Back to work today after a week’s vacation and I managed to pick up Covid. So, today has been a swirl of prepping for a big presentation (must go on, covid or not) and trying to catch up on a week’s worth of backlog. That’s why this is later than usual today.
Let’s do another Eggplant tape today. This Blatz tape was almost ALL bass and drums with buried vocals, but Izotope worked pretty well fixing it up. Speaking of Eggplant, I have 2 shows of his that I need to repost- Bomb (remix) and Beatnigs (complete). Maybe I will do those as bonus posts this week.

This is one of the only videos (if not the only video) I shot at Guild. I moved to L.A. when the good shows were happening. After Dark Club had Greg Johnson on bass, I think that might be Shane on vocals, and I think Guy played with them too. Hell, I can’t remember. Can anyone help out? Filmed with the Aiwa CV-80 and Sony ECM-909 mic

Another tape from Eggplant’s collection today. Here is a snippet from a band called 100 Men- a skinhead reggae band from the UK- at Gilman. I don’t think there was a date on the tape so I used Steve List’s handy online search to see when they played there. Thanks to Ken Doose for the heads up that this search existed.
Pretty nice recording and the band seems to have a small following, even today. They put out 3 cassettes and 2 7″ that are still sought after, despite no new releases since 1994.

Here’s the first Sacto Active Rock episode with It’s not what you think. I remember seeing them once or twice @ cattle club. I am not fb friends with any of the members, so please let Peter Keyes, John Taylor and Chris Woodhouse know that this is up, if you think they’ll like it. Please subscribe to my channel if you want updates of new video postings.
Let’s go back to the first time that I saw (and taped) the Pixies. Man, I used to love that band. Then I thought they were alright until they did Kim Shattuck dirty and then they were dead to me. Haha.
I could never sneak gear into the Warfield. I hated that goddamn place. I was so paranoid that I borrowed Anonymous’ smaller Aiwa rather than take the Sony D6 pro walkman that I had. Or maybe the D6 was in the shop, where it resided for about half its life…
Anyway, got the show recorded and as with most Aiwa tapes, it was clear but a bit thin. It EQ’d pretty well though. Not bad at all.

For today’s collection post, I pulled one from @bootlegcowboys collection to share. This is the opener for that AC/DC show I shared last month. I guess they decided to go with a “slash in band names” themed tour. Haha.

I wasn’t planning on posting this one until next weekend, but I forgot to upload my planned post and I have things to do. Also, AC/DC is playing out west for the first time in years next weekend, so this is a good way to prepare.
Gary Shurtleff came by last weekend and dropped about 100 master videotapes with me to digitize. He shot this from the back of Arco Arena in the front row of the upper deck. No obstructions! I still marvel at the fact that he could cram that huge camcorder down his pants and then film the entire show without being caught.

I forgot I had this one. It was one of those late era audio cassette trades, after I traded DAT only with rare exception. A live lush KCRW session is definitely a good reason for an old school tape trade. Unfortunately, the interview with Deirdre O’Donoghue (one of my favorite hosts) was edited out. Live songs only. It’s a little overdriven on the high end, but that’s kinda how Lush were back then. I recorded them a few days before this and holy high end saturation! I still need to hook up the DBX unit and do a proper transfer of that one.
