Keeping with the theme of posting something from each Sacramento venue, here is the Old 97s at one of those all-day radio station deals. Mix is pretty good, and they put on a good show.

There was a time when I was a huge Old 97s fan. I would see every one of their shows in California. This is the time that they played the UCD quad for FREE at lunch. It was hotter than hell, so I started my DAT machine plugged into the soundboard and went to video. I came back after the show and my poor DAT had heat stroke- the display was black and it stopped. What a bummer. At least the video turned out nice. Filmed with an Aiwa DV camera(don’t know model #) and stock microphone.

Here is a crazy one- Old 97s make an appearance on a sports talk radio station. The radio hosts clearly are not accustomed to hosting musicians, or maybe their demeanor is always this abrasive.. but it is an entertaining listen.
Interview and 3 songs in studio: Lonely Holiday, Jagged and Crash on the Barrelhead.

Sorry for the late post. Given the storm and its aftermath, I am pretty sure that nobody in Sac was missing the post for today anyway. Since it is so late, you get a short audio post. Murry is the secret weapon of the Old 97’s. Looking forward to seeing them in a few months in Chico and Roseville.
I have another really cool Murry related post ready, but I wanted to ask him if it is was ok to post… and I can’t find his email. Murry, please message/email me if you see this- thanks!

I tried de-static’ing in Izotope and it made it sound weird.
Many years ago (20ish?), I got some really cool stuff from a guy- I think his name was Riley. It’s been a long time and lost a lot of my lists and correspondence. Anyway, he was friends with the band so look for some really cool/old stuff coming up.
This one was at the end of one of the tapes he sent. I think some of these versions were released on the 3-LP reissue of Fight Songs a couple years back, but I can’t tell if all of them are exactly the same.
Tracks are: Weightless/The Villain/Murder or a Heart Attack (w/organ)

Here’s one that I have been wanting to get enhanced and synched up for a long time. Finally, thanks to King Bean, Adobe Premiere/Neat Video and Izotope we can get it done. There are a lot more Old 97s videos still to do from the 1998-2002 time frame.
The 7th Note was a pretty big venue in SF for the 97s at the time- I think it was the old Wolfgang’s building- King Crimson played there around the same time as this. The band played the tiny Starry Plough the night before, and then this huge place the next night.
I remember it being full and stuffy in there. I don’t know if that is why my auto-focus freaks out often, or if it due to the disco ball in the foreground. It corrects itself during closeups, so it is still watchable… and it sounds pretty nice.
The last song cuts off (they played longer than expected), but the soundboard is complete. So when you see a blank screen with audio only during the last song, that is how it is supposed to be.

Audio/Video synch by King Bean
Now that I have multiple amazing software programs to enhance and synch video and audio, I guess it is time to start taking some of my old master soundboard recordings and synching them up to my old master videos.
Here’s the first one. I was able to take the video and denoise it a bit. I did not mess with the lighting- Rhett is already overexposed a bit and Philip is a bit dark.. so not gonna mess with that. I took the master soundboard and boosted the hell out of bass and guitar, and drums a little bit.
TL/DR version: It will sound better about 5-10min in. The board mix takes some time to settle.
Old 97s at their peak, in one of their favorite clubs in the bay area. So awesome. I think this might have been their last time playing there.

My daily post is super late, but it is a really cool one. I got this from someone at the label, but I can’t remember who… on a VHS tape in 6 hour mode! D’oh. Oh well, it still looks good. This is the complete 1 hour set that was performed live in studio- about half of this was never broadcast, and a quick search shows it was never released on DVD or posted to YT.
It’s awesome that the band is still together today and releasing quality material, but this is their best era, in my opinion.

Here’s a video of the Old 97s in their prime- back when Rhett was nerdy and he beat his acoustic guitar so badly that it caused an arm injury. The unique aspect of this show is that Philip Peeples is not on drums- he had an inner ear infection so former manager Mike Schwidler is doing the honors (and does quite well). The show itself is a drunken party- they are playing a pub- and the atmosphere is loose and fun. In fact, Rhett drops a lollipop out of his mouth and kicks it from the stage mid-song.. and nails someone in the front row! It was funny. Enjoy! Filmed with a Sony TR-81 camera.

Here is the other show from that Old 97s VHS tape- this one RIPS. Man, I love this era of the band and I am so thankful to have seen them so much back then… but this may be my favorite 97s video from the ’90s. The lighting on stage is uneven so I just denoised the pic and left the lighting as is.
Oh, one other thing about the Stubb’s show from yesterday- I mentioned that Ken made mistakes at the beginning of the set. He let us know that he had a new guitar tech- first time out- and they totally screwed up the tuning the guitar. Haha, that must be a nightmare. I experienced that once in person- Girlschool in 2014.
