Henry Rollins- Rockerfeller, Oslo Norway 11/17/99 Spoken Word xfer f/ minidisc-CDR Soundboard Clone

Ah, the good old days of CDR trading. Back in the early 2000’s, “tape” trading really opened up for a lot of people. Once PC’s were able to burn audio CD’s, thousands of people jumped in to the hobby.. which was great! The downside was that a lot of the strict lineage that cassette/DAT traders used kinds went by the wayside. I do know that this was a minidisc master bounced to CDR.
Man, this thing is super dynamic. Mostly quiet with some real loud parts. Even though I have a ton of tools to process audio and video, I don’t have a way to compress audio. I just tried downloading audacity and the install bonked out (my pc is ancient). Oh well, here is the uncompressed version. Turn it up!

Magnet van Beethoven- Old Ironsides, Sacramento 11/5/99 Roland MX5 DAT Soundboard Master Camper

This was a special show. How often do members of Camper van Beethoven come to the tiny Old Ironsides? The answer was 2. They came twice.

Magnet van Beethoven were Chris Xefos and Mark Goodman(Magnet), and Jonathan Segel/Victor Krummencaher (Cammper van Beethoven). This show is so loose and fun, it’s a great listen!

Back in the late 1990’s/early 2000’s, I adopted a peer’s method of mixing shows live. I bought a roland MX-5 battery powered mixer and had some custom cables made that tapped into the soundboard signals for each channel. I would then put on these HUGE headphones to listen to the mix either inside the club, or outside on the sidewalk in the case of Old I and Press Club. What a nerd.

Anyway, this one is pretty decent. Old I was a challenge because the PA was so small that there were not much of the instruments to mix in. Not only that, but the vocals tend to brickwall/distort because of the small PA issue- the vocals would be pushed HARD, just to make them audible. Still a fun listen.

7 Seconds- Bojangles, Sacramento Ca 11/2/99 DAT Soundboard Master Roland MX5 Mix Hardcore

Today is a milestone day- this post is the 5,000th post to be added to the sacramentomusicarchive website. I started this website as a place where all Sacramento audio/video/photo/flyer etc creators can post their content (btw that vision still holds, and if anyone wants to add their own content to the site, please contact me). Thanks to all the contributors (you know who you are)- your volunteer work is appreciated!!
The crazy thing is that we are just getting started. I have received amazing collections to digitize from a lot of people, and we still have Doug Goodman’s, Wayne Vanderkuil’s, and Rick Sylvain’s KALX archive to finish in the short term… then we can start on Barry Ward’s amazing collection of RKL/Crosstops tapes, Brian McKenna’s demo motherlode, Dal Basi’s Sacramento and Stockton treasure trove, Jason Ross’ 1000+ collection of VHS and Audio cassettes… then finally my collection of 1000 VHS, 2000 DATs and 4000 cassettes! So I guess I am saying that this will be a life long project. I should have 20-25 years left in me to keep doing this.
So for today, I decided to pull one from my collection of my master tapes from a while back. This recording was made in the era when I would go to the club and use a battery-powered 4 channel mixer to tap into, then boost the levels of the soundboard, live. I would have these HUGE Nova Pro headphones on my head inside the club or on the sidewalk, trying to hear the mix as I went. It was goofy as hell- people would stop in their tracks with a “what the hell is this nerd doing” look on their face. Haha.
This was recorded a few months before the Troubadour concert they recorded for “Scream Real Loud” CD. They were on fire at this time- so much energy.
