Yo La Tengo- Rhino Records, Westwood Ca 8/30/90 xfer f/4th gen audio cassette

this bonus post is from my collection for my long-time friend Pete Markall. Pete would hang out and go to shows with me in the 1990s when I lived in southern cal. Pete is recuperating from some medical stuff and asked for this one, so everyone gets it.

This set starts as a standard YLT acoustic show from that time frame and then gets loud about 40 minutes in, starting with “Emulsified”. The recording isn’t a professional walkman type of thing, but it doesn’t distort too bad- it’s enjoyable.

Jawbreaker- Reckless Records, Chicago Il. 8/29/90 xfer from low gen audiotape East Bay Punk

Here is another one requested by Todd Pritchard, from Jason Ross’ collection of tapes. There is a video of this show on youtube with fair quality/distorted audio. This one appears to be from a different source- possibly a pro walkman. Sounds like a Sony D3 or D6 to me.

Jawbreaker- Lounge Ax, Chicago Il. 8/28/90 xfer from unknown gen VHS tape East Bay Punk

Here is yet another Jawbreaker show from Jason Ross’ collection, that was digitized for the Turn it Around documentary many years ago. There is another version of this show on Youtube, but it is much shorter- it is less than half of the total time of this one. I think their quality is better- this one is pretty generated.

no enhancements. Can’t fix a video this degraded.

Monks of Doom- Cattle Club, Sacramento 8/25/90 Part 1 (only for now)

So I always have an endless backlog of video & audio stuff to do for people (so if you are waiting, sorry, I will get to it). Right now, I am giving the Camper Van Beethoven documentary guys about 50 videos. They asked for some Cattle Club stuff that I had not seen in a while. Check out how great this clip is- and look what can happen when you turn the lights all the way up in that place! Seriously, great stuff. This was my favorite era of theirs.

Vomit Launch- Cattle Club, Sacramento 8/25/90 xfer from 8mm master tape complete show Chico

Here’s another old video that I found through the On This Date in History project. I am totally baffled as to why this one wasn’t posted already, or why I didn’t also tape through the soundboard like I did for Monks of Doom, who headlined the show.
This is just a raw transfer- no enhancements- and it could really use some enhancing. Unfortunately with the fractured wrist, getting to that tape right now is not possible. So here it is in all of its dark glory. Maybe I’ll fix it up sometime later…
And Jerry says during intro that it is their first appearance. Maybe their first at Cattle Club, but not their first in the building. They played Club Me back in December of 1988- video also on the archive/channel

Monks of Doom- Kennel Club, San Francisco Ca. 7/25/90 xfer from 8mm master enhanced

The kennel had those psychedelic light show guys at a lot of their shows in 1990. It’s cool to see, but it makes the stage darker. I was finally able to enhance this one so it is a bit more watchable. Greg was super dark before.

Enhanced with Adobe Premiere (Exposure/brightness) and denoised with neat video.

Monks of Doom- Cattle Club, Sacramento Ca. 8/25/90 xfer from master tape enhanced

btw, you can thank(or send hate mail to) Jim Rivas for all of these July/August 1990 posts. He asked for Rosebuds from Candlerock, and since I was poor back then I always used every inch of every tape. All of these videos were split across the rosebuds tape, or from another tape related to the rosebuds tape. Make sense? Well, it did to me.

Anyway, here is yet another Monks of Doom show. Man, they were prolific in SF/Sac in 1990. This one sounds pretty damned good for being shot from the stage at Cattle. This video was previously so dark it was unwatchable, it has now been brightened/denoised and came out pretty nice.

Verbal Abuse- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 8/24/90 xfer from low gen soundboard tape

I was digging through boxes of tapes that a friend sent over to me and this one jumped out as one that needed to be digitized. I was shocked that Verbal Abuse- the drunkest band in the bay area at the time, were playing at (no drugs, no alcohol) Gilman. After digging into the history a bit, it looks like they were a (very) last minute replacement for Negazione– if you look at the flyers from this date, there is no mention of VA and Negazione is shown. Scotty even pokes fun at the situation, pretending to be the band from Italy.

Sex pistols cover at 8:00. This set kicks ass and is a must listen for the stage banter alone. Verbal Abuse and Gilman go together like oil and water. haha!

The mix was a bit light on guitar and bass, so I popped it into Izotope and boosted guitar and bass a lot, and drums a little.
