Charm Fueled- Blue Room, Chico 2/25/95 video

Recorded by: James Johnston
Copied from master VHS to DVD in 2007

Patricia Rowland Howard of Vomit Launch and Empty Gate’s mid-90s band, whom really to me sound a bit like 28th Day, Barbara Manning’s old group, at least in parts.

You can see I was in a huge hurry to share these (sarcasm, if it wasn’t obvious). This is a shame, as life is short, and these shouldn’t be sequestered away on some shelf to decompose.

There are four live videos total of this outfit, of which this is the last one chronologically, the first three filmed at Lava Lounge and the last one (this) at Blue Room, ranging from late 1994 to early 1995. This is the easiest watch of these because it’s the best-lit, relatively speaking, though the audio on all these are all very listenable! Setlist, keeping in mind this is *all* unreleased material.

I do know the guitarist / occasional vocalist is named Sean Gowan, who had previously played in The Vertels but don’t know much else beyond that.

Setlist

  • If I Could [0:02]
  • Don’t Count Me Out [3:23]
  • Consume Me [6:37] – Trish mentions her attire, “fashion disaster night”
  • Believe In Sadness [9:52]
  • ? (Slow # w/Sean & Trish vocals) [12:40]
  • Repeat Myself [18:10] – Trish then tosses flyers to the crowd, with a Yes tease then thrown in…
  • You Are The Sugar Ring [22:26]
  • ? (punk cover? f.u. 2-3-4) [26:39]
  • (slide guitar intro) You Gotta Lot Of Nerve [30:05] (brief internal cut at 32m30s)
  • (encore) [35:11]
  • Dumb Fuck [35:32]

There’s a Vertels video recording here, along with a Vomit Launch live performance of “Dog Sauce” from September 1989, recorded by JE: https://www.youtube.com/@chasmonchichi/search?query=Vertels

Vomit Launch- Cattle Club, Sacramento Ca. 10/16/92 xfer from Hi8 Master w/DAT Soundboard Audio!

I moved to L.A. in August of 1992, but happened to be back in Sacramento to visit family for this show.. and I happened to catch Vomit Launch at Cattle. This was the last time I got to see them, and it was the 2nd to last show I filmed at Cattle.

Recorded By: Shayne Stacy

Equipment Used: Sony TR-81 camcorder & TCD-D3 DAT

Edited/Remixed By: Sam Habash

Vomit Launch- Cattle Club, Sacramento Ca. 7/13/91 DAT Master Audio Soundboard Enhanced

Here is another one from DAT#3. 3 down, 1850 to go! I posted this one a couple years ago, but this one sounds much better- it has been rebalanced with izotope.
This is probably my favorite VL show- it captures the Cattle Club vibe perfectly. Drunk Jerry trying to announce the band but no one has their shit together, Trish begging people not to leave, and lots of funny between song banter. It’s a classic in my book.

Recorded/transfer by: Shayne Stacy
Equipment used: Sony TCD-D3 lined into soundboard, Sony PCMR500 and M-Audio Audiophile card for transfer
Rebalance in Izotope: flat Vocal, boost bass, boost drums, boost guitar.

Vomit Launch- Cattle Club, Sacramento 8/25/90 xfer from 8mm master tape complete show Chico

Here’s another old video that I found through the On This Date in History project. I am totally baffled as to why this one wasn’t posted already, or why I didn’t also tape through the soundboard like I did for Monks of Doom, who headlined the show.
This is just a raw transfer- no enhancements- and it could really use some enhancing. Unfortunately with the fractured wrist, getting to that tape right now is not possible. So here it is in all of its dark glory. Maybe I’ll fix it up sometime later…
And Jerry says during intro that it is their first appearance. Maybe their first at Cattle Club, but not their first in the building. They played Club Me back in December of 1988- video also on the archive/channel

Equipment used: Aiwa CV-80 and ECM-909 tie wrapped to the top
Transfer with Sony DCR-TRV340 firewire into Dell workstation

Vomit Launch- Burro Room, Chico Ca. 9/16/89 Enhanced master with Sony D6 Audio!

This was a special show- Vomit Launch doing a headlining set in their hometown, in their prime.
Not only that, but I took my 8mm master video and brightened/denoised it so you can actually see Lindsey play guitar!
and that’s not all… thanks to Sam Habash, we have “Anonymous”‘s EXCELLENT audio courtesy of a Sony D6 & ECM909 mic, synched up to the video. Where else will you find a 75 minute VL set? Nowhere. Nowhere.

Recorded by: Shayne Stacy
Equipment used: Aiwa CV80
Audio: Sony WMD6C & ECM909 mic
Synch: Sam Habash (Thehappyone on youtube)

Vomit Launch- Club Me, Sacramento 12/17/88 Enhanced Master w/improved audio

I heard Vomit Launch for the first time, opening a Stewart Katz show- it may have been a 7 seconds show in late 1986 and I liked them immediately. I think that this was their first Sacramento appearance after I bought my camera- back in the Clint/Jeff O’Toole/Greg Dean promoter gap between Stewart and Brian & Jerry.
I took my master and brightened it and de-noised it, then added “Anonymous”‘s audio, courtesy of an Aiwa handheld recorder with stock mic? Or it may have been a Sony ECM909 at this point. Anyway, it sounded better than my stock mic.

Audio: Anonymous, Aiwa Handheld recorder

Devil in the Woods “Two” Comp Tape w/ Vomit Launch, Downsiders, Bait, Sunbirds, Sinatras master xfer

Here is another tape I picked up recently- this time off Discogs. Mike Cloward(28th Day drummer) has run a great label called Devil in the Woods since 1986 (or earlier). According to Discogs, this is the label’s earliest release… but the full name of the tape is “Devil In The Woods #2: A Selection Of Music From Chico” and the catalog # is DIW4.. so there was probably at least 1 and up to 3 earlier tapes on the label.
Track list is on the cassette J-card. Stand on your head to read the rest of the J-card text. 🙂

Recorded by: Larry Crane and Mike Cloward

Equipment used: Nakamichi 670ZX (sounded better than the Dragon) and M-audio Audiophile 2496 card
