Time for more obscure bands- there is next to no info about Poontwang online. It looks like Fast Mike (SF Scene in the mid-90s) was a male go-go dancer for the band, and the band was active in the mid-90s. 4 songs on comps according to discogs. That’s about it. If anyone has more info, please chime in.

Here is one from Rick Sylvain’s collection that is not one of his Friday Night Live shows, and it is an actual touring band playing live in studio! This took place right after the band’s 2nd release, and their first on Sup Pop “Empty Bottles Broken Hearts”.

Another Monday- I hope everyone is having a good one. Keeping with the Shrimp band name theme from last week’s KALX post, here’s another one. Now that I think about it, this is more than just shrimp that these 2 have in common- they are both side/follow on projects by 2 members in each band who were in popular bands. Last week it was the DKs, this week is Death Angel. Big Shrimp consisted of Andy Galeon and Dennis Pepa from Death Angel, along with Larry Santiago and Mike Pracale(who coincedentally, happened to do layout and design on a 2016 Death Angel album).

I had a little time over the long weekend to clear off the hard drive on the audio capture PC, and I had forgotten that I digitized a bunch of KALX stuff from Rick Sylvain’s archive. Thanks Rick! Here is the first one. Jumbo Shrimp was Klaus Flouride and East Bay Ray’s late-90s surf project. This performance seems to be rare. Nothing on youtube except for the album, and setlist.fm shows 1 concert- at Slim’s in 1997. I hope everyone kicks back and enjoys this rarity on memorial day. Rick’s audio levels on this were fine, but the music was rather low, so I did my best to bring up the music levels without making it sound disjointed. Let me know if I should just post the raw file. And yes, that is Weezer’s “Buddy Holly” to kick things off on this recording.

I performed a number of searches on the google, and there is nothing at all about this band anywhere. Any info would be appreciated. They sound great- man, the east bay was such a hotbed of pop punk in the 90s. Even bands who feded into obscurity (like these guys) are great.

Another Monday, another KALX live in studio post. This band is somewhat of a mystery. Most of the other obscure bands that I have done in the KALX archive have a member or 2 in other known bands. These guys were from San Leandro and I can’t find anything on them at all. I even wrote down their names during the interview section, and still nothing. If anyone knows anything about them, let me know. Discogs was no help with a whopping 53+ bands named out of order. I gave up trying to find them.
UPDATE: Jason Medeiros just gave us the full rundown of the band: Info: Out Of Order was an East Bay garage/punk band that existed sometime from ’96/’97 till around early to mid 1999. We played mostly house parties and a few venues here and there. Along side, Cheapskate {Hayward CA skate-punk/hardcore band} and other lesser-known long-forgotten bands around Oakland,Hayward,San Leandro,Alameda…ect area. Our band & friends of ours bands, basically created our own scene. Sending tapes, asking venues to get on shows, was going nowhere for us and our friends bands,so we did it ourselves. Hustle places that didnt have live music to do shows, rent halls and house parties…ect A demo was recorded. I have it somewhere in my cassette archives,{along with this KALX recording & others}… Jason Medeiros-guitar/vocals Sam Diosdado-bass/vocals Marc Delacruz-guitar Tony Larez-drums

Let’s go to the KALX archive for today’s collections post. I just finished digitizing a few reel to reels from Rick’s boxes. Most of them transferred ok, but one of the reels was squealing so bad upon playback and audio quality was poor, so I quit for a bit. Lots of really cool stuff upcoming from KALX. This is one of Rick’s Friday Night Live shows that I transferred a while back from a cassette. Jack Killed Jill had a couple of albums out on New Red Archives at the time of this session. Eric Matson (Guitar) also played Guitar on the Wynona Riders’ album on Lookout Records.

Last audio post for the week. That was more for me than you because these mid-week holidays have my sense of time ALL screwed up. It’s been over a month since a KALX archive tape has been posted– now that we are about finished with TM Doug’s stuff, we should be able to get something up from each person at least once a month or sooner. This one is great- Cellblock 5 ripped through their set so fast that Rick Sylvain had to scramble to fill time, and then he put on a Cindy Lee Berryhill replay to fill up the rest of the hour. The mix on this one was a bit odd- the interview segments were at the appropriate level, but when the band would start playing the levels would drop. I did my best to boost them up, but if you hear levels jump… well, that’s why. Sorry for all the run-on sentences and bad grammar today. KALX friends- I can’t seem to find Rick Arroyo(Sylvain) with my new account on fb to friend him. Please share with him if you can. thanks.

This one took some investigative work. The last time I posted something from the KALX archive, the band Cellblock 5 did not play a long enough set so Rick had to play something to fill up the rest of the time. This usually results in a really cool archival recording from KALX’ vaults being shared, and that’s what happened here. Enjoy 9 minutes of pristine sounding cindy lee berryhill! I checked newspapers.com and the most logical venue/date for this would have been 3/5/98 when she played Club Du Nord in San Francisco. I’ll keep the post vague unless Rick or someone else over at KALX can confirm.
