Meat Puppets- Harlow’s, Sacramento Ca. 7/28/15 4 Camera Multicam

I had not seen the Meat Puppets in over 20 years, and I had not been keeping up on the recent live shows so I did not know what to expect. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. What a show! I heard from someone after that there was some tour frustration and that anger came out in the show.. Maybe someone should piss Curt off more often. 🙂 . Filmed with 1 HFG30, 2 HFG10, and 1 HFM500, Edited by Jim McLain- thanks! Thanks to Brian McKenna and Abstract Entertainment for bringing bands like this to town.

Meat Puppets- KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas, Universal Amp, Universal City 12/10/94 xfer f/DAT FM Master

I realized that some of the Acoustic Xmas sets from 1994 are not online. I taped the entire thing (interviews, commercials and all) with the DAT when I lived in Whittier for a few years.

Here is a fantastic Meat Puppets set. I love that they didn’t go up and play the hits. They did play the 2 songs that Nirvana did on the unplugged set, but they also did Pee Pee the Sailor (Paul Leary/Butthole Surfers) and Sloop John B (Beach Boys). One of the more memorable sets from 94, for sure.

Speaking of the 94 Almost Acoustic Xmas, Patreon voters are voting for another set to be shared next week. If you want in on the fun, link to sign up is below as well.

Meat Puppets- World Beat Center, San Diego Ca 5/21/94 xfer from hi8 Master Tape Live Dez Cadena

So this one has a bit of a story. My good friend Kirk Nelson (now known as captain fireball on DIME and such) came down to hang out in L.A. for a few days and catch some Meat Puppets shows. The first night was them opening for Stone Temple Pilots at Fairfax High, which was really cool to see. I’ll post video of that sometime soon.
The next night was this show. World Beat Center was this odd, all-ages venue that looked like some kind of art school/collective. I saw 2 shows there- this one and FEAR- and it had this unusual vibe for a punk venue. Not bad, just different. Maybe the puppets felt it too (or were feeling something else), because this is the most insane MP show I have ever witnessed.
First, they play a pretty long main set. Then, they came back for an encore which was a 10 minute noise jam with Dez Cadena and others. They even sound like they play a few bars of “Damaged” there for a bit. Everyone is switching instruments and it is pure insanity. Unfortunately, the show sounds like garbage. Kirk would usually audiotape with his DAT and I would video. He was plugged in, but something went wrong and there was no audio signal through the soundboard. This camera audio is the only audio that survived.

Meat Puppets- Palace, Hollywood Ca 9/26/93 xfer from DAT Soundboard Master Rock for Choice benefit

I was surprised to see that this one wasn’t up on Youtube for LMA. Then I played it and realized why… the mix was not great- almost no guitar. this whole night was kind of a mess. There were about 10 tapers up at the board and we tried to do a live matrix of Mudhoney. We did not take into account the delay between stage volume and board feed and the Mudhoney matrix is a mashup of board mix and half second delayed audience. At least this one is clear, with not enough guitar.

Why didn’t I tape the others? No idea.

Meat Puppets- Palomino, Hollywood Ca 4/17/93 DAT Soundboard Master Rebalanced Live full show

There was a short time in the 1993-1994 time frame when the legendary Palomino Club in N. Hollywood booked some notable alternative bands. I saw the Meat Puppets and Uncle Tupelo there a couple of months apart in 1993. It was really cool to see all of the amazing photos on the walls of the artists who played there. I should have taken video of that, but I chickened out.
This is another nice mix by Davo Claasen- great soundman and nice guy. This one was a little light on guitar, but the rest of the mix was solid. I popped it in Izotope and boosted the guitar +7. I was one of about 10 decks recording this show- just another Meat Puppets show in L.A.

Meat Puppets- McCabes Guitar Shop, Santa Monica Ca. 10/3/92 Xfer from DAT Soundboard Master

There was a window of about 10 months between moving to L.A. in 8/92 and my first child being born. I went to a lot of shows in that time- Midwest to see Uncle Tupelo 5 times, Uncle Tupelo again in Socal in Feb of 93, and a ton of local shows. I think this was the first time I went to McCabes. Davo (MP Soundman) did a great job with the mix- the room is small and they were a bit loud if I remember correctly.

Meat Puppets- McCabes Guitar Shop, Santa Monica 10/3/92 Early xfer from Hi8 Video w/Enhance Sbd

Man, this was a lot of work to prepare but totally worth it. I am really happy with the end result. I should have boosted the audio a little more, otherwise all good.
btw, there are at least 20 (and maybe up to 100) OLD 1988-2000ish videos where I can give the same treatment (enhance video, remix audio, synch new audio track to video)
I had moved down to L.A. (Whittier) about 2 months before this. This was the first time I was at Mccabes I think.
