brother Mike), and one of my all-time faves The Dickies. She sent me a poster from this show a few years back.. I think the Eddie Haskells might have played too, but no video for them.
Anyway, here is the Enemies’ set. I got pretty lucky and was able to film The Enemies’ reunion show, opening for Green Day at Gilman in 2015. Along with Mike, they had some East Bay Punk legends in the band- Dave Ed (Christ on Parade, Neurosis), Jason Willer (many bands, but probably best known for being in Charger and Jello Biafra and the GSOM). This band also seemed to plant the seeds for Alaric, a GREAT dark punk band that was around in the 2010’s– check them out.
Picture is really clean on this one, audio is a bit distorted. Angle partially obstructed.

The Enemies- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 7/22/00 xfer from master/1st gen soundboard tape Lookout Record

Here’s one from Arica Pelino’s audio cassette collection today. I know I just posted a video of hers last week, but she was also up for audio.

The Enemies played their first show in about 10 years (9 years, 11 months) this past Saturday at BOB fest at Gilman. All of the bands were great that night, but The Enemies were mind-blowingly next level great. I don’t know if it was because Mike’s daughters were side stage, singing their hearts out or what, but it was one of the best sets I have seen this year… if not THE best.

I video’d that show, but it’s not even close to being ready yet so here is a show from about 25 years ago. The mix was not perfect on this one, so I rebalanced it to bring up guitars and vocals. It gets better after about 2 minutes.

Recorded by: Arica or the band

Equipment used: nakamichi dragon and M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card
Rebalance in Izotope Rx8: Vocal +3, Bass +5, Guitar +3.

Happy Holidays everyone! I really appreciate all of you who come and check out all of this stuff I post daily. Thanks to all of the people who have trusted me with their tape collections as well. I really enjoy this and you are helping spread joy to others, and it elevates my mood too. I hope everyone had a good day.
Here is one from Arica Pelino’s collection of audio tapes. One from her brother Mike- this is probably Mike’s tape, or right off Mike’s master. It’s short- cuts after only a song and a half. It sounds really good- I would have guessed that it was a studio recording if it wasn’t labeled live.
