Slayer- Arco Arena, Sacramento Ca 1/22/95 xfer from 8mm master tape Thrash Metal Enhanced version

I never realized that Slayer headlined Arco. I lived in L.A. at the time and this totally passed me by. That kinda blows me away, never thought they were that huge in the mid 90s.
This is another one filmed by Gary Shurtleff- owner of the “bootleg cowboys” youtube channel. This one is already posted over there, but I denoised that 8mm grain out of it to post here… and he gave me the OK to post the sacramento stuff I transferred for him!

Here is what Gary had to say about the show:

I consider myself to be one of the lucky few who got to film Slayer with permission. Tom was interviewed for a video zine I was working with before the gig and after the interview we asked him if we could film the set. Tom said- Yeah sure, don’t release the whole show though. After 25 years sitting in the vault. Felt now is the time to finally share this RARE one with you thrashers!!

I firmly believe if they adopted a “taping policy” similar to Metallica. They could have reached an even bigger audience within the taping circles world wide.

My only gripe, is when zooming in, the focus is not sharp like it should be. Looking through these small view finders, sometimes one cannot tell if the sharpness is where it’s suppose to be. Anyways, enough of my rambling…..

Another side note – If you have ever seen the Serenity in Murder CD single cover, there is a fan who carved the SLAYER logo into his back with a knife and blood dripping down from the letters. That fan was from the Sacramento area and at this show. Which is where he showed Kerry, he thought it was insane but of course had to take a picture. So think of Sacramento 95 when you see the image.

Willie Nelson- King Center for the Performing Arts, Melbourne FL 1/19/95 xfer from DAT Sbd Clone

Here’s another nice quality soundboard clone, courtesy of a trade with Damon Bramblett back in the 90s. It sounds like it cuts in mid-set, and the length of the show is a bit shorter than what was typical for the time. So, assume that this show is incomplete.
Man, it must be a pretty sweet deal to play the performing arts centers and casinos around the country. Good for Willie.

Willie Nelson- Kennedy Center, Washington DC January 1995 Clone of DAT Soundboard Complete Show

I caught up with a trading friend from the ’90s. Damon Bramblett was the man with the Johnny Cash audience recordings and these- a treasure trove of Willie Nelson DAT soundboards. He was friends with someone close to Willie, possibly his soundman.. and he has a ton of these recordings. I got about 8? DATs full of them, but that was about it. Damon asked me to digitize some of my copies of the tapes for him, this is the first one.
It sounds pretty nice except for a burst of digi-noise at about the 41:00 mark… thanks to these cheap DATs.
Let me tell you a little about DATs back then- they were expensive. The audio ones cost about $9 each ($5-6 in bulk), but you could find DDS (digital data storage) tapes that would work as audio tapes for WAY cheaper($3). The absolute cheapest/crappiest tapes were DICs. It was common to try to play back a DIC and have problems- to this day, I call them f*cking DICs.

Butch Hancock- Sesto Calendre, Monria Italy 1/13/95 xfer from DAT Clone Soundboard On this Day

As promised in my facebook post yesterday, here is the first of TWO daily posts. I will be posting an “on this day in history” daily for the next year, at least. The archive has focused mainly on punk/metal/alternative, but there is a ton of other stuff here including folk/county/americana.
I traded for this one from a guy in Italy (sorry, I don’t remember his name, I should have kept my traders’ tape lists) back in the mid 90s and it sounded fantastic. For those folks who don’t know what a DAT is- they were Digital Audio Tapes. These were the highest quality and most compact way to trade music before CDR’s took over. It was the original digital listening platform, albeit expensive and used by tapers & audio enthusiasts. Anyway, I was enjoying this Hancock quite a bit while transferring it, and then the dreaded DAT diginoise hits at about 70 minutes in. If you have never heard it, it’s super annoying- staticky robot fart sounding.
I was going to ditch this one and find another tape to post for this date, but I realized that this proved my point- that we need to get this stuff digitzed ASAP. These DATs are 30-35 years old and cassettes can be 40 years old at this point. Hopefully I can do this full-time someday soon and really speed things up!

Actionslacks- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 1/13/95 xfer from pre-fm master cassette tape

Last week, I mentioned that I would be posting some lesser-known bands from the KALX live in studio archive. Here is one of them- Actionslacks. It looks like they had a pretty good run with at least 11 releases between 1995 and 2010. They had a couple of releases on the Arena Rock label, who also had Harvey Danger at around the same time in the late 90s.
They even had my friend and talented bass player/lawyer/photographer Aaron Rubin in the band for a stretch. Cool.
Anyway, enjoy and thanks Rick for recording all of this!

Red Krayola- Ciceros, St. Louis Mo 1/11/95 xfer from DAT Master Clone Soundboard Rebalanced Mayo T

Here’s something completely different to kick off your Monday. This one is from Jim Utz’ collection. Jim and I started trading tapes in 1986 have have remained good friends to this day. When I bought my DAT in 1991 and started recording some pretty nice board tapes, Jim invested in one as well and started taping around the St. Louis area. His home base was Cicero’s basement bar and he even released an official CD with songs from some of these recordings, called “The Basement Recordings – Live At Cicero’s”. It’s out of print, but there are copies available for $8 on discogs. Thanks Jim!
Anyway, the Red Krayola Wiki asked for this one to be digitized a while back and this flyer comes from their database of stuff.

Slayer- Divine Intourvention Tour Rehearsals, Orange Pavillion, San Bernardino 1/11/95 Hi8 master xf

Here is one of the mind-blowing videos from Steve Rogers’ collection of masters. Being an American Recordings employee allowed him access to artists that us ordinary mortals don’t have. Here is Slayer, preparing for tour the day before the Divine Intourvention kicked off in Del Mar.
Audio is a bit distorted but I think that deserves a pass, given the uniqueness of this one.

Wives- WFMU Live in Studio, E Orange NJ 1/9/95 xfer from low gen audio cassette Go-Kart CBGB Records

Collections post time, this one is from Jason Ross’ collection.

Man, there are a lot of bands who called themselves some variation of “Wives”. This is the band with Mary Dunham, Susan Horwitz, and Tracy Almazan and had releases on Go-Kart and CBGB records.

Jason usually got his WFMU tapes from a guy who taped them off the radio, but this one has a little hum in the background, and it isn’t Pat Duncan’s show. Might have been taped by someone else. Still sounds good.

The Bottle Rockets- World Cafe, Philadelphia Pa 1/7/95 xfer f/DAT Clone FM Alt Country Americana

Today’s On This Date in History comes from Festus, Mo’s Bottle Rockets. This is pretty cool- kinda surprising that they played the show since they were on an indie label at the time. The interviewer does a nice job despite not knowing much about the band.

The Rip Offs- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 1/6/95 xfer from master cassette tape Punk Garage

It’s KALX tape archive time! You can expect a couple audio posts from Wayne V and Rick Sylvain’s collections for the next year or so, with some other surprise stuff thrown in along the way.
This one is really cool- there is not much Rip Offs stuff recorded from back then. If you are friends with Jon Von or any of the band, please tag them.
