Valerie June- The Sofia, Sacramento Ca 8/20/24 Master Schoeps Recording

It’s another late post. I hope that folks still pay attention to this one because it is a GREAT recording. Also, there was nothing from the Sofia on the archive. Kinda surprising.

Anyway, anonymous hit up the Valerie June show back in 2024 there. She is an amazing performer- I actually recorded one of her sets at Harlows for Anonymous since he was out of town. Didn’t sound this good though.

Yea-Ming and the Rumours Charles Albright Fest, Phono Select Sacramento 8/17/24 Multicam Multitrack

Big thanks to Jeffrey Melendez for not only mixing the multitrack audio for all of these sets, but also for reminding me that I had this one stuck in drafts for 2 months! There is 1 more set to go, I think, and then we are done with the Albright fest.

This was one of the only out-of-town bands to play the fest. Nice indie pop band.

The Frenchmen- Charles Albright Fest Phono Select Records Sacramento Ca 8/17/24 HD Multicam w/Matrix

What a day. After a refreshing 3 hour and 50 minute sleep last night, it has been nonstop today. It was worth it to see that Uli show. It was amazing.

I am staying in with my son tonight and seriously bummed to be missing the Rocketship reunion show w/Molina and this band. At least there is this 17 minute video to enjoy. You should check this out and then get to the Starlet Room in time to see The Frenchmen’s set. You’ll know most of the set!

Monster Treasure- Charles Albright Fest, Phono Select, Sacramento 8/17/24 Multicam Multitrack Audio

Alright, it’s another one from the Charles Albright Festival! This is probably my favorite band that played that day, but I really liked them all. I was bummed to miss it.
My daughter had a soccer tournament that day so I dropped one of my consumer camcorders and 3 gopros at Phono Select to video the bands that day. Christine Shelley’s dad video’d the main angle. Unfortunately, the entire set was not filmed from the main angle so you get mostly gopro action here. Sound great though.

Knock Knock- Charles Albright Fest Sacramento Ca 8/17/24 Multicam w/Multitrack Audio Bananas nokilli

We are just about done with the Charles Albright fest sets- we have 2 more multicams ready to go, and then some incomplete fragments of sets without multitrack audio.. yet. Thanks to Jeff Melendez for his work on the multitrack mix, and as always ⁨@PunksNotDeadGR⁩ for the edits, especially of bands he doesn’t know anything about!

Members are a fine cross-section of Sacramento Rock and Roll, with people from just about every band in town. Including but not limited to Horny Mormons, Lil Bunnies, No Kill I, The Bananas, The Coz, The Globs From Outer Space, and Blizzard of Al.

Reno Casinos- Charles Albright Fest, Phono Select, Sacramento 8/17/24 Multicam w/Multitrack Audio V2

I was planning on posting something else today, but I hate the audio enough for a re-do. Here is one that we had posted a few months ago and the audio was out of synch. This is the corrected version. Speaking of this, we need to get back on editing these ones together. There are more sets from this fest to do.

Reno Casinos played the Charles Albright fest last year. My cameras were there, but I wasn’t. Unfortunately, the main angle was not available for most of the set so you mostly see the 3 gopro angles. It sounds great, thanks to Jeffrey Melendez’ multitrack audio recording of the show.

I don’t know a whole lot about this band- I do see 1 member of the Four Eyes in the and my old friend Jaz Brown on drums. They put out a couple of small CDR/Lathe Cut releases on Secret Center in the early 2020’s.

The Four Eyes-Charles Albright Fest, Phono Select Sacramento Ca 8/17/24 HD Master w/Multitrack Audio

Alright, this is going to be a long story I think.
Charles contacted me and asked if I could video this fest last year. I had a family conflict, but I brought one of my older handheld cameras and the 3 gopros with the extended batteries so he could have it filmed.
Well, unfortunately, the 3 gopros got everything up to the set right before this one and then died. This is a one camera hand held job done by someone in Charles’ family. On the bright side, it sounds great! Jeff Melendez recorded multitrack audio of the entire day- he is just starting to mix them down, so I will have the other sets edited as the audio comes along. More to come.

Short Dogs Grow- Kilowatt, San Francisco Ca 8/10/24 4K UHD Multicam w/ Schoeps Audio

Yep, that title is right- NOT A TYPO. Short Dogs Grow are back! They played their first show in over 10 years (and their 2nd show in over 30, I think) last month at the Kilowatt. They were one of my favorite bands in the late 80s/early 90s, so I wasn’t missing this one!
Of course, any time that I go to a new venue to do multicam video, things inevitably go wrong.. and boy did they. First of all, there is NO parking in this part of SF. After cruising block after block of no parking, I absent-mindedly scooted over to make a right hand turn, and almost hit a bicyclist! I got a nice long middle finger for that one.
Then, once I got into the venue, I realized I forgot the USB drive for the soundboard recording to mix with the schoeps. Hell if I was driving again, so I started a madcap trip to Walgreens with ubers and lyfts and stuff… and then, after all that, the board didn’t work it out. D’oh!
At least the camera angles worked out OK- when there are only 4, it makes a difference if one bonks out. Sounds ok, could have been better. It sounds like they are open to playing more shows, so I might try again if they play somewhere where I can park without killing someone.
The set was great- they even have a couple of new songs!

Jackson Saints- Kilowatt, San Francisco 8/10/24 4K UHD Multicam with Schoeps Audio

As an extra bonus, the legendary Jackson Saints also played the Kilowatt show with Short Dogs Grow. Since I already had all the cameras set up, I figured I would video this set as well. Thanks to Janis for permission.
The band was active back in the early 90s and it seems that most if not all of the original members played the reunion show- correct me if I am wrong. It was pretty tough to figure out because I don’t see any recorded output on discogs and I am going from old band photos to figure it out. Janis, the Meade brothers (Erik & Kevin) seem to be there.
If you can tag/inform band members, I would appreciate it.

Here is the lineup for the show: Chuck Davis-vocals Janis Tanaka- bass Erik Meade- guitar Kevin Meade- guitar JT John- drums
