Belly- Great American Music Hall, San Francisco Ca. 8/26/16 Canon HFG30 and Rode Video Pro Mic

This was a show I was looking forward to. I bought tickets 6 months ago and it has been sold out for a while. Out of all the 90s alternative bands, I saw EVERYONE (Nirvana 3x, Dino Jr 3x, Buffalo tom 3x, Meat Puppets 10x, Teenage Fanclub, etc etc etc) except Belly, and they were one of my favorites. We got tot he club and it said “no flash photography” so I walked in with my G30 and set up. I was quickly accosted by security, and they told me I could film but I could not have the monopod on the floor. I handheld it for a bit (you’ll see) but then got the great idea to put the monopod base in my pocket. It worked like a charm and I filmed that way up until the encores, when security man came by and said no monopod AT ALL. So, the encores suck. Sorry. It turned out pretty nice- audio & focus gets better about 20min into the show when I take it off auto. PS: dot-com snobs with their glasses of wine don’t like punk videographers. FYI.

Belly- American Theatre, St. Louis Mo 10/21/95 xfer f/master VHS tape Multicamera KDHX Double Helix

I could have sworn that this show was up on YT already. I searched for it about 10 different ways and I can’t find it, so here you go. This is a good way to pre-game for Belly’s tour that starts this week! Lots of songs from KING on here, and they are playing that album in its entirety on this go round. Can’t wait, I have been a huge fan of that one since 1995.
The audio on this one is not great, unfortunately. It sounds like a raw board mix which was light on guitar plus whatever the crew could pull from the audience mics. Still enjoyable. I appreciated Double Helix so much- they were pioneers in doing stuff like this.

Belly- Radcliffe Session, England 7/24/95 xfer f/1st gen audio cassette Live Acoustic Tanya Donelly

This is a fun one for today’s On This Date in History- I really enjoy these English radio sessions. So laid back and fun. I could not find an image to go with this one, so you get the concert poster for the big concerts they were talking about playing during the session. I know the REM show at Milton Keynes was broadcast worldwide, but I don’t have a Belly recording from any of these. Odd.

Belly- Elysee Montmatre, Paris France 3/9/95 Audio Only DAT Clone xfer Live Tanya Donnelly

Here’s another Belly show from a beautiful venue in Paris. Man, it must be such a thrill to tour and play places like this, especially for the first time.
This is a transfer off a clone, of a clone, of the master. There were 2 shows on the tape and one had some issues with static (somewhat common with old DATs) but this one seemed to play fine. Good set, nice sound.

Belly- KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas, Universal Amp L.A. 12/12/93 DAT Master xfer Live Tanya Donelly

Man, YT was having some issues today. I could not get to my drafts, I was getting worried for a minute. Here is the second night of Belly at acoustic xmas- no false starts or cursing on this one. FYI, I think they run the same interview as on night one.

Over the next few weeks (weekdays), I will be posting sets from the 1993 Almost Acoustic Xmas. On the night of Dec 11th, I was driving to grab dinner for the family and I turn on KROQ and I hear that they were broadcasting the entire show live on the radio! I listened to KROQ regularly back then and did not recall any advertising for the broadcast. I hauled ass back home and grabbed a DAT and started recording. I was broke back then, so I have these sets scattered over about 5 DATs. I think I only lost a couple minutes of one set due to tape change- General Public. I even was able to edit in the interviews from other sections of the tape. The Blind Melon interview is a sad foreshadow of their future.
Anyway, hope you enjoy these. I became a fan of at least a few of these bands through this broadcast.

Belly- KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas, Universal Amphitheater L.A. 12/11/93 Tanya Donnelly Acoustic Live

Here is the set that made me a Belly fan for life. The single being played on KROQ (Feed the Tree) didn’t do much for me so I didn’t buy the CD… but when I heard this set I snagged the CD and every release since. Such a great band. Tanya’s solo stuff is underrated as well.
They get away with cursing on air during this set- Tanya blurts out “shit” after a false start during Slow Dog.

Belly- Impaxx, Buffalo NY 9/7/93 xfer from 1st gen cassette Live Audience Recording

Here is one from an old taping friend who taped some really amazing stuff in Buffalo. He also had connections with 10,000 Maniacs and he shared some cool stuff by them as well. In fact, this was on a tape with a soundboard tape of 10,000 maniacs that he mastered. That one is coming soon.
He had a ton of jam bands that I didn’t care about, but he would tape all of the alternative bands coming through and they always sounded stellar. This is an example. He has been gone about 25 years now. R.I.P.

Belly- Selina’s, Coogee Bay Hotel, Sydney Australia 6/4/93 Live Audience Recording DAT Master Clone

Here’s another one that was requested to be digitized for a trade so I figured I would put it up here too. I am a fan of the band, and I somehow amassed 73 audio recordings of them, mostly from back when I was trading. This one appears to be uncirculated.

Belly- Santa Monica Pier 4/16/93 Quasi-Multicam xfer from master video tapes KROQ Free Concert

For today’s On This Date in History, I decided to pull this one since this version doesn’t appear to be online. The side angle that is used as the 2nd camera for the last 20min of the set is on youtube, but not this complete show edit. Hm.
I got tickets to see the band play Great American Music Hall later this year, looking forward to that one!
Unfortunately, the sun was at the band’s back so you get some shadowy faces. Sounds pretty good though.
I LIVED in the area at the time and did not go to this. I didn’t know it was happening.

Belly- Tanya Live Acoustic on KCRW, Santa Monica 4/15/93 xfer from VHS Hifi Audio-DAT

I am hitting you with 2 early ones today because I got a busy day. This one is from my collection- I received it in a DAT trade with JEMS back in the mid-90s. Whenever there was an interesting artist on the radio that day (which was like EVERY DAY in L.A.), JEMS would start up their hifi VCR which was hooked to the stereo receiver and record the audio for the day. You could get 6 hours on a T-120 and 8 hours on a T-160. Brilliant idea! I probably should have done that (off KROQ) when I lived in Whittier.
