Communique- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 7/18/03 American Steel xfer from pre-fm master tape

I learned something new with this tape. I didn’t know that the 4 guys from American Steel added a keyboard player in 2002 and their new sound was so different, they decided to change their name. They put out a couple of albums and EP’s under the Communique name. Cool!
I checked youtube and see a grand total of zero live shows posted of the band, so this one might be somewhat of a rarity. Thanks Rick!

Eddie Haskells- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 7/18/03 xfer pre-fm master cassette east bay punk

I don’t have much info on this band- they were an east bay punk band from the late 90s into the early 2000’s. The released a few CD’s and a 7″ before fading away. One member was Ange Andrews, who went on to play in the Black Furies. That’s all I’ve got about them.

Me First- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 12/16/00 xfer from pre-fm master cassette

Has it really been 2 weeks since I posted any KALX stuff? Man, I need to get back on it. I thought that this was a Me First and the Gimme Gimmes tape- then I started listening to it and realized that there was a totally different bay area band called Me First. They consisted of Bob Conlon, Chris Lenart, Denise Campanaro, and Helen Williamson and had a few CD’s and 7″s released, including one on my ex-brother in law’s label, Sympathy for the Record Industry. They sound great, love to learn about cool new/old bands.
From Rick Sylvain’s collection. Performance starts at about 3:30min.

Subincision- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 7/1/00 xfer from pre-fm cassette

Here’s one of the better sounding KALX in-studios I have heard. The quality and mix definitely improved over the years.
Subincision were an East Bay punk band who had a few albums out on Substandard Records in the late 90s/early 2000’s. This incarnation of the band included John Mendiola, Cory Moore, Mike Montoya, and Pat McMains.

The Wunder Years- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 2/13/99 xfer from Pre-FM Master cassette Pop Punk

Here’s the last KALX tape for a bit- time to move over and digitize more of Wayne’s stuff. I really enjoy these KALX sessions- it exposes me to a bunch of regional bands I had no idea existed.. and a lot of them are really good. The band consisted of Brian Moss, Caitlin Love, Josh Staples, and Shane Stevens. Looks like they put out a couple of albums (on CD) and a 7″.

Poontwang- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 1/16/99 xfer from pre-FM Master Cassette East Bay

Time for more obscure bands- there is next to no info about Poontwang online. It looks like Fast Mike (SF Scene in the mid-90s) was a male go-go dancer for the band, and the band was active in the mid-90s. 4 songs on comps according to discogs. That’s about it. If anyone has more info, please chime in.

Fitzners- Kalx Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 8/29/98 xfer from master pre-fm sounboard cassette tape

I performed a number of searches on the google, and there is nothing at all about this band anywhere. Any info would be appreciated. They sound great- man, the east bay was such a hotbed of pop punk in the 90s. Even bands who feded into obscurity (like these guys) are great.

The Bobbyteens- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 4/25/98 xfer from pre-fm master tape

Back to the KALX archive today. The Bobbyteens were a garage rock’n’roll band from South City, California, formed in 1996. Russel Quan was in the band, who I have a ton of mutual friends with. Danielle Pimm, Karen Singletary, Lisa Schenberg, and Tina Lucchesi were in the band as well.
They have a bunch of releases on smaller independent labels, along with one each on Estrus and Burger.

The Donnas- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 1/17/98 xfer from pre-fm master cassette Lookout Punk

Here’s one that some folks will enjoy. There is a lot of really cool stuff in Rick Sylvain’s box of tapes that I still need to digitize. It’s nice to hear a quality live set from The Donna’s early days. Thanks Rick!
I figured that since I googled “The Donnas KALX” and Steve’s The List popped up, I would use that as the image for the post. Find the Donnas post in The List! Everyone from those days knows about The List- no explanation necessary.
