Venom- City Gardens, Trenton NJ. 4/2/86 Audio Only xfer from 2nd gen from Rollins’ tape Black Metal

The biggest Venom fan I have ever met(virtually or otherwise), Joseph Reinsbach, messaged me and introduced himself in late February. He let me know that this Venom show was uncirculated, which was surprising. So he waited for 3 months, through my shoulder surgery and other projects, and I was finally able to lift and pull the trays off the shelf and digitize the tapes for him. It was split over 3 tapes and I am not sure if this is the complete show of what was circulating at the time.
Here is the background on this recording:
On April 2nd 1986 Venom played a gig together with Black Flag at City Gardens in Trenton, New Jersey. Legend has it that Black Flag roadie Joe Cole recorded the entire show and cut all the songs out of Venom’s set except for a few seconds of intros and outros, leaving behind the between-song stage banter of Venom’s frontman Cronos. In 1991 Ecstatic Peace released the result on a 7”.
This is 45min of that show.
Joe and Henry were best friends. So if the above is true, this is probably a 2nd gen from master tape or 3rd if Rollins had a copy of Joe’s tape.

PS: $6.66 at the door. HAHA! I hope Randy Now had 34 cents times about 500 ready.

Venom- Maison Des Sports, Clemont Ferrand, France 10/31/85 xfer f/ unknown gen cassette Black Metal

Here’s one that is not from Doug, Eggplant, or KALX. I can’t remember the last time I posted something outside of those sources.
This one comes from Venom’s #1 fan, Joseph Reinsbach. He asked that I post this one, as it is a rare one. I did my best to fix this one up, but the levels were totally brickwalled. One day, I will get the source cassettes and it will sound slightly better. Slightly, haha. 2 venom posts in 1 week! Last time that will happen in a while.

Venom- Palladium, Hollywood Ca 4/19/85 xfer from master tape Ultimate Revenge Tour Black Metal

If you have been paying attention, you knew this was coming today. Uncirculated Venom from 1985, thanks to Tour Manager Doug! This one sounds pretty good(no volume distortion) for most of the set, until they turn it up too loud for human consumption. Classic venom.

Venom- California Theater, San Diego Ca 4/18/85 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape enhanced Black Metal

Here’s one from Chris Eng’s collection that he did not tape, but he got it from Cliff Cunningham, the guy who filmed it. Best quality I have seen of this one- thanks Cliff and Chris! I think that this is the only video footage of Venom on the Ultimate Revenge Tour- the official release had Venom footage from the UK.

Venom- Kabuki, San Francisco Ca 4/12/85 xfer from master audio cassette Black Metal

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! I am pretty sure Doug taped this one- I think I hear him heckling the band at times. Pretty much all Venom recordings from this tour sound terrible due to the stage volume that they were pushing along with 1980s sound systems trying to keep up… but this one sounds better than most.

Venom- Kabuki Theater, San Francisco Ca. 4/12/85 Audio Only xfer from low gen audio cassette

I wasn’t planning on posting this one, but I gave this another listen while prepping the disc for Eric and it sounds pretty good for a 1985 Venom tape!
This is yet another gen from Eric Mcintire’s collection.

Venom- Spectrum, Montreal Quebec Canada 3/25/85 Ultimate Revenge Tour no Mantas xfer f/ Master tape

I made a mistake on the post today- the tape was not marked at all, so I listened and made a guess- with the shout-outs to Voi Vod, I assumed it was the show that they played with them at The Ritz on 4/5/86. Doug just emailed me and told me that it was not the Ritz show, and that it might be Montreal. I went back and listened to the tape closely and Cronos does mention Montreal after Black Metal. A quick check of setlist.fm shows that the set matches the Spectrum show from 3/25/85. So, there you go. I totally whiffed on the ol’ detective work on this one.

here’s my original post for reference:

Since there are not one but two pieces of news about Venom in today’s news cycle, I figured I would post the last Tour Manager Doug master recording of Venom. About those news items- Tom talked about Cronos “hitting” him when we were all backstage at the Crest show in 85, and I think the black eye was still visible. Odd to see that story get some legs all these years later.
Regarding the Venom Inc article about Abaddon’s departure from the band, I’ll keep my opinions (mostly) to myself… but I know how well Antony treats his fans and he was battling cancer as well (not mentioned in the article). He’s a good guy who seems to have gotten a raw deal.
Anyway, this one is definitely a Doug master. You can hear him clowning with friends during breaks in the music- he clearly prefers Voi Vod over Venom “Voigod! haha). Classic!
