Primatives- Mississippi Nights St. Louis Mo 7/28/86 Pre Uncle Tupelo Proshot Live Jeff Tweedy Farrar

I was surprised to see that this is not up on youtube… at least I couldn’t find it. When I filmed Uncle Tupelo’s last show ever at Mississippi Nights, I met a nice couple (Tom and Mary I think?). They are relatives of Mike Heidorn and they asked for my contact info. I ended up sending them a VHS copy of the last show, since Mike played during the encore… and I thought that was the end of it. Then, out of nowhere, they sent me this box of old UT articles and stuff… and in the box was this VHS tape of the Primatives playing on St. Louis Cable- KDHX.
The Primatives(that is really how they spelled it) were Jeff/Jay/Mike, with Jay’s brother Wade Farrar on lead vocals. They do a lot of early/garage rock type covers, but the first one is an original and fans may recognize it.
Oh, this is probably a 1st gen VHS tape transfer. I think they recorded it off cable.

Setlist (courtesy of factorybelt.net site w/1 small correction): Smoking Gun/ I’m Talking About You/ Diddy Wah Diddy/ Dirty Water/ Primitive/ No Different/ instrumental/ Surprise Surprise/ I Just Want to Make Love To You/ ?/ Gloria/ Psycho/ I’m So Glad

7 Seconds- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 7/27/86 xfer from low gen soundboard cassette tape rebalanced

I have a confession- I don’t listen to 100% of every show I post. It depends on how busy I am and how good the performance is. I rarely have the time to listen to an entire show… but this one was different. I love this era of 7 Seconds- New Wind had just come out (sounds like it was in transit to record stores at the time) and the band played a bunch of new material from it. Great stuff- I’ve listened to it twice so far.
The board mix was light on guitar, so I rebalanced it a bit with Izotope, and the tape was clean enough for the rebalance to work. The mix fluctuates for the first 5-10min, then locks in for the rest of the set.
Huge thanks to James R Edmonds for sending this one to be digitized. I think he has one other Farm sbd from 1985 that I am dying to hear as well.

Adolescents- Rock on Broadway, San Francisco Ca 7/19/86 xfer master audio cassette with Discontent?

It’s always a bummer when a band has an off night. This Adolescents show was plagued with an endless series of sound and technical issues. First, there were sound problems. Then an amp blew or something. The odd thing is that there is a metal band that plays at about the 28:00 mark, then more Adolescents after the tape flip. Wayne said the most metal band on the bill was Discontent, so it may be them.
Wayne emailed me a more accurate flyer for the show, but I either forgot to use it or it came after I created this. Sorry.

Sentinel Beast- El Dorado Saloon, Sacramento Ca. 7/13/86 Record Release Show xfer from Beta Master

Here’s the Sentinel Beast set from their record release show. Great filming, great sound (for the time) and nice camerawork. 75 minute set- the longest set I have on record by them. SO happy to help unearth this one!

Recorded by: Boston Marc
Equipment Used: Old beta camcorder

Here’s the backstory on the whole thing:
So I am probably going to go on forever about this one. I knew of a guy who filmed concerts in Sacramento back in the mid-80s. In fact, I gave him $20 to film my old punk band in 1987. I have been searching for this guy for YEARS. I was happy to reconnect with my old friend Jeff Maxwell a while back, and he remembered him but only had a first name- Mark.
So I was hanging out with Mike Parisi and I mentioned my search for 80s video guy, and he connected me to Mark Horner(formerly “mark the dark” of Arson), who told me he knew the guy! He gave me his name and number and I “cold called” him. It turns out that he has been wanting to get his videos on the internet, and Sac Music Archive sounded like a great place to do it! Thanks to everyone for making the connection happen!
So we hit a snag- he could not find the tapes. He finally found 1 of the tapes- a 30 year old BETA (not VHS) tape that was recorded in EP mode… and it looks AMAZING considering the age and equipment back then. WOW! Thanks Marc for filming and for loaning this to me. More to come.

Critical Mass- El Dorado Saloon, Sacramento Ca. 7/13/86 xfer from Beta Master tape

Here is an awesome time capsule from the 80s. Look at the crowd- heavy metal parking lot reincarnate! Observe the gaudy neon decor inside the el dorado.

Critical Mass was a thrash band from sac in the mid-80s. Vince played guitar (he’s the only guy I knew) and I was told that Mike Farrell played the guitar as well, but that doesn’t look like him.

Also includes a backstage cameo of Barry Fischel, warming up for the show.

The Pandoras- Adams Ave Theater, San Diego Ca 7/11/86 xfer from 2nd gen VHS tape Kim Shattuck Muffs

When I was digitizing all of Eddie and John’s VHS tapes, I had some space on the hard drive so I went and pulled a random, uncirculated VHS tape from the collection. This one isn’t great quality (and filmed WAY BACK THERE with some good zoom action), but given that it was filmed before camcorders were commonplace, I felt it was worthy of a post.

Features one of the greatest musicians/people ever, Kim Shattuck on bass.
