Minutemen: I-Beam, San Francisco ca 9/23/85 DBX Cassette Soundboard-DAT-CDR Complete Set

Against my better judgment, I’m going to try to post another bay area Minutemen board tape for today’s On This Date in history. I checked thoroughly this time- nothing on live music archive, nothing on youtube.

The tape was damaged at the beginning of this, but it pulls out of it pretty quickly. Forward to 5min if you can’t handle the quality at the start.
Probably should have rebalanced this- needs more guitar

Minutemen- Berkeley Square, Berkeley Ca 9/21/85 Cassette Master Soundboard-DAT Partial D Boon Watt

Sooo. It’s a bit late. This has been the busiest day in memory. At least it’s still the 21st in Hawaii!
I have 2 versions of this one. This incomplete one and a complete version. The DAT with the complete version is not lost, it’s just not where it is supposed to be at this time. This is why I tell my “tell me what to do” folks to list alternates.
Anyway, the mix was pretty light on bass. In fact, it was light on everything but drums. I did my best to fix it up in Izotope.
Odd that this one is not out on youtube yet.

D.R.I.- Ruthie’s Inn, Berkeley Ca. 9/20/85 xfer from low gen cassette Audio Only

Here is a really cool show from Eric Mcintire’s archive. I went over to his house and borrowed about 30 tapes, then the Nak Dragon died right when I got them home. Sounds pretty good for a 1985 punk tape. I wonder if this is one of Verne Inhel’s pro walkman recordings… anyway, huge thanks to Eric for letting me borrow these tapes.
This is my favorite era of DRI, and within a month of when I saw them for the first time. That was a life changing show.

Corrosion of Conformity- Greystone, Detroit Michigan 10/11/85 xfer f/high gen VHS tape Complete w/Soundboard Audio C.O.C.

Here is an unexpected one for today’s On This Date in History. I usually take pride in bringing the highest quality audio and video possible. Many of you know the story- I bought the best gear possible to do this once. But every once in a while, you’ve gotta slum it I guess.

This has a date of 9/8/85 on my tape list, but C.O.C. played CBGB on that date. So either the date is wrong on Jim Utz’ tape or this is actually from CBGB. The band asks if anyone is actually from Flint, so I assume that the (vague) location is correct and the date is wrong.

But the quality is total trash. It’s a slightly better listen than it is a watch.

The only reason I posted it is because it seems to not be available anywhere online. If anyone can point me to a better version of this out there, I have another OTD that I can put up in its place.

D.R.I. – Country Club, Reseda Ca 9/7/85 Low gen xfer f/Kerry’s VHS tape Dirty Rotten Imbeciles

Let’s start today with the Patreon Voter’s Choice! There is a backstory on this one. My friend Matt Polish used to be good friends with Slayer in the 1980s- he was so close to the band that he would fly to southern cal and stay at Jeff’s house for a week at a time. Kerry would fly up to Sacramento to see someone he was dating and I would pick him up at the airport and drive him around. Sometimes he would give or loan me tapes such as this one when he came up.

This one was a loan and I only had a day or so to get it copied. I begged our next door neighbor to do it at the time and after he heard Tom’s intro to Necrophiliac, he let me know that there would be no more copies on his equipment. LOL. Unfortunately I could only get the entire tape copied once, in 4 hour mode (the obscure VHS “LP” mode).

So since we were voting on patreon for a “D” video, my super-awesome voting patrons once again had great taste and picked this one. It’s DRI’s opening set on the 7th. It’s pretty cool and at shows the band at their absolute peak. I saw them a couple weeks before this and it was life changing.

I have a board tape of this show as well (not from Kerry) that I could synch, but the audio isn’t bad here.
