Here’s a decent audience recording of Avail right when they started their lookout records run. I decided to post this one because of the unruly crowd – it sounds like there was at least one person who was disrupting the show. Tim had to stop the song/show multiple times because of this guy. It sounds like this was done with some type of pro walkman, it has that “big hall echo” going.

In 1994, I was lucky enough to tape 8 Pavement shows through the soundboard with my DAT recorder. Huge thanks to Scott and Remko for making it happen. This was the first show I did in a 5 show run in April of 1994. I drove from L.A. over to Phoenix on Wednesday, then Hollywood the next night, then 3 sets in San Francisco over the weekend. Then I flew to the Midwest the next weekend to film Uncle Tupelo’s last shows ever. I would say that was a pretty productive 2 weeks.
Anyway, this one was the weakest mix of the 1994 shows. It starts off with the guitar too low in the mix, then you hear the guitar zooming in and out of the mix for a bit from 6-12 minute mark. By the 15 minute mark, it stabilizes. My rebalance is focused on the set from 15 minutes on- there are short parts where the guitar or bass is WAY too loud before that. FYI.

First of all, I need to give a huge thank you to postcarder Laura Levy for inviting me over to her home and letting me borrow these extremely rare VHS tapes. It was nice meeting you in real life! Laura was friends with the Gin Blossoms in the early days. I believe that this is the only video on youtube with founding guitarist and main songwriter of all of those early hits (Hey Jealousy, Found Out About You, etc), Doug Hopkins. If you are unaware of Doug’s story, I recommend that you read the “Jesus of Suburbia” article published by the Detroit Metro times- I will link it in FB comments. In short, Doug wrote the hits but had some trouble in the studio (Alcoholism) when it came time to record the major label debut. Instead of the label helping Doug through these issues with their big money, the label pressures the band to kick him out… and they did, which is part of the reason why they have never released anything that even touches the caliber of the early stuff since. You can read the detail in the metro times article about the circumstances leading up to his tragic death from suicide on December 5th, 1993.

Here is another amazing gift from Laura Levy. She let me borrow a couple of tapes when I was up in Seattle back in August. Thanks again, Laura! The Gin Blossoms played a local showcase at The Mason Jar with a couple other band- those will be posted soon. Unfortunately, the video suffers from distorted audio. Maybe Seneca St. James can tutor me on his anti-distortion skillz in Izotope Rx8. When I try to use Spectral Repair, it just sounds weird… and we still have that Muffs soundboard that could be saved as well.

Since today is an observed holiday (day off) for many people, here is another video. I’ll start the audio posts tomorrow. Here is yet another awesome 1980s video shot by Laura Levy. Glue were a local Phoenix band with the following members: Todd Joseph, Jim Peterson, Scott Palmer, PJ Van Zanen. Suffers the same audio fate as the Gin Blossoms from the same show, that I posted a week or so back.

Wow, what a day. Work into dinner for the kids into Kings game and now home. This may be the latest daily post ever, but I made it before midnight! Here is the last 1980s video from Laura Levy’s collection of master tapes. Feedbags were also a local Phoenix band with the following members: Jim Swafford, Dave Swafford, Rick Purcell, Gary Martin Suffers the same audio fate as the Gin Blossoms and Glue from the same show, I still need to get schooled by Seneca on this “de-distort the audio” stuff.

This one is going to be long. I’ll let Laura Levy give the detail: The Del Montes were the “alter ego״ band of the Gin Blossoms, playing covers and originals several night a week in 1988/1989 often at Long Wongs, a long gone and much missed Tempe institution on Mill Ave. This particular night was “pirate night”, the band members at this point were Doug Hopkins (Otis Del Monte r.i.p) on lead guitar, Bill Leen (Soup Bone Del Monte) on bass, Jesse Valenzuela (Pablo Del Monte), Dan Henzerling (Ishmael Del Monte) on drums and Robin Wilson (Biff Del Monte). I shot this show with a hand held Sony camera that was quite literally purchased from the trunk of a car at a Circle K. The sound is dreadful, but it’s a document of an era. Great moments, silly interludes, friends called up to the stage, and drunken mayhem. Many thanks to Shayne Stacy who encouraged me to share this tape, and spent hours cleaning it up. Laura Levy Track list below.

Here is a incredibly rare video from Arizona’s Desecration. In 1987, these guys were pretty popular with tape traders and the Gilman crowd. I thought they would end up being pretty popular, but they released one split LP with Subverse and that was about it. This one comes from Wayne VanDerkuil’s archive — one of the few videos in there, and the only one I have never seen anywhere.
