Slayer- Rio Theatre, Valley Stream NY 10/31/84 xfer from master audio cassette thrash metal

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! OK, I just made that up but it does have a nice ring to it.
This one was a tough one to prep. I was able to get most of the distortion out of the source by dropping the mids/highs, but doing that buried Tom’s vocals in the mix. I went to the old standby Izotope Rx8 to bring up vocals, and the bass a bit.

Overkill- Rio Theater, Valley Stream NY 10/31/84 xfer from master audio cassette speed thrash metal

Late one today- work was intense. Another one from Doug’s collection- Overkill (opening for Slayer) at a venue I have never heard of before. I searched it up on setlist dot fm and it seems like it did a few shows 40 years ago and that was about it.
This one sounds pretty decent- it was clean enough to push the EQ and no big distortion issues, just a little high end crispiness. Thanks Doug!

Slayer- Larry’s Hideaway, Toronto Canada 10/27/84 xfer from master tape Thrash Metal

It’s not a week unless we post a Slayer show from Doug. I found this gem of a picture while I was checking online for a photo or flyer from the show- that’s Doug behind Kerry, holding the Sony Walkman WM-R2. That’s a pretty cool find- thanks to the photographer Ihor Hirak for capturing not only Slayer, but Doug and the recorder.
I am currently digitizing the rest of the sets from this canada run- including opening bands- some great stuff upcoming.

Verbal Abuse- Wellingtons, Winnipeg Canada 10/24/84 xfer from master audio cassette

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! This recording was well-circulated among traders in the 80s. It was so clean, it was listed as a soundboard tape even though it is a Doug audience recording. It’s nice to make a clean transfer of the source tape to EQ it- it sounds pretty good.
Doug also sent across a few pages of photos from that 2 night stand in Winnipeg. Wellingtons was a hotel and performance venue, and the band was well cared for. In fact, the liner notes of Hell Awaits makes reference to “MAROUSHKA LIVES IN OUR BRAINS!” — Maroushka worked at the Wellington Hotel, the club was in the basement. There’s your Slayer trivia for the day. Pay attention, there will be a test.

Slayer- Wellington’s, Winnipeg Canada 10/23/84 xfer f/ master audio cassette rebalanced Thrash Metal

Another Doug tape today- a Slayer show to honor Jeff on the date of his passing. Hard to believe it has been 11 years already. I think that Jeff even yells to Doug for a drink at about the 13:30 mark on this recording. It’s one of the band asking…
The Verbal Abuse Welington’s opening set was well-circulated in trading circles in the 80s, but I was not aware that they were opening for Slayer. These recordings are so clean that the Verbal Abuse was misrepresented as a board tape back then. Hopefully the EQ and rebalance will help these recordings out a bit- I like how it sounds.

Slayer- Keystone, Palo Alto Ca 10/15/84 xfer from master audio cassette thrash metal

It’s Wednesday and there have been no Doug posts yet this week- let’s fix that. This Slayer show goes to prove that even the greats play to an empty room sometimes. I am sure that it being a Monday night in Palo Alto didn’t help things much. Sounds like there are less than 100 people there. They still mowed through the set as usual, but damn. Tough crowd.
Thanks to Wayne Vanderkuil for finding this pink sheets listing for the show, no flyer seems to exist. Maybe THAT’s why nobody showed up…

Slayer- Hell Awaits Rough Mixes 1984 xfer from band audio cassette copy Thrash Metal

More awesome stuff from Doug. The one thing that pops to mind about this one is when we talked to Tom about the recording of this album while hanging backstage in 1985-86 time frame. He was poking fun at the low-budget recording techniques and he mentioned that he recorded the vocals for this album in a bathroom. Listening to the vocals here (which sound pretty different to me) reminds me of that conversation.
