Metallica Orion Fest Footage: Skateboarding, Kirk’s Crypt, Metclub Tent, Custom Car, Jim Breuer 2012

Since we have been sick this weekend, I spent some time organizing some old family video footage. I found these non-musical performance clips I took from Orion Fest back in 2012 buried in the family discs. I forgot I filmed these-They are pretty cool. There is footage of the Van’s skate ramp with Steve Caballero, Kirk’s Crypt(outside only- line was too long!), Custom Car Show including some of Hetfield’s cars, a talk with Toby Stapleton & Dan Nykolayko in the metclub fanclub only tent talking about merch (moderated by Jim Breuer), and some footage of the memorabilia in the metclub tent as well. Metallica fans who did not attend the fest would probably like this. Enjoy!

Volbeat- Orion Festival, Bader Field, Atlantic City NJ 6/24/12 HD Master Video

That Son Volt post this morning was a bonus post- here is the video post to kick off the weekend. I could have sworn I posted this before, but it’s not there. I remember writing about my surprise that Hank Shermann was playing with them.
Anyway, my cousin Kim and I flew back east to see Metallica’s inaugural fest back in 2012. The lineup was surprisingly diverse, so I went for it. Volbeat was one of the bands (along with Ghost and The Sword) that I was introduced to while checking out bands in the leadup to the fest. I think I have audio with my DPA 4061 mics as well, but I will need to dig for it. Might be good to synch.
This was filmed with my first HD camera, so no stabilization, no fancy video processing.. just a stock Canon consumer HD camcorder. Turned out alright.

Metallica- Orion Fest, Bader Field, Atlantic City NJ 6/23/12 1080P HD Master Full Black Album

Here’s the 2nd and final Metallica set from Orion 2012. They performed the Black Album in its entirety. It looks like I settled down a bit and did a better job on filming this one. I had never listened to the Black Album so I listened to it a bunch before the show- pretty good release. Some of the deep cuts are really good.
There is a nice multicam of this show from the satellite feed, but posting my version here just in case people are dying to see a shaky audience video of the set.

Ghost- Orion Fest, Bader Field, Atlantic City NJ 6/24/12 1080p HD Master Metal B.C.

When we started up the sac music archive, everything from our youtube channels were supposed to be on here… but I keep finding stuff that didn’t make it. Here come 3 videos from the time I travelled to Orion Fest in 2012.

Here is Ghost back when they were relatively unknown, performing in the daytime as the first band of day 2 of Orion fest. Sorry for the shakiness- cameras were not explicitly allowed at Orion so I had no monopod. Filmed with Canon HF200 with stock microphone.

Metallica- Orion Fest, Bader Field, Atlantic City NJ 6/23/12 1080P HD Master Full Ride the Lightning

I decided to go to Orion Fest in 2012 for 2 reasons- the really good (and surprisingly diverse) lineup, and to see Metallica play Ride the Lightning in its entirety for the first time ever. Here is that Metallica performance.

I am a little embarrassed about the camera work here- I had not been video’ing concerts much since my hiatus in 2002, and I had never been very good at doing large shows. The HF200 did not have stabilzation, so it is shaky. You can see me getting lost many times, trying to find band members on the massive stage. I was also super excited to see this show, so my camerawork is a little too aggressive and I zoom up way too much, way too often. That, along with the fact that this show was already shared as a multicamera (satellite feed) online, caused me to bury this one until now… but some people prefer these audience shots, so here you go.

In hindsight, if I knew that the multicam was going to be available, I would have focused on video’ing all of the other bands during the day.

Suicidal Tendencies- Orion Fest, Atlantic City NJ 6/23/12 Robert Trujillo and Infectious Grooves

Orion was such a great festival. I got to see Roky Erickson, Volbeat, Ghost (in the daytime!) along with Metallica playing RTL and Black album in their entirety. The surprise of the weekend for me was this set. Suicidal played the smallest stage and there had to be 10,000 people there. It just went back for miles. I was pretty close, so I was getting smacked around a bit. Also, my arm was super tired so I did not film the entire set. Robert Trujillo makes a surprise appearance and plays on ST and Infectious Grooves songs. For Paul Piazza and Kim Cook (because she was there, but missed this set!)
