Toiling Midgets- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento 8/18/22 4K UHD

Here’s a rarity- I totally lame’d out on a show and stopped video’ing about halfway through because I was tired. What can I say? Work has been rough and the kids had early wake-up calls for school all week. Better to bail out than falling asleep at the wheel on the way home…

Cult Strange- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento 8/18/22 4K UHD Post Punk Goth

After the Me Gustas set, I headed over to the Cafe. I try to support them any chance I get, so why not see 2 shows in one night? I missed the opener, who I heard were very good. These guys were next- they are from Oakland and they were awesome. I love that guitar tone. Matt (sound) did a nice job getting a little vocal in the mix- they were playing WAY too loud and overpowering the PA.

The Me Gustas- Harlow’s, Sacramento Ca. 8/18/22 4K UHD Master Surf Rock Canon HFG60

Through some miracle of technology, this one uploaded and Youtube rendered it to 4K overnight.
It has been a long time since I have seen a crowd react so positively to a local opening band opening for a touring act. Most people come to these shows to see the headliner, and I think I can safely assume that most have never heard the local opener. People went nuts over the Me Gustas, dancing during the songs. It was really nice to see, couldn’t happen to nicer guys.
PS: They have an album out, GREAT cover artwork!

Accused AD- Plaid Pig, Tacoma Wa. 8/6/22 4K UHD Multicam Hardcore Punk Metal

What a wild night. I was on vacation doing family stuff and I get to the club super late. Across the street from the venue is 2 biker bars and there are literally HUNDREDS to harley davidsons lined up and people packed in the bars and flowing out onto the street. I got lucky and found a parking spot right next to one of the bars and across the street from the venue.
I get in there and this is the punkest punk club I have been to in years- dank and humid, graffiti everywhere, and the drink selection consisted of PBR, Miller and Coors light. I talk to the soundman about plugging into the board and he tells me that the outputs are blown- there is no way to get a board mix. So instead, I settle into an area that should be safe from the pit and a good place for audio… and then that side of the PA starts smoking. The soundman assures me that it is working fine, but when Blaine starts checking the mic, nothing is coming out of that main.
So I scramble over to the other side of the stage and get close to the PA, hoping I get decent audio. Nope- it was garbled and distorted. So instead of a board mix, or the rode video pro stereo mic, you get Canon HFG50 stock audio. I tried.

Minus 5- Harlow’s, Sacramento Ca 8/2/22 4K UHD with Matrix audio Young Fresh Fellows Scott McCaughey

This one has a long dumb story. I was planning to shoot a multicamera of this one, since one of my all time favorite musicians, Kurt Bloch was on drums for this tour. That did not work out. First, I had trouble leaving on time- work got in the way and I did not have my gear organized for multicamera. I scrambled together some stuff, and left with enough time to arrive, get permission, set up and film.
Well, I forgot my rode mic at home so I had to go back and grab it, which cost me time. I had planned to arrive at the show at 7pm (doors), but I did not get there until 7:40. Then, I went to grab my bags and run out of the car, and I can’t find my fcking car keys. I burn more time digging around the car and find them on the floor, wedged between the center console and the driver’s seat. So I am finally charging my way up to the door and I see Steven King and Cory Vick. I have that “deer in the headlights” look in my eyes at this point and ask them if they know when the Minus 5 are going on. We don’t know so I got to the club and Steven introduced me to John Ramberg. I got the ok to tape and I ask when they are going on- they go on in 5 minutes! Holy sht- multicam is out of the question at this point.
I go to the soundboard to plug in and John Taylor (king of sound at Harlow’s) is super patient with me and gets me set up. I go to pull the Sony M10 out and power it on… no batteries. Kill me. I had given up any hope of a board tape when I realized that I have an extra video camera, so I pull that out and use it to record the soundboard audio.
After all of this, they performed without a drummer- Kurt did not perform due to illness- get well soon my friend.
Despite all of the chaos, it was an awesome show. 10/10 would do it again.
oh, and to all of my northwest friends- this NRBQ/Minus 5 show is a must see – pick up tickets for Saturday if you can!
