Corrosion of Conformity- The Stone, San Francisco Ca 1/28/86 xfer from low gen audio tape COC C.O.C.

For today’s “on this day in history” post, I pulled this random C.O.C. show because it wasn’t on youtube, or anywhere online. There isn’t even a flyer or listing in newspapers.com… I hope the date/venue info is correct.
I expected it to be hot garbage but it doesn’t sound too bad. In fact, it sounds like it might be one of Mark Martin’s original master tapes- he was taping at around that time and it has that distinctive “cheap panasonic recorder” sound. Haha. Hopefully Mark can confirm or deny.
I think it’s pretty cool that the band played the punk house/venue (New Method in Emeryville) a couple days before, then crossed the bridge and played the big SF show.

Victims Family- New Method, Emeryville Ca 1/26/86 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette

Oh crap. 10:30pm- it’s been a while since I posted this late, but I am keeping the “one post a day” streak alive for 2023.
This was on the same tape as the COC set, and it is just as important to some people. This is the earliest known live recording of the band. It doesn’t sound perfect, but it is really cool to hear all of those old Voltage and Violets songs played in a punk squat warehouse, opening for COC. Now if we can just find the Sacrilege set…

Corrosion of Conformity- New Method, Emeryville Ca 1/26/86 from 1st gen tape COC C.O.C. Crossover

Ryan Nero (from Violent Coercion and more) mailed a cassette to me this week with this show on there. I had no idea that out of town bands the caliber of C.O.C. ever played the warehouse. So cool. Ryan even shared a scan of Strephon Taylor’s original “cut and paste” flyer made for the show. Wow! C.O.C. played a bigger show at the Stone in SF a couple days later.
This is a typical early punk rock recording. I was able to EQ a decent amount of distortion out of the tape, but still SO COOL to get this historical document digitized. Thanks Ryan!

Dark Angel- That’s Entertainment Las Vegas Nv 1/25/86 Xfer from VHS Tape Enhanced Thrash Metal

Last week, on my way home from Long Beach, we swung by Todd Nakamine’s house and picked up a few bins full of VHS tapes. What a treasure trove of stuff this is! Here is the first of many from Todd’s collection- a full set from Dark Angel back in 1986. This video is on YT but not in this quality. Xferred from an unknown (but relatively low) gen VHS tape. Thanks Todd!

Attitude Adjustment- Rock on Broadway, San Francisco Ca 1/25/86 xfer from master audio cassette

Early post today. Yet another Attitude Adjustment show- so glad Wayne was able to document all of these shows before I even knew who the band was. I got clued in about mid-1986 and was a huge fan ever since, even bringing Condemned Attitude to Sacramento twice in 1987.
This recording is pretty listenable for a ROB tape- that venue had some rough acoustics.

The Dickies- Hollywood Palladium 1/17/86 xfer from 2nd gen soundboard cassette Punk

I put way too much work into today’s “on this day in history” post. The mix on this was pretty terrible, it lacked high end, and the volume goes from 5 to 10 for the last couple tracks.
Here’s what I did:

  • EQ in sony sound forge 10 to bring up the high end.. which also brings up the tape hiss, and normalize to 0.
  • Rebalance in Izotope to get some guitar and bass in the mix… but not too much as this is one of those tapes where the soundman pushed the guitar up during the leads.
  • discover that the first rebalance job blew the levels to peak at +4db for those last 2 songs, overblowing them.
  • tear down and start steps over again with lower levels
  • Normalize/vol boost everything except for last couple songs to make it even throughout.
Was it worth it? Probably not, but I love the Dickies and I didn’t see this one out there on youtube. Before anyone asks, I have not seen the Toy Dolls set around from this night.
