Tales of Terror- “The Cobain 50” KEXP Podcast 11/6/24

Huge thanks to Marc Malakie for letting me know that this existed. KEXP is doing a podcast series on the 50 bands that influenced Cobain (and others from the grunge scene). This is a really well-done deep dive into the early Sac punk scene, including quotes our friends Dennis Yudt and Rusi Gustafson. RC Boys! Kin’s Coloma! Sacramento Records! So cool.

Thanks to Dusty Henry for mentioning the sac music archive multiple times- his remarks at 24:30 is a nice testimonial for the site. I had no idea and it was pretty validating hearing it mentioned.

Accused AD- Plaid Pig, Tacoma Wa. 8/6/22 4K UHD Multicam Hardcore Punk Metal

What a wild night. I was on vacation doing family stuff and I get to the club super late. Across the street from the venue is 2 biker bars and there are literally HUNDREDS to harley davidsons lined up and people packed in the bars and flowing out onto the street. I got lucky and found a parking spot right next to one of the bars and across the street from the venue.
I get in there and this is the punkest punk club I have been to in years- dank and humid, graffiti everywhere, and the drink selection consisted of PBR, Miller and Coors light. I talk to the soundman about plugging into the board and he tells me that the outputs are blown- there is no way to get a board mix. So instead, I settle into an area that should be safe from the pit and a good place for audio… and then that side of the PA starts smoking. The soundman assures me that it is working fine, but when Blaine starts checking the mic, nothing is coming out of that main.
So I scramble over to the other side of the stage and get close to the PA, hoping I get decent audio. Nope- it was garbled and distorted. So instead of a board mix, or the rode video pro stereo mic, you get Canon HFG50 stock audio. I tried.

Here’s one from Craig Babb’s collection of master video. I looked on discogs and did the obligatory web search and I can find no information on this band. Any info about them would be appreciated. A band called the Spokes playing in a bike shop in Bellingham, how can you not love that? A band named American Standard opens the show. I did not check the entire set, but there are some covers in here. Not sure if they played originals.

Pyro Goblin Puppet show at Autonomous Mutant Festival, near St. Helens Wa. 2005 xfer from master VHS

OK, this isn’t technically music, but this was performed at a music festival AND James R. Edmonds (supplier of Farm master soundboards) was the mastermind of this… so let’s run with it. Think of it as a bonus post due to the short B’Last post today.
I learned something new- this Autonomous Mutant fest appears to be a guerrilla festival: “AMF is held in a new location each year on public land in Washington, Oregon or Northern California. Directions will be posted just before the festival begins.”.. interesting. This 2005 version was held near Mt. St. Helens, Wa.

Subhumans- Showbox, Seattle Wa 3/27/03 xfer from VHS-C Master Tape incomplete

Here’s another short video for you- it’s short video day I guess. This one is from Arica Pelino’s collection. As I digitized all of The Enemies shows that she taped on that March 2003 west coast tour, there was this 3 minute clip of The Subhumans that was recorded after the enemies’ set that was not labeled on the tape. Taped from the backstage area- there are some great crowd/venue shots.

Barbara Manning and the Go Luckys- The Shop, Spokane 8/24/01 Multitrack Master-CDR Complete Show

I’m taking a small risk and pulling something off my “no list” list for today’s On This Date in History. A little less than half this show was released by the band on the “Barbara Manning & The Go-Luckys! – One Starry Night At The Shop” LP… but I was sent the entire show because I booked Barbara’s tour.

I had no experience in booking a tour- just a cell phone, some business sense, my friend Laurie’s list of club contacts, and Intel’s fax machine (don’t tell them, ok?. haha). It turned out to be a successful 6 week tour and the band actually came out ahead! Only 1 failed show out of 30 or so.

It’s a bit of a risk because 1. the entire thing was not released but could be. Maybe Pat Thomas can drum up a 3xLP deluxe record store day reissue. and 2. I don’t know if (the now long-defunct) Innerstate Records would appreciate their legalese being out on the internets. So that’s 2 reasons for Pat to get excited about this, 1 for Russ from innerstate, and 1 for Robert (the recording guy at the shop). Let me know, guys.
