Sparklehorse- GLR Session, England 7/22/98 xfer from band archive tape
Wow, news is Ozzy Osbourne passed away today. His determination and focus during that last show was amazing to see. I have one uncirculated Schoeps recording that I am waiting on the OK to put out. You might get ozzy today, or you might not.
Here is a few sad songs that seem appropriate for today’s On This Date in History. From Jonathan Segel’s tapes that he loaned me about 25 years ago. Thanks Jonathan!

Jack Killed Jill-KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 7/18/98 xfer f/master audio cassette Wynona Riders
Let’s go to the KALX archive for today’s collections post. I just finished digitizing a few reel to reels from Rick’s boxes. Most of them transferred ok, but one of the reels was squealing so bad upon playback and audio quality was poor, so I quit for a bit. Lots of really cool stuff upcoming from KALX.
This is one of Rick’s Friday Night Live shows that I transferred a while back from a cassette.
Jack Killed Jill had a couple of albums out on New Red Archives at the time of this session. Eric Matson (Guitar) also played Guitar on the Wynona Riders’ album on Lookout Records.

Pearl Jam- Arco Arena, Sacramento Ca 7/16/98 xfer from 8mm master Enhanced 1080p Upscale
It’s video weekend! I have been trying to mix it up with the weekend posts and add 1 from Gary’s masters, 1 from Parisi’s VHS tapes, and 1 of mine that I recently did each weekend… but recent videos are starting to pile up around here so that approach might change soon.
Anyway, here is one from Gary Shurtleff’s pile of masters. You can see all of his videos @bootlegcowboys if you want to dive in… this one is degrained and upscaled to 1080p after a transfer on the camcorder-firewire-dell setup over here. That zoom lens could REALLY get close up to the stage from the back of the arena. Wow.

Cindy Lee Berryhill- Live Concert, Bay Area 7/4/98 bcast date xfer from pre-fm soundboard cassette
This one took some investigative work. The last time I posted something from the KALX archive, the band Cellblock 5 did not play a long enough set so Rick had to play something to fill up the rest of the time. This usually results in a really cool archival recording from KALX’ vaults being shared, and that’s what happened here. Enjoy 9 minutes of pristine sounding cindy lee berryhill!
I checked newspapers.com and the most logical venue/date for this would have been 3/5/98 when she played Club Du Nord in San Francisco. I’ll keep the post vague unless Rick or someone else over at KALX can confirm.

Cell Block 5- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 7/4/98 xfer from pre-FM master cassette
Last audio post for the week. That was more for me than you because these mid-week holidays have my sense of time ALL screwed up.
It’s been over a month since a KALX archive tape has been posted– now that we are about finished with TM Doug’s stuff, we should be able to get something up from each person at least once a month or sooner.
This one is great- Cellblock 5 ripped through their set so fast that Rick Sylvain had to scramble to fill time, and then he put on a Cindy Lee Berryhill replay to fill up the rest of the hour. The mix on this one was a bit odd- the interview segments were at the appropriate level, but when the band would start playing the levels would drop. I did my best to boost them up, but if you hear levels jump… well, that’s why.
Sorry for all the run-on sentences and bad grammar today.
KALX friends- I can’t seem to find Rick Arroyo(Sylvain) with my new account on fb to friend him. Please share with him if you can. thanks.
