Old 97s- Starry Plough, Berkeley Ca. 11/5/98 xfer from master video tape + Enhanced DAT Master Audio

Now that I have multiple amazing software programs to enhance and synch video and audio, I guess it is time to start taking some of my old master soundboard recordings and synching them up to my old master videos.
Here’s the first one. I was able to take the video and denoise it a bit. I did not mess with the lighting- Rhett is already overexposed a bit and Philip is a bit dark.. so not gonna mess with that. I took the master soundboard and boosted the hell out of bass and guitar, and drums a little bit.
TL/DR version: It will sound better about 5-10min in. The board mix takes some time to settle.

Old 97s at their peak, in one of their favorite clubs in the bay area. So awesome. I think this might have been their last time playing there.

Old 97s- Austin City Limits TV Show 1/26/98 COMPLETE UNAIRED FULL SHOW xfer f/ 1st gen VHS Live 97’s

My daily post is super late, but it is a really cool one. I got this from someone at the label, but I can’t remember who… on a VHS tape in 6 hour mode! D’oh. Oh well, it still looks good. This is the complete 1 hour set that was performed live in studio- about half of this was never broadcast, and a quick search shows it was never released on DVD or posted to YT.
It’s awesome that the band is still together today and releasing quality material, but this is their best era, in my opinion.

Old 97s- Starry Plough, Berkeley Ca. 8/8/97 Direct xfer from 8mm Master Tape!

Here’s a video of the Old 97s in their prime- back when Rhett was nerdy and he beat his acoustic guitar so badly that it caused an arm injury. The unique aspect of this show is that Philip Peeples is not on drums- he had an inner ear infection so former manager Mike Schwidler is doing the honors (and does quite well). The show itself is a drunken party- they are playing a pub- and the atmosphere is loose and fun. In fact, Rhett drops a lollipop out of his mouth and kicks it from the stage mid-song.. and nails someone in the front row! It was funny. Enjoy! Filmed with a Sony TR-81 camera.

Old 97s- Fitzgerald’s, Houston Tx 7/4/97 xfer from Hi8 master Enhanced 97’s Rhett Miller Americana

Well shoot, I have not posted this late for a while. I hope this one still gets noticed because it is PEAK Old 97s. I loved that 1997 tour, it was so much fun. This one come from Neil Werries collection, shot by NH. Neil shot an angle at the back of the venue.
We COULD make this a multicam along with 3 or 4 of Neil’s other videos, if you can help us time stretch/match the angles. The problem with old analog gear is that they tend to drift apart from each other as the show progresses. If you are good at aligning audio to video, you can really help. Please reach out via the website or (my name) at hotmail.com. Last time I tried this, I got hacked and my old fb account was disabled. Let’s hope it goes better this time. Please reach out- we could use your help.
Here is the list of analog multicams that need alignment:
old 97s barleypalooza 6/1/97
Gourds barleypalooza 6/1/97 (one angle is already up on the channel)
Old 97s- fitzgeralds 7/4/97 (2 angles)
Silos- lexington ky 7/26/97
Silos- Louisville Ky 7/25/97
I think that’s all of them.

Please read- request for help below.
Here’s another collection that I let fall off the radar- Neil Werries sent me his Hi8 masters to digitize a couple years ago. He did a lot of great stuff in the late 90s/early 2000’2 in the alt.country/americana genre. I sent his tapes back right away, but the last thing I posted was in 2023. Sorry Neil!
Why haven’t I posted this show yet? Well, he has a few shows that are multicamera but since both angles are filmed with analog equipment, it is not easy to time align the angles for edit. IF YOU ARE GOOD AT TIME STRETCH/ALIGNMENT AND YOU WANT TO HELP WITH THIS, please email me at shaynestacy@hotmail.com and I can let you know what’s up. Maybe someone will have some down time over the holidays and can help out.
These are the multicamera shows that need alignment:
this show (old 97s barleypalooza 6/1/97)
Gourds barleypalooza 6/1/97 (one angle is already up on the channel)
Old 97s- fitzgeralds 7/4/97 (2 angles)
Silos- lexington ky 7/26/97
Silos- Louisville Ky 7/25/97
I think that’s all of them.

OK, on to this one. I happened to have a DAT clone of the soundboard of this show (not from Neil) so I figured that I would synch it up with one of the angles. Turned out alright. I love this era of the 97s, so it was nice to get at least 1 angle out there in good quality. It’s a pretty special show since Jon Rauhouse joined the band on pedal steel for a good portion of the show, playing a bunch of stuff off Too Far to Care 2 weeks before the album was released. Dayum.
I might work to rebalance the audio in sections if someone signs up to align angles for edit- that pedal steel is WAY up in the mix.

Old 97s- Hi Pointe St. Louis Mo 4/5/97 xfer from Hi8 Master tape Enhanced 97’s alt.country americana

This is one of my favorite videos of the Old 97s. I didn’t see this No Drepession Tour (even though I had a ticket) because I was brand new at my job and I didn’t want to screw up. I am still at that employer, so I guess it turned out ok. It was awesome to see a full set from that tour in nice quality. I had posted a 2nd gen VHS of the show years ago, but Neil sent me his masters a while back, so here it is in all of its lossless enhanced glory.
If only the audio was a little better… it’s clear they were LOUD.

Here is the other show from that Old 97s VHS tape- this one RIPS. Man, I love this era of the band and I am so thankful to have seen them so much back then… but this may be my favorite 97s video from the ’90s. The lighting on stage is uneven so I just denoised the pic and left the lighting as is.
Oh, one other thing about the Stubb’s show from yesterday- I mentioned that Ken made mistakes at the beginning of the set. He let us know that he had a new guitar tech- first time out- and they totally screwed up the tuning the guitar. Haha, that must be a nightmare. I experienced that once in person- Girlschool in 2014.

Old 97’s- Stubbs BBQ, Austin Tx 3/14/97 xfer from Hi8 Master Tape sxsw w/Exene Cervenka Old 97s

Today is Mediocre Monday, but no mediocre stuff happening today– I get to see the Old 97s for the first time in over 10 years! I used to follow these guys around California all the time back in the 90s. They are playing a LOT in our area over the next couple weeks. I am hitting 2 of the shows- Chico tonight, Roseville on Wednesday. It should be a good time.

Here is a show recorded by Neil Werries back in 1997. Features Exene Cervenka on 2 songs toward the end. It is a little dark- I probably should have brightened it a bit before denoising. Might be ripe for a re-do.

Old 97s- KCRW Rancho Loco Show, Live in-studio and interview 3/3/96 xfer from master cassette

Here’s a fun one for Mediocre Monday. A very early Old 97s in studio performance on KCRW. I did not tape this off the radio, but I remember giving someone a bunch of good stuff in exchange for the master tape. It was muddy and muffled and I EQ’d it together as best I could. Still a really cool artifact despite the imperfect quality.
