Richard Buckner- Melarkeys, Sacramento Ca 6/21/97 xfer f/DAT Master Soundboard Alt Country Americana

Here’s a show that I taped back in 1997 for today’s On This Date in History. Richard Buckner had a bit of popularity back then- this show took place in between his major label releases Devotion and Doubt, and Since. He continued to release music on a number of indie labels until 2013. He released a book in 2020 as well.
I remember that the show was seated (which was rare for the Melarkeys shows I attended) and somewhat sparsely attended. Still a nice quality show during a well-regarded era.
Levels bounce around a bit to start, then a couple times later on. I did my best to even them out.

Audio Live Concert

Yo La Tengo- KCRW Brave New World, Santa Monica Ca 6/11/97 xfer f/ 1st gen audio tape live in studio

This one comes from my collection. This was one of the last audio tape trades I did in the late 90s. I can’t remember the person I got this from, but I received a bunch of KCRW/KROQ radio broadcast stuff that he taped.

This one is odd because the tape starts with an interview with James McNew while Ira & Georgia are playing ambient noise in the background. I think they interview other members while the ambience continues. They play some “real” songs later on.

Audio Live Performance

Son Volt- WXPN World Cafe, Philadelphia Pa 6/6/97 xfer from DAT FM Clone Complete Broadcast

I am pretty shocked that this hasn’t been posted to youtube yet. Son Volt in their prime, playing a 25 min set for World Cafe. Are all of these World Cafe shows syndicated and broadcast widely? Maybe they only did this one on WXPN. Anyway, sounds good and it is a nice performance. Typical interview, haha.

Old 97s- Barleypalooza, Barley House, Dallas Tx 6/1/97 xfer from Hi8 Master w/Soundboard audio 97’s

Please read- request for help below.
Here’s another collection that I let fall off the radar- Neil Werries sent me his Hi8 masters to digitize a couple years ago. He did a lot of great stuff in the late 90s/early 2000’2 in the alt.country/americana genre. I sent his tapes back right away, but the last thing I posted was in 2023. Sorry Neil!
Why haven’t I posted this show yet? Well, he has a few shows that are multicamera but since both angles are filmed with analog equipment, it is not easy to time align the angles for edit. IF YOU ARE GOOD AT TIME STRETCH/ALIGNMENT AND YOU WANT TO HELP WITH THIS, please email me at shaynestacy@hotmail.com and I can let you know what’s up. Maybe someone will have some down time over the holidays and can help out.
These are the multicamera shows that need alignment:
this show (old 97s barleypalooza 6/1/97)
Gourds barleypalooza 6/1/97 (one angle is already up on the channel)
Old 97s- fitzgeralds 7/4/97 (2 angles)
Silos- lexington ky 7/26/97
Silos- Louisville Ky 7/25/97
I think that’s all of them.

OK, on to this one. I happened to have a DAT clone of the soundboard of this show (not from Neil) so I figured that I would synch it up with one of the angles. Turned out alright. I love this era of the 97s, so it was nice to get at least 1 angle out there in good quality. It’s a pretty special show since Jon Rauhouse joined the band on pedal steel for a good portion of the show, playing a bunch of stuff off Too Far to Care 2 weeks before the album was released. Dayum.
I might work to rebalance the audio in sections if someone signs up to align angles for edit- that pedal steel is WAY up in the mix.

Sutcliffes- Barleypalooza, Barley House, Dallas Tx 6/1/97 xfer from Hi8 master tape incomplete

Let’s mix it up today and post a couple of short clips from some of the archives people have sent me.
The first one is a semi-obscure band called the Sutcliffes. I was trying to prep/align some analog camera angles of a Gourds 3 camera thing from this show, and I noticed that this was at the end of one of the tapes. I have heard of them because they played with Old 97s at times in the 90s, but I had never heard them. Discogs describes them as “Skiffle revival band from Dallas, Texas, founded in 1990.”, and they are not wrong. Their first album is even called Wall of Skiffle.

Limp- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 6/97 xfer from pre-fm master cassette tape East Bay Pop Punk

Last night, I was prepping up some more KALX content to post this week, and this 4min clip by Limp happened to be at the beginning of another tape. I might have the full Limp set here somewhere on cassette or reel, but I have not come across it yet. So, here is the 1 song… just in case that’s all that exists. Good band- enjoy!

Rise Guys Band- Boardwalk, Orangevale Ca 6/1/97 xfer from 8mm master tape 93 Rock

Alright, so I thought I was going to post another installment of ““I forgot to post them a long time ago and was shocked when I searched the sac music archive and they were not there”.. and when I went to post it, I had already posted it years ago. Whoops. That left me without anything to post today, and I didn’t want to break my 6 month long streak of one post every day..
So I started digging through my lists of stuff, and I happened upon this. I think that John Nelson gave me these tapes to digitize years ago. It seems that I didn’t post any of them, except for the old pope a lopes footage…
Anyway, the Rise Guys (popular Sacramento radio morning talk hosts) put together a band and played some shows. Part music, part parody songs, part performance art. Hopefully John can give more context. Audio is a little distorted due to 90s camcorder technology.

The Gourds- Barleypalooza, Outside of Barley House, Dallas Tx. 6/1/97 Set 1 xfer from Hi8 Master

For the middle of this long weekend, here is a nice quality show from Neil Werries- this is the first of THREE sets that the Gourds did at this fest, so I figured I would post them separately. I think there might be soundboard audio of this show floating around out there somewhere- if any of you old DAT traders have it (Mike Shiner, Michael Pemberton, etc), let me know! I know there is a board of the 97s.. I have that one.
