The Verdicts- Los Angeles 10/19/96 xfer from Hi8 Master Tape Steve Rogers Surrogate Brains Cover

I missed yesterday’s post- my flight home was cancelled yesterday, which caused all sorts of work and travel chaos. I made it home last night, on an indirect flight. Air travel is a nightmare right now.
Anyway, here is a fun one- Steve Rogers’ mid-90s band The Verdicts. They even do a Surrogate Brains cover of If The Things They Say Are True (from Surrogate Serenades) at about the 4:00 mark.
If anyone recognizes this venue, please let me know. It’s pretty unique with the stage being small, but with a tall drum riser. I do not recall a venue looking like this when I lived in L.A. in the mid-90s.

Barkmarket- Dragonfly, Los Angeles Ca 10/18/96 xfer from Hi8 master tape Enhanced

Youtube’s automatic thumbnail picking machine must be on the fritz today. The video is quite a bit better than the thumbnail. This is another one from Steve Rogers’ collection of Hi8 videos he shot in the 90s. I am not 100% sure of the year- the tape only said “barkmarket 10/18”. I assume it is 96 since that is when Steve videotaped a bunch of stuff, and 10/18/96 is a weekend day.

Fairport Convention- Palms, Davis Ca. 10/16/96 Xfer from DAT Soundboard Master Tape

This show was such a thrill for me. I have been a huge Fairport fan since the mid-80’s and this was my first time seeing them. The old Palms was truly special- a tiny barn next to a house in Davis. I was able to ask Simon Nicol for permission to record and I was thrilled (and surprised) that he said yes! He just asked that I don’t bootleg it… and of course, there is some jackass on ioffer bootlegging it now. Man I hate bootleggers.

Jimmie Dale Gilmore- Strawberry Festival, Angels Camp Ca 10/4/96 onsite FM Sbd xfer from DAT Clone

Here’s today’s good time listening thing. I think this came from the guy in Auburn whose name I can’t remember. He mastered a bunch of Jam/Folk/Country stuff in the 90s. I never made it to one of the Strawberry fests, but I heard that they supplied a low power on-site FM broadcast so campers could listen from the campsite. Some innovative folks figured out how to power an FM receiver and record the sets.
Good set by JDG, and he wasn’t the most open person about taping so this is a rare treat.

Donovan- Largo, Los Angeles Ca. Mid-1990s xfer from Hi8 Master Enhanced

Here is a nice sounding video from Steve Rogers’ collection master tapes. We think this is Largo from the mid-90s, and it looks like he made a couple of radio appearances in the area that might narrow down the date- either February 1995 or October 1996.
