Throwing Muses- Berkeley Square, Berkeley Ca. 3/28/89 xfer from master audiotape

Here’s an upload for a friend of Corbett’s- John Kelly.
So let me talk about the taper- Anonymous. He is my best friend and we have been friends for over 30 years. We met at the legendary exploited/DRI/Dr. Know/Dag Nasty show. Back in the 80s, he was not only working to get the best quality audio recordings (he bought his Sony D6 first, then I HAD to have one), but he went to a lot of really cool shows that I blew off. This is one of them. Looking at his tapes, I see recordings by The Lemonheads(I didn’t go), Swans(Went), and more from Berkeley Square. Thanks to anonymous!

Thin White Rope- I Beam, San Francisco Ca. 3/20/89 Enhanced xfer from Master VHS Tape

Again, HUGE thanks to Paul Ashby for trusting me (and usps) with his master VHS tapes.

Here’s what I did to enhance this one:
VHS Playback/Transfer with JVC HRS9800U w/TBC on, into Canopus ADVC300
Adobe Premiere Elements to birghten, increase contrast, haze removal. Noise reduction via Neat Video.
Export to MP4 at 1080p.

Live Concert Video

NOFX- Chatterbox, San Francisco 3/11/89 xfer f/1st gen DVCAM tape Fat Mike Wreck Chords full show

HUGE thanks to Alfie Kulzick for sending this DVCAM tape to me. Even though the DVCAM tape appears to be transferred from the master tape in super slow speed, the quality is still pretty decent. The audio does suffer from dropouts, so I plan on playing around with the audio channel settings to see if I can make it any better.. but first priority was to get it transferred ASAP.

Some of the other bands on the tape suffer from tape damage- it seems that the damage was on the source tape and not the DVCAM. If you see any major glitches or dropouts on this transfer, please let me know. I did the ol’ ffwd/rew thing to try to ensure the tape was as good as it can be. The picture was super clean for a tape this old.

Alright, back over to VHS.

Live Concert Video

Das Damen- WFMU Live in Studio, E Orange NJ 3/11/89 xfer from audio cassette complete

TLDR version: Forward to 3min to get rid of the tape issues

For today’s This Day in History, I pulled this one out of the tape collection. It doesn’t seem that I got this from George Norton (who taped a bunch of these), as this one has some hiss and bad phasing for the first 3min. Forward past that if you want to hear decent quality. So, unknown taper/unknown gen.

This takes place after their 2 SST albums were released, and about 2 months before they recorded the Mousetrap LP for Twin/Tone.

Audio Live Performance

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Showcase Special Events Ctr, San Antonio Tx 3/10/89 xfer f/master audio tape

Here is a rarity for you, at least that’s what the hardcore RHCP completists are telling me. Craig Hilmer taped this one back in 1989 and gave it to me when we met up in SF last year. Thanks Craig!

Craig used an Aiwa deck but with a little EQ, this one turned out ok.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Showcase Special Events Ctr, San Antonio Tx 3/10/89 xfer f/Master Audio Tape

As promised, here is a bonus 3rd post today, from Craig Hilmer’s collection. Thanks to Angelo Bertini for asking me to work it up for him.
Vocals were buried a bit. I ran an EQ job and a rebalance and it is pretty decent now, especially after the first couple songs. It kicks in at about 11 minutes.

Soul Asylum- DOORNROOSJE, NIJMEGEN HOLLAND 3/8/89 xfer from cassette master tape full complete show

I called another audible for the On This Day post. After looking for shows from March 8, I discovered that I have a bunch of consecutively numbered CD-R’s from holland of bands like Soul Asylum and fIREHOSE – right off the master tapes- and I have no idea who I got these from. These shows took place too early for them to be Jan the Lazyman’s work. I think I traded with other Holland folks like Thomas Willer Jensen on DAT… ugh. I can’t remember. If you taped this, please let me know who I can give you credit.
Anyway, this SA show sounds great- nice and clear. It lacked a bit of low end so I EQ’d that up in the mix. This era of the band was my favorite.
