Bruce Dickinson- Aftershock Fest, Discovery Park Sacramento Ca 10/3/25 4K UHD Master w/Schoeps Audio

Here’s video #2 for the day, and it is the Patreon Voter’s Choice! Thanks voters- new ballots get sent late tomorrow and it’s only $10/mo to play. New polls every week! I am so backlogged that I think I will put up about 10 recently filmed shows and let you pick.

Alright, I need to warn you about this one. My good friend Jeff was giving me those Shaq Beatbox punches since they were FREE and I got pretty hammered.

The good news is that I found a pole in the edge of the VIP section that face the shockwave stage, so I popped it up there and that kept is steady. The bad news is that there was an “influencer” who kept sticking her camera right in front of mine. It isn’t too obvious for most of the show, but it irritated the hell out of me.

The schoeps audio sounds better than I expected since I was so far away from the stage and off to the side. So far off in fact, that the audio and video is out of synch a bit. I was so far away that the sound had to travel to me. LOL Big shows.

Nice keytar btw

Alkaline Trio- Aftershock Fest, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/2/25 4K UHD Complete w/Schoeps Audio

It’s our weekly Patreon Voter’s Choice selection! All of our $10 per month and up patrons get to vote on a weekly post. This past week’s theme was Aftershock Day 1. Alkaline Trio ran away with the vote this week. I want to thank my patrons for their support and for not presenting me with yet another tie. If you want to get in on the action, I will share a link to the patreon in comments. I think you can figure out what this coming week’s vote will be!

OK, about the video. I had planned to get to the fest early on Thursday but it was raining and my cast (and mics on my head) do not do well with water. So I had to wait for that to stop and then I headed over. I missed the Ataris, Snot and Thrown. Dammit.

This was my first attempt at filming the main stage and just like past years, the VIP section sounded like ass. That’s why you see me pull up stakes and move to GA. Sorry for the shakiness of the video, I was getting used to filming from a distance with the cast on. It settles down after about 10min.

Anthrax- Aftershock Fest, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/12/24 4K Master w/Schoeps Audio Thrash Metal

I only did Thursday and Saturday at Aftershock this year and it makes me wonder how I ever did all 4 days. Man, I am TIRED.
My cousin Tony came by with his truck this morning to help me out so I decided to post this one today for him- Anthrax is one of his favorite bands. I am still puzzled as to why Anthrax, one of the “big 4” of Thrash, is playing a 45 minute set at 4:15 in the afternoon. Slayer headlined Thursday… and Anthrax headlined (or was 2nd billed) on Thursday in 2021. They even got the shaft on stage configuration- they were playing right into the sun. Brutal. They were still great and it clearly didn’t seem to bother them.
This is the only set that I used the ZS70 for- it is an inferior camera to the ZS200, but it has a way better zoom and with the stage being so bright, I figured it was the right choice and I was right about that. The sound in the spot that I initially set up in was awful- not only was it overly bassy/muddy but I heard a lot of high end swirl as well. keep in mind that this audio is AFTER I eq’d a lot of the bass out of the low end. I moved to a better sounding spot about 20min in and it sounds a lot better from then on.
8 song greatest hits set. Everyone I talked to about it loved them.

Clutch- Aftershock Fest, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/12/24 4k complete Schoeps Audio Stoner Rock

Today is my good friend Brian McKenna’s 55th birthday, and he is a big Clutch fan. Happy Birthday Brian! I have known him for 35 years- where does the time go?

Clutch are a pretty jammy band, so you get some sets where they are on, and some where they are mere mortals. In my (humble) opinion, they were “on” at this show, big time. I literally fell asleep during the only other time I saw them (Psycho fest 2019). The bass mix was super heavy here so I had to boost the guitars in izotope to make them audible. I think the fat mix helps a band like this a lot- you can feel the groove. I enjoyed the set quite a bit. We had to bail during the end of the last song to make it to Anthrax in time.

High Vis- Aftershock Fest, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/12/24 4K Complete Show Schoeps Audio

I made sure to leave early enough to catch this set on Saturday. A bunch of friends told me that this is the band to see, and they weren’t wrong. It was pretty comical- when their set started, there was nobody at the stage- maybe 50 people along the front row of this huge stage. I took a picture of the sparse crowd and made a smart ass comment about aftershock attendees having great taste… and Danny Wimmer himself asked me what the hell I was talking about. I guess it’s not a good joke if you need to explain it.
Anyway, more people did show up and this video turned out fantastic- the audio is stellar and the only flaw was me turning the camera off by accident while trying to focus at about 55 seconds in.

