Movie Stars- Palms, Davis Ca 1/24/91 xfer f/ master cassette Marantz PMD430 Nak CM300 x2 Red Meat

Here’s another post, mourning the Palms’ closure. Actually, I wouldn’t call it mourning. It is more like when you get a call and your great aunt who you were close to but had not seen in 20 years passed away… I absolutely loved the Davis location, but the Winters spot didn’t do it for me. Still, sad to see it go.

Besides the incredible fairport convention soundboard recordings (thanks again Lawrence), this is the best recording I ever made there. In fact, it is probably my best audio recording of The Movie Stars… ever. Their first (only?) time at The Palms, and they played 2 sets that night, so they pulled out songs that they rarely played.

Movie Stars- Record Finder Records, San Francisco Ca 11/4/90 xfer from master Audiocassette Red Meat

About a month ago, Michael Montalto found a bunch of cassettes of the release “Head on a Platter”. I had no idea a cassette release even existed and they are not on discogs. Being a huge fan, I begged him to send me one and he did so- free! Thank you!!
I figured I’d do something to show my appreciation. Here is the very first recording I made on the Marantz PMD430. This was one of the best “portable” analog decks made back in the 80s. It was Marantz’ equivalent to the Sony TCD-D5.
The band set up and played on the sidewalk outside of the record store, busker-style. No amplification at all. It was really fun, with pedestrians walking through the band and audience at times. My mic catches a bit of wind, but when I tried to de-wind the tape, all of the low end drops out. It’s better this way.
This was the precursor to the HOAP record release show at slim’s the next week.

Audio Live Concert

Movie Stars- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic Show, Santa Monica 7/30/90 xfer from 1st gen audio tape

This tape comes from my collection of 4,000 cassettes that need to get done. Myke from KCRW is archiving all of their older shows and found some stuff that the station didn’t have, so my posts will be KCRW heavy in the near future.
Movie Stars were one of my favorite bands in the early 1990s. I would follow them all over the bay/Sacramento area and tape their shows. They needed a fan to photograph shows, too- there are no pictures of the band online. You get the generic HoaP photo for this post. Maybe Linda Champagne has some pics she can share.

Audio Live Performance

Movie Stars- Freight and Salvage, Berkeley Ca 6/30/90 xfer from 8mm master 1st Set

I filmed this one 35 years ago today. I was such a big Movie Stars fan. I would follow them around and video all the concerts I could catch. They played 2 sets on this night. I filmed them both and I have a soundboard tape of the 2nd set. One day, I will do lossless transfers of these 8mm tapes, denoise them and upscale to HD, and possibly synch the board tape. It’s not a great mix so I will need to see if Izotope can help.

Movie Stars- Victoria Theater, San Francisco Ca 4/21/90 xfer from 8mm master tape Red Meat

for On This Date in History, I decided to share yet another one that I filmed a long time ago . Just like the Rhett Miller yesterday, this is a “standard” transfer with the old setup and there is better audio that I can synch eventually. Anonymous was on the floor with his D6/ECM909 setup and I was on the balcony.. and it didn’t sound good up there.
The Movie Stars were a great alt country/americana band from San Francisco. A few members started Red Meat after the band disbanded in the early 90s.

Movie Stars- Starry Plough, Berkeley Ca. 3/30/90 Part 1. Direct xfer from master tape!

My favorite movie stars shows were the ones where they played 2 sets in a night, because they would pull out some killer covers along with deep cuts of their own excellent material. Combine that with one of the greatest venues in California, and you have this- one of my favorite shows of theirs.Around 2 hours of fun! Recorded with the old Aiwa CV80 and a Sony ECM909 velcro’d to the top.

Movie Stars- Cattle Club, Sacramento Ca. 11/19/89 xfer from master tape! Red Meat

This was the first time I saw The Movie Stars, and I became a huge fan right away. They were alt-country/bluegrass before it was popular again. Members: Jill Olson- Bass/vocals; Steve Cornell- Guitar/vocals; Michael Montalto- Guitar; Brad- Accordion. Many members of this band went on to form popular bay area Alt-country band Red Meat.
