Raven- Harpo’s, Detroit Mi 4/27/85 complete show xfer from low gen FM broadcast cassette NWOBHM

Here is the last metal-focused post for On This Date in History for now. Don’t worry, there are thousands more tapes of metal over here. I have not even picked out the one for tomorrow, so who knows.

Anyway, I used to trade with a guy in Detroit who had a bunch of awesome stuff. We traded audio and video in the late 80s and I got this from him. I think he taped these off the radio, but I am not sure…

I don’t know what the deal was with the live metal FM broadcasts, but they were always super muddy sounding, at least to start. I think the station tried to matrix together the board with some audience mics, and it turned into this. It gets a bit better a few minutes in. Full 90 minute set from the Stay Hard tour.

Social Unrest- Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco Ca. 4/20/85 Audio xfer from Master Soundboard Cassette

Here’s another one from Eric Mcintire’s amazing collection of early SF tapes. Eric taped this one himself from the mixing board. I am going to try to enhance these old soundboard tapes with an application called Izotope. I hope to get time this weekend sometime.

Venom- Palladium, Hollywood Ca 4/19/85 xfer from master tape Ultimate Revenge Tour Black Metal

If you have been paying attention, you knew this was coming today. Uncirculated Venom from 1985, thanks to Tour Manager Doug! This one sounds pretty good(no volume distortion) for most of the set, until they turn it up too loud for human consumption. Classic venom.

Slayer- Palladium, Hollywood Ca 4/19/85 xfer from master tape Ultimate Revenge Thrash Metal

Onward with the next set from the Ultimate Revenge show that Doug taped. This appears to be the only one that ever circulated in audio form- I got it in a trade back in the 80s, but it sure didn’t sound this good.
It’s a return home for the band and the crowd is clearly going ape shit.

Exodus- Palladium, Hollywood Ca 4/19/85 xfer from master tape Ultimate Revenge Thrash Metal

Back to Tour Manager Doug’s treasure trove of tapes. I still need to send pics to confirm that he did tape this one (it sounds slightly different), but this one is pretty awesome- an uncirculated Ultimate Revenge show!
Let’s start with Exodus’ opening set. They only had 30min and made good use of it. Ripping set of mostly BBB tracks. More to come tomorrow. (Hint hint)

Venom- California Theater, San Diego Ca 4/18/85 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape enhanced Black Metal

Here’s one from Chris Eng’s collection that he did not tape, but he got it from Cliff Cunningham, the guy who filmed it. Best quality I have seen of this one- thanks Cliff and Chris! I think that this is the only video footage of Venom on the Ultimate Revenge Tour- the official release had Venom footage from the UK.

Slayer- Crest Theater, Sacramento Ca 4/13/85 xfer from master audio cassette rebalanced Thrash Metal

It’s tour manager Doug Tuesday! I checked the remaining shows left to post from his collection, and it looks like I have just about the exact number of Slayer shows to get us to the week of Aftershock Fest.. so guess what you are gonna get every Tuesday?
This was the first time I had ever seen Slayer and I was already a massive fan of the band. We had worn out the grooves on the Show No Mercy album, and Hell Awaits had just been released. As soon as we showed up at the venue, we saw my friend Matt Polish who was friends with Slayer. We got to hang out the entire night backstage, it was surreal. When Venom started their set, I had a tough choice- keep hanging with Slayer, or watch the Venom set? I figured I would catch Venom next time so I watched a bit of the set and headed back to the backstage party. I figured I would catch them next time. There was no next time. Still an amazing memory.
Dave Lombardo gave me his Venom Tour ’85 backstage pass that night and I ended up selling it on Ebay years later. D’oh! Shoulda kept it.
Oh, about the tape. This one was a little rough so I tried to EQ it, but that buried the vocals so I boosted them in Izotope. Both tapes from this night (Doug’s and Mark Martin’s) are pretty rough; it was loud.

Exodus- Crest Theater, Sacramento Ca 4/13/85 xfer from master Audio Cassette Thrash Metal

Alright, I hope that the Monday after Spring forward is going ok for you all. I had a head start yesterday with an EARLY soccer game for my daughter. Who dreams up these schedules anyway…
This is a recording that I posted before, but it was a 1st or 2nd gen copy. This one is right off Doug’s master tape. Here’s what I previously said about the show:
“This was my first time seeing Exodus and it was life changing. I think we came in during their set and we were just floored with the band’s intensity. You can’t really tell with the quality of this one, but they sounded amazing. When they got to Strike of the Beast, I was converted. Bought BBB as soon as it was released a couple weeks later.”

Mediocre Monday Y’all. When I inherited Mark Martin’s tape collection, he kept a few shows for himself. This was one of them and I somehow never had a copy.. or ever even seen one until I came across this one in Wayne Vanderkuil’s box of stuff. Thanks Wayne!

I did my best to make this listenable- despite the EQ settings, it is still suffers a bit from high end distortion.

Here’s the other tape I transferred today. Since there was so much hype about Slaxodus playing the pizza park a couple weeks ago, here’s the real deal from the first time they came to Sacramento. My friend Matt Polish got me and my cousin Tony backstage to hang with the band. Good times. One of my big regrets was hanging backstage with Slayer during Venom’s set. I figured I’d catch them next time…
Recorded by Mark Martin on a cheap panasonic recorder.