Body Count- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/12/24 Complete 4K Schoeps Audio ICE-T

Welp, it looks like the Till Lindemann video from yesterday was removed from Youtube due to nudity. I don’t agree with the decision, but what are you gonna do? It’s not like can talk to anyone at YT HQ. Sorry everyone. I spent a week on that one for it to be available for less than a day.
Let’s post 2 videos today to make up for it. Here is probably the best video I have from aftershock- performance, quality, camerawork-wise. Right before they started the set, I told my friend Matt that I was moving over to avoid the pit and right after I said it, you can see the pit erupt. That is how the video starts. I get over to a safe area to video about a minute in, and the audio and video quality improve about 5min in. Such a great set!

…and the hits keep on coming! Body Count does a new song that YT has blocked the audio portion, so I had to choose between editing out the audio and video, or replacing the audio. The pit was raging and I did not want to lose the video, so I found some awesome music from youtube’s library to use. Hope you like it. Concert audio ends at about 13:00 and resumes at about 17:00.

Judas Priest- Aftershock Fest, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/12/24 full complete show Schoeps Audio

Although Till and Body count had the best sets (IMHO) at Aftershock, this one was by far the most enjoyable. Judas Priest holds a special place for me, as British Steel was the first heavy metal album I bought in 1980- from the Columbia House record club. I remember putting it on for the first time. I’ve seen priest twice before- once in 1988 (thanks to Slayer for the passes to that one) and in 2018(?) on that Deep Purple co headline thing.
I saw some folks on the aftershock facebook group complaining about Rob’s vocals. He is a power vocalist who is 73 years old- he’s not gonna sound like he did on Unleashed in the East. If you take that mindset going in, you can enjoy the show.
What made it so great for me was the choice of setlist. It was the perfect “greatest hits” set, plus I finally got to see Rapid Fire- one of my all time favorite priest songs- performed live. In fact, we were supposed to cut out toward the end to get to the main stage for Iron Maiden, and I told my friend Matt that I was staying- it was too good.

Iron Maiden- Aftershock Fest, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/12/24 4K UHD Complete Show Schoeps Audio

Alright, I need to tell you up front that this video is not great. After Priest’s set ended, there was just an endless sea of people at the main stage for Maiden. We did the best we could and weaved our way through people to get to the center structure where the mixing board is. Standing on that barrier base gives me about 2 or 3 inches (keep your jokes to yourselves) and I can lean on the barrier to stabilize myself… but I was WAY back there and there were a TON of hands and phones in the air. So, this generally sucks but it sounds good. Sorry, I did my best.
General consensus among the aftershock fb group and my fb friends was that this set was self-indulgent and boring. I understand that they were on “The Future Past” world tour, which “includes fan favorites as well as songs from Iron Maiden’s 2021 album Senjutsu and 1986’s Somewhere in Time.” Save those specialty sets for your hardcore fans- people who bought a ticket to see Iron Maiden at a headlining set featuring only Iron Maiden. If you are playing a fest, pull out a greatest hits set and make the people happy. Oh well, I am not in charge of Iron Maiden Inc., they can do whatever they want to their brand.

Slayer- Aftershock Fest, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/10/24 4K Full Show Schoeps Audio Thrash Metal

Finally, here is the Slayer set from Thursday. I kept losing focus for about the first 15min and then I finally found the auto focus lock and it was pretty smooth sailing for the rest of the show. I had not used this camera in a couple years so it took a bit for me to fix the focus issue. Audio turned out pretty good as well- it was a bit light on guitar so I izotope’d it and I am pretty happy with it. Enjoy!

Cypress Hill- Aftershock Fest, Discovery Park, Sacramento Ca 10/10/24 Schoeps Audio Only Partial Set

2 Aftershock posts today. This one is a partial audio-only set from Cypress Hill. Matt and I had a drink after the Teen Mortgage set and were walking literally from one end of the festival grounds to the other to see Biohazard. We came across Cypress Hill and caught about 20min of the set. The stage was a massive sea of people and my video is worthless (especially from a distance and after a drink), but I am pretty shocked that the audio is this good.
Kudos to the soundman who was able to make it sound amazing despite the less-than-stellar recording position. If I knew that Biohazard was going to be 15 min late for their set, I would have hung out at this stage longer…
