Sheer Terror- Den of Sin, Sacramento Ca. 10/25/19 Multicam with Rode Videomic Pro Stereo NYHC Punk

This was the band that my friend Tromster wanted me to film the most out of this incredibly stacked lineup at Den of Sin… so of course, everything goes wrong with the cameras. The gopro bass angle misses the start of the set, then the battery dies on the guitar gopro before the end of the set. Sorry.
At 22:40 of the set, they started this catchy song and it sounded vaguely familiar. It took me until the 2nd verse to catch that they were doing Salome by The Old 97s! Who knew that old Pauly Bearer and Sheer Terror enjoy alt country. Awesome. Murry Hammond and Ken Bethea- you may want to check it out. Definitely a unique cover version! I think the next song is a cover too- I can’t place it.

Old 97s- KTCK-AM, Dallas Tx 6/27/00 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette 97’s alt.country

Here is a crazy one- Old 97s make an appearance on a sports talk radio station. The radio hosts clearly are not accustomed to hosting musicians, or maybe their demeanor is always this abrasive.. but it is an entertaining listen.
Interview and 3 songs in studio: Lonely Holiday, Jagged and Crash on the Barrelhead.

Audio Live Performance

Old 97s- Alice’s Now & Zen Fest, Sharon Meadow, Golden Gate Park, SF 9/26/99 DAT Sbd Master xfer

This was a crazy day. I left Sac early, met up with my friend Kirk and headed to GGP to see the Old 97s open(?) this show. Kirk taped from the audience and I gave a DAT to the soundman so he could run a board tape. Since this was a “big” show, I could not hang out in the soundbooth and watch my levels. When I checked the tape later, the levels were set way too high. I was able to work with it and rebalance and salvage it. The mix settles down at about 4min into the set, and the funky high end swirling sound never goes away- I think it was windy that day.
Then that night, we went to see the Ranchero Brothers and the 97s play a secret show at the Stork Club, where they played so many deep cuts. Best day ever.

Old 97s- Fight Songs Outtakes xfer from 2nd gen cassette 97’s alt.country

Many years ago (20ish?), I got some really cool stuff from a guy- I think his name was Riley. It’s been a long time and lost a lot of my lists and correspondence. Anyway, he was friends with the band so look for some really cool/old stuff coming up.
This one was at the end of one of the tapes he sent. I think some of these versions were released on the 3-LP reissue of Fight Songs a couple years back, but I can’t tell if all of them are exactly the same.
Tracks are: Weightless/The Villain/Murder or a Heart Attack (w/organ)

Audio Demo

Old 97s- Hi Pointe, St. Louis Mo 4/5/97 xfer from 2nd gen VHS Enhanced Live Complete Full Concert

Here is the other show from that Old 97s VHS tape- this one RIPS. Man, I love this era of the band and I am so thankful to have seen them so much back then… but this may be my favorite 97s video from the ’90s. The lighting on stage is uneven so I just denoised the pic and left the lighting as is.
Oh, one other thing about the Stubb’s show from yesterday- I mentioned that Ken made mistakes at the beginning of the set. He let us know that he had a new guitar tech- first time out- and they totally screwed up the tuning the guitar. Haha, that must be a nightmare. I experienced that once in person- Girlschool in 2014.

Old 97s- SXSW, Stubb’s BBQ, Austin Tx. March 1997 xfer from 2nd gen VHS enhanced live EXENE CERVENKA

I still have a lot of old 97s master videos to post, but I am waiting on audio from KN. It’s probably better to wait since I am working on an AI upscaling system- hopefully those old videos will work in 4k. Speaking of that, trying to find the right motherboard and memory to buy when you have an older (new in box) core i7 CPU is enough to make you crazy. I spent hours just now, trying to ensure everything is compatible and powerful enough to do the job. It shouldn’t be that hard.
While we wait, here is a great apparently uncirculated video of the band playing sxsw in early 1997. Ken botches the start of The Other Shoe, which causes Rhett to screw up the vocals. They recover pretty well, but it is funny to watch.
Oh, and Exene comes out and sings Four Leaf Clover to close the set!
